Chapter 5: Couple’s Night Part One: Lacey’s Lesson
BDSM Sex Story: Chapter 5: Couple’s Night Part One: Lacey’s Lesson - Bianca and Carmen, Valdez-Delgado, a bi-sexual couple, who move to a very affluent neighborhood, get in a rivalry with their next door neighbors. The Karen and Frank Mitchell. A rivalry that escalates into an unlickely bet to be made, a parlay, three unlickely events that if they happen will force Carmen and Bianca to make good. Only they have no idea how depraved the winners of the bet will be if they win. There is no way all three legs of the parlay can happen? Right? Right?

Warning: The two characters and their friends introduced to this part and their story with Bianca arch has heavy racial overtones. If this is upsetting, please skip this chapter. It is not the locus of the story, just a fact of the ultra-privilege and the elitist casual hatred of some of the wealthy in our society. The words The Mitchell’s weren’t content to let this night end with mere dessert and champagne toasts Like the rest, it had been near the end of the week and they wanted a flourish. After the last of the gelato had been scraped from its bowl and the dishwasher loaded, Frank and Karen herded their guests with chilling efficiency, transitioning from a dinner party to a scheduled after-dinner activity. Bianca and Carmen, still shell-shocked and sticky from their marathon under the table, were pushed down the hallway and into the infamous “playroom” a converted den at the far end of the house, hidden behind a soundproofed door and a tasteless, innocuous framed print of sailboats.
The room greeted them like a hungry maw: deep red walls, floors gleaming and cold, the air scented faintly of leather and old wine. The centerpiece was a custom-built contraption, half medical bench and half medieval rack, with padded restraints and chrome fittings that gleamed under the dim bulbs. At its foot waited a padded fuck bench with stirrups and a set of mechanical arms, each ending in a different tool dildo, paddle, feather, an array of things that could only be understood as implements of both pleasure and unambiguous punishment. Bianca’s knees buckled at the sight; Carmen, for her part, went pale, her face drawn into a rictus of resigned terror.
Karen’s voice was sickly sweet as she explained the rules, as if briefing a pair of particularly dense houseguests on the operation of the downstairs shower. For the remainder of the night, Bianca and Carmen were to remain in the playroom, bound and arranged for maximum exposure to the machines and to each other. They were not, under any circumstances, to stop thanking their “Goddess” after every orgasm or edge delivered by the machines. There would be cameras watching, Karen assured them, and any failure to perform the litany of gratitude in the prescribed manner would result in a punishment “so creative you’ll beg for a return to the dinner table.” The glint in Karen’s eyes suggested she was not bluffing.
Frank fixed the cuffs around Bianca’s and Carmen’s ankles and wrists, slotted their knees into the bench’s rests, and made a spectacle of tightening every strap, pulling just a fraction too tight, enough to rub the skin raw and leave angry red marks as evidence. He cupped Carmen’s chin in his hand and kissed her, long and almost sweet, before slapping her ass as he left. “Don’t let her slack off,” he told Bianca, gesturing at his wife with a wink. “You’re the captain now.” And then he was gone, off to his own bed or maybe the den to watch late-night tennis reruns, leaving his handiwork trussed and helpless for Karen’s personal enjoyment.
For the first hour, the machines were set to gentle rotating between slow penetrations, teasing vibrators, and the lazy flick of the feather against sweat-soaked skin. Every time one of them gasped or shuddered, the camera mounted on the wall panned over, its little red light blinking with interest. Bianca tried to keep count of her climaxes, but they soon blurred together into a tide of sensation and humiliation. She could hear Carmen’s voice shaky at first, then growing in confidence intoning the phrase “Thank you, Goddess. Thank you for letting me come,” like a catechism after every shuddering release.
The monotony of forced pleasure was interrupted only by Karen’s periodic visits. Sometimes she entered with a glass of wine or a bowl of ice cream, sometimes just to lean against the wall and watch, arms folded, a faint smile ghosting her lips. Once, she knelt between Carmen’s trembling legs and whispered something that made Carmen sob and Bianca’s heart kick in her chest. Another time, she straddled Bianca’s face and forced her to eat her out while the machines continued their work below, never once loosening Bianca’s bonds or allowing her a moment of real rest.
