Morning
The next morning, neither of us mentions the agreement right away.
We sit across from each other in the kitchen. I stir my coffee longer than necessary. Manos looks from me to his phone and back again with the exaggerated indifference of someone waiting for something and refusing to admit it.
“Well?” he says at last. “Are we going to pretend last night’s agreement never happened until we finish our coffee?”
“I was thinking of making you wait until at least noon.”
“I don’t have that much self-control. I want to know if you still meant it this morning.”
“I meant it. I’m just enjoying watching you get impatient.”
“Great. That’s both an answer and torture.”
“And why are you making this sound like a business negotiation?”
He glances at his coffee, then at me.
“Because if I show you how much I’m looking forward to it, you’ll use it against me.”
“Now you’re starting to know me.”
I lift my cup.
“Is that all?”
“I’m trying to figure out whether you’ve already thought of something.”
“Didn’t we say we weren’t going to interrogate each other?”
“I don’t remember that rule.”
“We just added it.”
He smiles.
“So you have thought of something.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t deny it either.”
I take a sip and look at him over the cup.
“Have you thought about what you’ll ask for when it’s your turn?”
“More than one thing. I haven’t decided which one can survive being said out loud first.”
“So you’re hiding too.”
“We said we weren’t going to interrogate each other. Your new rule applies to you too.”
I laugh. There isn’t fear between us. There’s that strange embarrassment that appears when you’ve known someone for twenty years and suddenly have to show them something you’ve kept hidden all that time.
His phone rings before we can continue. Something urgent has come up at the office, and they’ve assured him it will only take a little while.
“I’ll run in and come right back.”
“You’re on vacation.”
“They know. That’s why they’re trying to make me feel guilty.”
“Is it working?”
“Impressively well.”
I get up and take my cup.
“I’m going shopping too.”
His eyes lift immediately.
“What are you shopping for?”
“Things.”
“That was suspiciously vague.”
“You’ll get over it.”
“I’ll try.”
Before we leave, Anna sends a photo of her breakfast and a short message:
“We’re alive. Don’t call before twelve.”
I reply with only a heart. Self-restraint is starting to become my daily achievement.
Midday
We get back at almost the same time. Manos has finished dealing with the office. I’m carrying a small paper bag, which I leave in the bedroom before he can see what’s inside.
“Did you find what you wanted, or are you going to have to go out again?”
“I found exactly what I wanted.”
“Will you at least tell me what kind of store you went to?”
“Not yet. That would ruin half the fun.”
“You realize you’re making that bag much more interesting than it may actually be.”
“That’s exactly what I’m hoping.”
We eat something quick in the kitchen. We talk about the office, Anna, and the heat. The conversation is normal. His eyes aren’t.
Every time I get up, they follow me.
I give him nothing.
“Does it have to do with tonight?” he asks at one point.
“What?”
“What you bought.”
“Maybe.”
“Very helpful.”
“You don’t need to know everything in advance.”
He leans back in his chair.
“Do you know what’s going to happen?”
I hesitate only long enough to make him wait.
“I know how it’s going to start.”
His fork goes still for a second. Then he keeps eating as if he hasn’t heard anything unusual.
The rest of the afternoon turns into a game. I open a drawer in the bedroom and hear his footsteps stop in the hallway. I walk past him, and his eyes drop to my hands, probably looking for the bag.
He finds nothing.
A little before we leave for drinks, I appear in a black dress and hand him a small remote control.
He looks at it in his palm.
“What is this?”
I lift my dress slightly and show him the slim tip of the device hidden underneath.
“A wireless vibrator.”
His eyes rise to mine.
“And you’re wearing it now?”
“Yes.”
I take the remote, show him the buttons, and hand it back.
“This turns it on. These raise and lower the intensity.”
“So I’m controlling it?”
“That’s the idea.”
“If I see you freeze?”
“You ask. You don’t decide for me.”
He nods slowly.
“Agreed.”
His fingers close a little more tightly around the device. His smile disappears. His gaze goes quiet and attentive.
That look affects me before he even presses the first button.
“Can I test it?”
“Not yet. The hard part is outside.”
The taxi picks us up a little after nine. The remote is in his pocket, and I haven’t allowed him to use it while we’re still at home.
“Not even one test?”
“Waiting is part of the evening.”
“You say that because you’re not the one waiting.”
“I’m waiting to see what you’ll do.”
His hand slips into his pocket.
“That doesn’t help me at all.”
“That wasn’t my goal.”
The Bar
I’ve chosen an ordinary bar. Crowded enough that no one pays much attention to the people beside them, but not so dark that we can hide easily.
The room is long and narrow, with amber lighting, wooden tables, and a large mirror behind the bar. The music covers quiet conversation, but not a careless sound.
Nothing here feels extreme. That’s exactly what I want. Around us, people will keep drinking, laughing, and looking at their phones while something is happening under my dress that only Manos controls.
We sit at a small table near the wall. Beside us is a couple around our age. The woman is wearing a white shirt. The man checks his phone every so often.
A little farther away sit two women. One has short dark hair. The other, a redhead, is turned toward the aisle and can see almost our entire table.
We order drinks.
“What are the rules?” Manos asks.
“You control it. You don’t turn the intensity up too high.”
“What counts as too high?”
“You’ll know.”
“Very reassuring.”
“If I want you to stop, I’ll tell you.”
His hand rests over his pocket.
“Now?”
I take a sip and nod.
He presses the button.
My glass stops before it reaches my lips. The vibration is low, but the sudden contact tightens my whole body. My body knows immediately that I’m not in control.
I look at Manos. He smiles as if he hasn’t done anything.
“That was low?”
“That was the first button.”
“You’re going to need training.”
I’ve imagined this moment many times. The reality is more intense because nothing around us changes. The bartender fills glasses. A server walks past us. The couple beside us talks quietly.
No one knows.
Yet.
I finally take my sip and try to move normally. My breathing has already deepened. Manos notices.
The couple beside us notices the change in my posture too. The woman in the white shirt looks at me first, then at him. She exchanges a glance with her partner. A little later they get up and leave.
The two women at the other table understand too.
They stay.
The redhead looks at me and subtly raises her glass.
Heat reaches all the way to my neck. What unsettles me isn’t that they figured it out. It’s that I don’t want to hide.
“The women over there know,” I whisper.
“Do you want me to stop?”
I look toward them. The redhead is still waiting for my answer, as if the question was asked of her too.
“No.”
Manos increases the intensity.
