The Ride Back

We take a cab home just before noon, and at first we stay on opposite sides of the back seat.

There’s no regret. There’s exhaustion and the sense that my body still remembers the mirror, the armchair, and the moment I stood up without knowing for a few seconds whether I was listening to Lena or only to what I wanted.

I turn toward her.

“Tell me how you are, not just whether you’re still okay.”

She looks at the road for a moment.

“Tired, a little dizzy from everything we did, but not sorry. You?”

“Same. I’m just trying to understand whether we’re going home as the same people.”

“Then why are you looking at me like you’re waiting for a final diagnosis?”

“Because I don’t only care about what changed inside you. I care whether we opened something between us that we don’t yet know how to hold.”

“Quite a few things changed. But I don’t feel like we’ve moved apart.”

“That’s what I wanted to hear. Not so I could relax, but so I’d know we’re looking at the same thing.”

She rests her hand on the seat. I cover it with mine.

“We don’t see everything the same way. But we’re still on the same side.”

We don’t add anything else. There’s no reason to decide in the back of a cab what every image from last night means.

I hold her hand. The sentence stays with me longer than I’d like.

We’re still on the same side.

A few days ago I wasn’t at all sure I wanted to stay there. Now the thought that we might not be bothers me.

Midday

At home we leave the bag with the two unopened envelopes in the bedroom. Lena opens the windows and puts the hotel clothes in the washing machine. I search the refrigerator and conclude that food has not magically appeared while we were gone.

“Order something?”

“Again?”

“We’re on vacation.”

“That doesn’t mean we forgot how the kitchen works.”

“The kitchen works. We don’t want to.”

We order two sandwiches.

A little later Anna texts:

“Everything okay. What are you doing?”

Lena replies:

“Resting.”

I look at the screen.

“Technically, that’s not a lie.”

“She didn’t ask what we did yesterday.”

“Thank God.”

Anna answers with a photo of her boyfriend asleep on a lounge chair.

“Us too.”

We eat on the couch and talk about ordinary things. We don’t reopen the night at the hotel, but we don’t pretend it didn’t happen either.

At some point I fall asleep on the couch. I sleep deeply, one arm hanging off the cushion and one leg outside the blanket.

When I wake up, Lena has moved a chair near the window. Her laptop is open in front of her. Beside it she has left a notebook and the small digital camera we haven’t used in years.

An adult streaming platform is open on the screen.

“Today’s fantasy or today’s bad idea?”

“Being watched. And I haven’t decided which category it belongs in yet.”

I sit beside her.

The idea turns me on immediately, but I don’t want to admit how much it scares me that our image could stop belonging to us. The bar was different. Those two women saw us and then left. The mirror was ours. A lens can keep a moment and leave it somewhere outside the house.

“How far have you gotten?”

“I made an account.”

“With our real names?”

She looks at me.

“Of course. I added the address too.”

I smile.

“I asked because I was afraid I’d have to.”

“TwentyYearsLater.”

“That’s the name?”

“The username.”

I read it again.

“I like it.”

“I didn’t ask.”

“That’s why I volunteered the opinion.”

We go over the rules together again: no names, full faces, or recognizable parts of the house; nothing gets uploaded without both of us agreeing.

“If one of us changes our mind?”

“We delete it.”

My eyes move to the camera.

“You know it might never truly disappear.”

“I know.”

“And you still want to?”

She doesn’t answer immediately.

“First I want to see whether I can stand in front of the lens.”

We agree to start with a private recording.

Preparation

We move the camera into the bedroom. I open the small tripod and place it opposite the bed, slightly lower than mattress height. The lens captures most of the bed, but not the door or the rest of the furniture.

We draw the curtains and turn on only the lamp in the corner. The warm light hides enough that the room doesn’t feel like a studio, but not enough to let us forget the lens.

We remove photographs and recognizable objects. Anna’s framed picture goes into a drawer. An envelope with our name on it disappears under some clothes. I turn the clock with my company logo toward the wall.

For a moment the irony hits me. We’re removing everything from the room that could reveal who we are, while I’ve been hiding something much bigger than a logo for two years.

We put on the black masks that cover the upper halves of our faces and stand in front of the camera.

Lena pours a little wine into two glasses. The first sips don’t erase the awkwardness. They only take off its edge.

I look at the camera.

“How will we know if it’s recording?”

Lena presses the button.

A small red light comes on.

“Like that.”

“Subtle.”

“It’s not a lighthouse.”

“We’ll see.”

The First Take

The first takes fail.

In one, Lena laughs. In another, I knock over the lamp. In the third, she freezes the moment she sees the preview.

“I can’t.”

I switch the camera off immediately.

“Then we stop.”

“All I can see is what I don’t like.”

I show her a few seconds of the recording.

“You’re looking at your waist. I’m looking at the way your hand reaches for me without you even thinking about it.”

She watches the clip again. Her hand really does move toward me before she turns toward the lens. She doesn’t look flawless. She looks as if she wants me.

That’s harder for her to dismiss.

“One more.”

I don’t ask again whether she’s sure. I stopped when she asked me to. Now the choice is hers.

She presses the button.

The red light comes on.

For a moment we both look toward the lens.

Her body changes immediately. Her shoulders pull back. Her stomach tightens. She searches for an angle that flatters her.

I pull her close and kiss her.

The kiss isn’t careful. My hands slide down to her waist, tighten around her, and slip under the fabric. For a few seconds I remember the lens with every movement too.

“Look at me.”

She does.

My hands move over her without searching for a good angle. They travel from her neck to her breasts and press her nipples until they harden.

She starts touching me too. My penis is already hard under her fingers. My reaction is real, immediate, and the lens can’t make it more flattering than it is.

I lay her down. Our kisses deepen. One of her hands moves out of frame. My body covers part of hers.

We don’t correct anything.

When I enter her, the first sound escapes before she remembers she’s being recorded. She lifts her hips and takes me deeper.

At first we move steadily. Then the pressure builds and the red light recedes to the edge of our vision.

Lena lifts her head and deliberately looks toward the lens.

She holds her gaze there.

She smiles.

She doesn’t hide the fact that she knows she’s being watched. She doesn’t pretend the camera isn’t there. She chooses to give it the image.

Then she turns back to me and pulls me closer.

From that moment on, the lens stops dictating our movements. Her body finds its rhythm. My hands slide, grip, lose the right position for the shot. We don’t care.

The intensity builds quickly. She locks her legs around me and comes with a deep moan, her nails in my back.

My breathing changes. She remembers the red light.

She turns her face toward the lens.