After a while, the exhaustion set in. Bianca lost sense of time, her mind adrift on a sea of mechanical pistoning and the sound of her own whimpers. She began to dread the moment she felt herself about to tip over the edge, knowing that the instant the orgasm crashed through, she’d have to pant out the phrase “Thank you, Goddess. Thank you for letting me come” over and over, with the camera’s eye like the gaze of a pitiless god. Sometimes she tried to shock herself out of it by thinking of anything else her son’s swim meets, Carmen’s mother’s laugh, the way her father used to peel oranges for her as a child but the machines were relentless, and eventually she fell back into the pattern, a loop of thank yous and broken moans.
At some point, Karen brought in a plate of fresh-cut fruit and fed them slices as they hung limp from the bench, mouths slack and dripping. Her voice was honeyed, almost maternal, as she wiped their chins and murmured encouragement. “That’s it, girls. Strong finish. I’m so proud.” When Bianca glanced up, she saw Karen’s phone propped on the mantle, capturing every second for later review. The knowledge made her skin prickle.
The worst part was the moments between orgasms, when the machines fell silent and the only sound was the harsh panting of their own breath. Bianca found herself craving the next wave, if only because it gave her something to do with her body besides just hang useless and exposed. She caught Carmen’s gaze a few times in the dim reflection of the steel, and what she saw was not anger or even defeat, but a kind of grim solidarity. They were in this together, and neither would let the other break first.
At dawn, the machines were deactivated with a soft click, and Bianca and Carmen were left sprawled across the bench, muscles spasming, sweat drying on their bodies. Karen returned, freshly showered and dressed in a crisp tennis skirt, and loomed over them with the air of a dean calling a pair of delinquents to the principal’s office.
“Let’s see if you remember your manners,” she said. She uncuffed them, one at a time, and made each kneel before her and repeat the phrase this time aloud, to her face before they were allowed to stagger to the adjoining bath and clean themselves up. Bianca’s throat was raw, Carmen’s eyes rimmed red, but neither wanted to risk another round of the machines. When Karen was satisfied, she handed each of them an outfit: black fishnet mesh bodysuits with holes cut out for their breasts and private areas, and a pair of red pumps.
“Shower, hydrate, and put these on,” Karen instructed. “You have thirty minutes. Our guests will be here shortly.”
Bianca blinked. “Guests?”
Karen paused in the doorway, giving them a pitying look. “You remember Lacey and Don Jones, don’t you? She’s my doubles partner. Bianca’s throat got tight. Oh no!, she thought. Her husband’s the one who likes to talk about ‘border security’ and illegals, and anything else that was stupidly racist he could think of at every barbecue. Little did she know, Lacey was ten times worse. She just was better at masking it.
She left the door open behind her, and the sound of her laughter trailed away down the hall.
The words hit Bianca like a punch to the gut. She’d always despised the Jones, with their thinly veiled snipes about “the help” and the way Lacey always pretended to forget how to pronounce Valdez. Even among the lily-white set of the club, the Joneses stood out for their overt racism, their willingness to turn every gathering into a referendum on immigration policy or “classic values.” The idea of having to serve them, to be seen like this humbled, broken, dressed up like a parody of country club womanhood made Bianca’s skin crawl. She shot a glance at Carmen, who looked as if she might pass out right there on the tile.
“We can’t do this,” Carmen whispered, clutching the bodysuit in her lap. “Not with them. Please, Bee...”
But Bianca knew there was no room for protest. The only way out was through. She took Carmen’s hand and squeezed it, hard.
“We’ll get through it,” Bianca said, forcing her voice into something like resolve. “We always do. We have to.”
They showered quickly, scrubbing the evidence of the night from their bodies but unable to wash off the sense of dread. When they emerged, changed and trembling in their revealing outfits and red pumps, Karen was waiting in the foyer with a pitcher of mimosas and a smile as bright and sharp as a razor blade.
“Perfect,” Karen purred. “Now remember: you are to address me as Goddess Karen, and you will thank me for every kindness, no matter how small. If you embarrass me in front of the Joneses, you’ll wish you were still in that room. Understood?”
Bianca nodded, and Carmen echoed her.
She did their makeup, slutty and garish, completing the humiliating transformation.
The doorbell rang.
Karen’s composure was flawless as she ushered in Lacey and Don. Lacey looked the same as ever: tennis-perfect, hair in a buttery sweep, lips pursed in a mock surprise at the sight of Bianca and Carmen in their outfits. Don trailed behind, sunglasses perched on his head even indoors, a smirk already curdling the corners of his mouth.
