Brad came home from work and paused in the living room doorway. Angela and Logan sat on the main sofa together, eyes on the movie—faces lit up with the shifting light from the screen. Brad watched them, just for a second. He moved to the side sofa and sat down, alone.
He cleared his throat. “I have a business trip starting tomorrow. I’ll be gone for a few days. Flight’s tonight.”
Angela didn’t turn her head. Logan barely reacted. Both just kept watching the movie—no surprise, no questions, not even curiosity. Silence pressed down on the room. Brad had expected something else—at the very least, that old ordinary concern Angela used to show.
Finally, Angela muted the TV, turning to look at him.
“Logan and I planned a trip too,” she said, voice calm. “Seven days.”
Brad gaped at her. He couldn’t hide the shock—his face just faltered for a second.
“Where?” he asked.
She gave a small smile, that knowing one she’d used a hundred times before.
“It’s a secret.”
The words hung in the air. He looked uneasy, didn’t bother hiding it, and Angela watched him for a moment before turning the sound back on.
That night, Brad packed up and left for the airport. Angela didn’t walk him out. She didn’t ask where he was going or what meetings he had or when he’d be home. All those small, familiar questions—they just never happened, and her silence trailed after him as he left.
On the drive, a doubt crept up.
Had she found out?
He shook that off right away. No way, he told himself. If Angela knew anything about Susan, she’d confront him instantly. The way she acted—quiet, steady, almost cold—made him sure she was still in the dark. For now, at least.
Once Brad left, the house went so quiet you could hear the fridge hum. Angela and Logan settled at the kitchen table with mountain routes open on her phone.
“So, where are we actually going?” she asked.
Logan leaned closer. “The mountains. Private cabin, a little hiking, mostly quiet. No crowds.”
Angela scrolled through his photos: a wooden cabin tucked among trees, endless views, empty trails. She nodded approval.
“I like it. Let’s do it.”
The evening became a checklist. Angela called the caretaker they’d used before—he agreed to come in the morning, take over with Peter every day until she got back. Peter still needed help—feeding, moving, all of it. The caretaker knew all the steps. Angela and Logan left to buy what they needed: clothes for cool nights, supplies, a few extras for the cabin. Simple errands. When they came back, they lingered in the hall for a moment.
“See you in the morning,” she said.