“Well, well, look who is right where they belong.” Lacey drawled, eyeing Bianca up and down with open condescension. “I cannot wait to show you how much we appreciated you being such an uppity little beaner” She uttered. The ginger looked more intimidating even now. Bianca found herself longing to be called, “Bubbles” now. The nickname that made her blush deep red when Frank gave it to her, Karen pounced the pair have been calling it her since. Lacey calling her beaner stung her in a different way and her debauched self found herself getting hornier from being humiliated. She really hated Lacey right now.
“I cannot wait to turn this hot little tamale into our personal cock sleeve.” Don declared patting Frank on the shoulder as if to say well done. Both Bianca and Carmen blushed deep red in shame and humiliation. There was a reason they chose Don and Lacey to be the first to visit their new pets. It was day three and Bianca could no longer see the pedestal she fell from if she had a telescope. Lacey settled onto the couch with the unhurried grace of someone who’d been raised to understand that time, and other people’s attention, belonged to her. She crossed one tennis-sculpted leg over the other, pausing just long enough to let the pale, toned limb draw every eye in the room before she smoothed her skirt and gestured sharply for Bianca to crawl over. Her voice, when it came, was honeyed with sarcasm but sharpened with something nastier beneath.
“Come here, sweetheart. Show us how a real working girl curtsies for her betters,” she said, inflecting the last word with a sneer so practiced it was almost beautiful.
Bianca tried to will herself not to move, but her body responded anyway, the learned obedience of the last two days overpowering her pride. She knelt, then folded at the waist, pressing her face close to Lacey’s calf. Lacey didn’t even flinch as Bianca’s breath warmed her bare skin; she just lifted her mimosa, took a slow sip, and let her free hand glide over Bianca’s hair as if she were a small, disobedient pet.
“Oh, I love this,” Lacey said, turning to Karen and Don with a laugh that made Bianca’s ears burn. “You see? They’re so grateful for a little structure. Just like home, isn’t it, Donnie?”
Don grunted his agreement, eyes glued to Bianca’s ass as she shifted uncomfortably on the rug. Bianca could feel his gaze on her, heavy and appraising, and she hated how quickly her humiliation curdled into something molten at the base of her spine.
Karen’s smile was thin and calculated. “She’s a quick learner. Aren’t you, Bubbles? Tell Lacey thank you for correcting you.” She snapped her fingers, and Bianca didn’t even think to disobey.
“Thank you for correcting me, Goddess Lacey,” Bianca said, her voice raw and uncertain.
Lacey beamed, then stretched her leg further, the pointed toe of her heel hovering inches from Bianca’s face. “That’s a good girl. Now, since you’re so thirsty for discipline “ she dipped a finger into her mimosa and flicked a single drop onto the patent leather of her stiletto “ let’s see if you can clean that up for me. Use your tongue, honey. I want it spotless.”
Bianca hesitated, mind screaming for her to stop, but some deeper, traitorous hunger took over. She lapped the bead of liquid from Lacey’s shoe, the bitter tang of citrus and champagne sharp on her tongue. The room erupted into laughter, Don’s the loudest and cruelest, and Bianca felt Carmen’s eyes burning into her from across the room. Instead of sympathy, she saw only horror and a sliver of relief that it wasn’t her.
Lacey pressed down hard with her heel, pinning Bianca’s chin to the carpet. “That’s why your people come here, isn’t it? To serve. To take what you can get and be grateful for scraps. I’m glad you’re finally embracing your role.” She reached down and patted Bianca’s cheek with mock affection. “You’re even better on your knees than you are on the courts. Maybe next time you’ll bring a leaf blower and show us how you really keep the place tidy.” Bianca was turning red she wanted to break Lacey into two.
Bianca’s face burned, the urge to cry locked in a silent, icy ball in her chest. Somewhere in the haze of humiliation, she realized she was aroused; humiliated by the fact of her own arousal, but unable to deny the slickness pooling between her thighs. Lacey knew it, too. She leaned in, her mouth grazing Bianca’s ear, and whispered, “You like this, don’t you? God, you’re pathetic.” She then realized the bodysuit had holes cutout down there too and evil smile crossed her her lips. “Spread your thighs for me slut, should be easy for a spicy lil whore like you.” She did and to her eternal shame she showcased her glistening pussy already swelling with arousal. Fuck what was wrong with her Bianca thought to herself. Lacey eyes got wide as she wanted to really turn the screws now, as if Bianca’s pussy just gave the racist pale Lacey a reason to really let loose.
Lacey’s gaze dropped between Bianca’s spread thighs with the slow, deliberate satisfaction of a woman who had just turned over a winning card and wanted everyone at the table to see it. She didn’t say anything for a full three seconds. She just looked, and the looking was its own kind of violence.
Then she laughed.
It was a bright, social laugh, the kind she deployed at charity auctions and club luncheons, and it landed on Bianca’s bare skin like a lit match.
“Karen,” Lacey said, turning to her hostess with an expression of delighted disbelief, “she’s wet.” She said it the way you’d announce that the neighbor’s dog had gotten into the garden again bemused, vaguely disgusted, privately thrilled. “She’s actually wet right now. From this.”
Karen made a sound of mild interest from across the room, the way you made a sound when someone reported something you’d already known and were pleased to have confirmed.
Bianca’s thighs wanted to close. She kept them open. The instruction had been given and the instruction was still in her body, sitting there alongside everything else she’d accumulated in the last three days.
Lacey uncrossed her legs and leaned forward, elbows on her knees, bringing her face down to Bianca’s level. Her perfume arrived first something crisp and aggressively expensive, the kind designed to signal that the woman wearing it had never once worried about the price of anything. Her eyes were pale blue and very clear and they moved over Bianca’s face with the unhurried inventory of someone examining a purchase she hadn’t decided whether to keep yet.
“Look at you,” Lacey said softly. The softness was worse than the volume. “You know what I think? I think this is the most honest you’ve ever been in your whole life. All that tennis, all that committee work, all those times you showed up to the club like you belonged there. The advertising executive. Your fake tough girl bravado. “ She tilted her head. “And here’s what you actually are.”
Bianca looked at the middle distance of Lacey’s collarbone. She picked a point and held it.
“Look at my face when I’m talking to you,” Lacey said slapping Bianca’s face, not hard but enough to get her attention.
Bianca looked at her face. Trying not to give her the satisfaction of tears.
Lacey smiled. It was a full smile, genuine in the way that only cruelty could be genuine, the smile of someone doing exactly what they were made for. “There it is. God, you have beautiful eyes. It’s almost a waste.” She reached out and tucked a strand of Bianca’s dark hair behind her ear, the gesture so mundane and so intimate that Bianca felt her stomach lurch. “You could’ve been decorative, you know? If you hadn’t been so busy trying to be impressive.”
Don said something from the other side of the room that made Frank laugh. Bianca didn’t track the words. She kept her eyes on Lacey’s face because Lacey had told her to, and she was not going to give Lacey the satisfaction of looking away first.
Lacey held her gaze for another beat, then sat back, satisfied, and lifted her mimosa glass from the side table. She took a long, slow sip, watching Bianca over the rim the way you watched something you’d cornered and were in no hurry to finish. Then she tilted the glass, deliberately, and let a single drop of mimosa fall from the lip onto the toe of her stiletto. The orange and champagne bead sat there on the patent leather, trembling.
Lacey said nothing. She just looked at it, then looked at Bianca.
The instruction was so clear it didn’t need words.
Bianca lowered her head. She felt the carpet under her palms, the specific texture of it, expensive and dense, and she pressed her tongue flat against the toe of Lacey’s shoe and tasted citrus and leather and the ghost of shoe polish underneath. The room was completely silent except for the small, wet sound she made, and the silence was worse than the laughter had been.
Lacey let out a slow breath above her. Not quite a sigh. The sound of someone settling deeper into their own satisfaction.
“You know what the funniest part is?” Lacey said, addressing the room rather than Bianca specifically, the way you addressed a room when the subject of the conversation was an object. “She’s been coming to this club for three years acting like she built the place. Walking around with that serve like it was a personality.” She paused. “And the whole time, she was just a mewling little border bunny, getting wet from licking the feet of her white Goddess.”
Karen made a small sound of agreement from the other end of the couch. Bianca heard ice shift in someone’s glass. Lacey tilted her foot and another drop slid toward the heel. “Get that one too.”
Bianca turned beet red. Bianca got that one too.
The leather was warm from Lacey’s body heat. That was the detail her mind snagged on, the thing that refused to stay in the background where she’d been filing everything else. The shoe was warm and it tasted of her skin underneath the polish and the champagne, and Bianca’s tongue moved across it and her body responded the way it had been responding to everything for three days now, with a low, traitorous pull that she had run out of explanations for.
She hated it. She hated the wanting of it. She hated that Lacey already knew.
“Look up,” Lacey said, in a tone that gave away her intense arousal at having Bianca at her beck and call.
Bianca looked up.
Lacey was watching her with those pale blue eyes, and what was in them now was not the social performance of the laugh or the calculated theater of the shoe. It was something more private. The expression of someone who had expected to enjoy this and had discovered they enjoyed it more than anticipated and were still in the process of deciding what to do with that information.
“How many people work at your firm?” Lacey asked, her voice dropping into something almost conversational.
“Sixteen,” Bianca said, the number coming out automatically.
“And how many are white?”
Bianca felt the question land like a physical blow. “Twelve.”
Lacey’s smile was slow, predatory. “Twelve white people. And you’re their boss? You think a spicy little border bunny like you should be telling white people what to do?”
Bianca’s mouth went dry. She knew the answer Lacey wanted, knew the answer that would keep things moving, but her pride flared one last time. “Yes.”
Lacey’s hand moved so fast Bianca didn’t see it coming, a sharp, open-palmed slap across her cheek that snapped her head to the side. The sting was immediate and humiliating.
“Wrong answer,” Lacey purred, leaning in close enough that Bianca could smell the champagne on her breath. “Let’s try again. Should you be ordering white people around?”
Bianca’s cheek burned. She could feel everyone watching. “Yes” she replied defiantly. Fuck this racist Stepford wife Bianca thought to herself.
Lacey furious with answer of “Yes” squeezed Bianca’s jaw locked until it ached. She was aware, in the liminal pause after Lacey’s order, that part of her was already moving to obey out of reflex, lips parting to say thank you even as the rest of her rebelled. The old war between pride and the compulsion to submit made her tremble, and the trembling only seemed to quicken the blood in Lacey’s face. For a wild, petty second, Bianca thought she could ride this out. If she just shut her mouth, if she just waited long enough, maybe Lacey would get bored, maybe Karen would intervene, maybe the whole rotten tableau would dissolve into the casual, brittle socializing that had always been these people’s default.
But Lacey did not get bored. She lived for this. She drank in resistance the way Don drank in the sight of Bianca’s ass, and it made her all the more determined. She snapped her fingers in the air with a sharp whip-crack, and Bianca felt her body respond the same way it had the last three days instantly, mortifyingly, with a jolt of heat. She was frightened because she most likely would be punished by Karen as well.
“Bend over the arm of the couch,” Lacey said. “Now.”
It wasn’t even a shout, just a command, quick and clean, designed for total compliance. Bianca’s mind was a snarl of fury and abjection, but her body moved as if someone else were at the controls. She crawled to the couch, feeling the rug burns the skin on her knees, and positioned herself, so her chest pressed to the crushed velvet of the armrest and her ass was high and exposed, the little black bodysuit riding up obscenely around her hips. She could feel the air, cold and dry, on her swollen cunt, and the fresh humiliation of being this wet in front of these people nearly short-circuited her.
Lacey wasted no time. She stood, reached around Bianca’s waist, and yanked the suit up so that it bit into the softest part of Bianca’s ass, exposing her completely. Don whistled low and approving. Bianca heard him, heard the creak of his weight shifting on the bar stool, but she kept her eyes fixed on the floor, jaw set so tight she tasted blood.
“Oh, she’s ready for you,” Lacey said, glancing back at her audience with a smirk. “You want to do the honors, Karen?”
Karen, who had been quietly sipping her cocktail and watching with that familiar, chilly smile, set her glass down with a chime. “Always happy to help,” she said, rising gracefully from the couch and smoothing her skirt. She inspected Bianca’s body like a jeweler eyeing a stone, then delivered a single, hard slap to Bianca’s ass. Bianca gasped despite herself; the pain was sharp and hot, and the sound echoed in the space with a crisp finality.
“Not bad, but I think she deserves something a bit more ... memorable,” Lacey said, and with a little theatrical flourish, she turned to Karen and asked, “Do you still keep the violet wand in the sideboard?”
Karen’s eyebrows lifted, her interest unmistakable. “Of course. And the crop.”
“Perfect,” Lacey purred, voice dripping with triumph. “Fetch them, will you?”
Karen strode from the room. In the sudden hush, only Don’s heavy breathing and Bianca’s shallow, ragged gasps filled the air. Bianca fought the urge to bite her tongue off, to leap up, to strike Lacey and storm away. But she was trapped, wrists pinned to the velvet straps, thighs trembling, a hot pulse of shame and arousal pooling between her legs.
Lacey leaned in, so close that Bianca could smell her perfumed breath. “You know why we’re here, don’t you?” she whispered. “You’ve built your tech start-up from nothing, bossing white businessmen around like they’re interns. Tonight, we’ll cure you of that arrogance. You’ll say it,’I should not be allowed to boss white people around’, and you’ll mean it.”
Bianca’s throat went dry. She said nothing. Lacey smirked.
Karen returned, holding the violet wand in one hand, the riding crop in the other like surgical instruments. The wand’s glass tip glowed faintly; the crop lay coiled with authority.
“Which first?” Karen asked brightly, as if calling a coin toss.
“Let’s begin with this,” Lacey said, reaching for the crop. She swung it down across Bianca’s behind, the crack so sharp Bianca’s whole body jolted. She stifled a scream, but Lacey didn’t relent, delivering blow after blow, alternating sides, unpredictable in force. After each strike, Bianca pressed her lips together, refusing Lacey’s command to speak.
“You will say it now,” Lacey ordered, raising the crop again. “Say, ‘I should not be allowed to boss white people around.’”
Bianca’s voice was a harsh whisper, barely audible: “I,”
Lacey brought the crop down harder. “Again, louder.”
Tears sprung to Bianca’s eyes as she forced out, “I should not be allowed to boss white people around.” Her voice cracked, half-angry, half-defeated.
“Good,” Lacey purred. “But not good enough.” She rained six more strikes in quick succession. Bianca cried out with each; each time, Lacey paused and demanded the line, until Bianca’s declaration trembled with pain and humiliation.
By the tenth blow, Bianca’s skin had bloomed bright red. Lacey tossed the crop aside and snapped her fingers at Karen, who flipped on the violet wand. It buzzed to life. Lacey pressed the glass tip to Bianca’s inner thigh. The jolt wasn’t excruciating, just shockingly electric. Bianca jolted, gasped. Lacey smiled and traced lazy spirals up to the curve of her hip, then slid the tip to the wet center between her legs. Bianca arched, breath catching in her throat.
“No relief,” Lacey murmured. She edged the wand in slow circles, never letting Bianca settle, keeping her on the razor’s edge between pain and pleasure. “Tell us again why you’re here.”
Bianca’s body shook, tears slipping down her cheeks. She couldn’t form real words, only choked sounds.
From across the room, Don stirred, stepped closer, kneeling beside the couch. “Are you okay, sweetheart?” he murmured, his concern as hollow as the buzz of the wand.
“She’s fine,” Lacey snapped, pressing the electrode deeper. “Say it,’I should not be allowed to boss white people around.’ And use my title.”
Bianca’s jaw clenched. She swallowed, voice raw: “I should not be allowed to boss white people around, Goddess Lacey.”
Lacey’s grin was cold as a blade. She withdrew the wand, set it aside, then gripped Bianca’s chin. “Louder,” she insisted, hauling Bianca’s head back so everyone could hear. “And mean it.”
Bianca’s spirit lay in tatters, but she forced the words out, voice shaking: “I should not be allowed to boss white people around.”
Lacey released her and turned to Karen and Don. “See? Even the toughest one’s break.” She paused, then pinned her stare back on Bianca. “But just to make sure you’ve learned your place, say it one more time. Bubbles”
Bianca’s eyes closed in defeat. Then, the words came in a whisper so soft it was agony: “I should not be allowed to boss white people around.” Bianca hated how much she has been dominated by these people, this bigot in particular.
The word Bubbles hit her like a second slap, and she felt the heat of it climb from her collarbone to her hairline. Lacey was breathing differently now, Bianca could hear it from where she was bent over the arm of the couch, the sharp little inhalations through the nose, the way Lacey’s weight shifted on the rug behind her. She’d heard that breathing before, in the playroom, from Frank, from Karen, the sound of someone whose cruelty had turned the corner into something more personal, more urgent.
