Tuesday night, twelve days after the party, I sat at the kitchen table in my apartment with a can of Diet Coke that had already gone warm in my hand. Amber was across from me, legs tucked under her on the chair, scrolling through her phone and complaining about something trivial her boyfriend had done. I made the right noises at the right times. Laughed when she expected it. Nodded. Pretended the air between us was the same as it had always been.
It wasn’t.
Every time the conversation lagged I felt the words rise in my throat like something acidic.
“Hey you’ll never guess what happened ... so I cheated on Mike...”
“Yeah, its crazy right ... I let Tyler fuck me while Mike was passed out ... cool huh?!”
“Yeah ... I came harder than I ever have in my life and now I can’t stop thinking about it and hating myself ... wild right?”
I mean what the fuck was I supposed to say. How do you tell someone that you just make the biggest mistake of your life? Sure, I had more banal statements fully formed, ready to go, and every single time I swallowed them back down.
I took another sip of the flat soda instead and stared at the tabletop as if the wood grain might offer an answer.
Amber set her phone down. The silence stretched. When the silence had stretched too long, I finally looked up I found her looking at me the way only someone who has known you since you were both still in training bras can look at you.
“Alright, bitch. Out with it. What is eating you up that you have been trying to tell me the last week and not been able to.”
The can froze halfway to my mouth. My arm lowered. The aluminum made a soft, final sound against the table. For a long moment I just stared at her. Then the dam broke.
It all came out in a rush ... raw, unfiltered, ugly. The fight that started it. The party. Mike getting so drunk he passed out on the couch. The kitchen and the men who had started circling. Tyler pulling me out of it, sitting with me on the patio, the conversation that somehow stopped feeling ordinary. The way I had started looking at him. The kiss. Everything that followed. I did not linger on the details of the sex itself; the words were enough to make my throat close. By the time I reached the part where I had come home in borrowed clothes that still smelled like someone else’s life, the tears were already streaming down my face, hot and uncontrollable.
Amber’s face crumpled in mirror image. Her mascara ran in dark tracks as she cried with me, one hand pressed over her mouth. I kept going because once the gate was open there was no closing it. I told her about the guilt that never left, the shame that sat on my chest every morning and every night, the anger that had nowhere to go except back into myself. I told her about the tears that came without warning, the way I had thrown myself into work and into being the perfect girlfriend, the risky sex and the careful affection and the desperate hope that if I just tried hard enough the scales might somehow balance. Nothing was working. I still woke up every day feeling like I had destroyed the one good thing in my life and then kept living inside the ruins.
When the words finally ran out I was bent over the table, forehead pressed to my crossed arms, sobbing so hard my whole body shook. Amber was already beside me, arms locked tight around my shoulders, her own tears wetting the side of my neck. She held me like that for a long time while the kitchen clock ticked and neither of us tried to fill the silence with anything useless.
Eventually she asked the only question that mattered.
“What are you going to do?”
I didn’t have an answer. We talked in circles ... confession versus silence, the damage either choice would do, whether I could even look Mike in the eye long enough to tell him the truth. Every option felt like a different kind of ending. By the time the hour grew late I was hollowed out. I wiped my face with the heels of my hands, mumbled something about needing sleep, and dragged myself to bed.
The guilt came back the moment the lights were out, the same familiar weight settling over my ribs. The tears started again, quieter this time but no less endless. I heard my door open. Amber slipped into the bed behind me without a word, pulled me against her, and cradled my head against her chest. She stroked my hair and made soft, wordless sounds while I cried myself empty. Somewhere in the middle of it I finally slept.
Wednesday was another day that should have been mine off. I had picked up the shift anyway, the same way I had been filling every empty hour since the party. Somewhere between the first coffee and the mid-afternoon rush the decision crystallized with sudden, cold clarity.
I could not go on like this. I needed closure. I needed this to end. I needed to talk to Tyler.
I needed to look him in the face and ask the questions that had been circling like vultures. I needed whatever closure was still possible if I was ever going to move forward instead of just surviving. The thought terrified me. The answers might be worse than the not-knowing. But the not-knowing was killing me by inches.
I unblocked the number I had erased the morning after. My thumb hovered over the call button for a full minute before I pressed it. It rang through to voicemail. My voice came out flatter than I expected.
“Hi. We need to talk. Tonight, tomorrow, Friday, I don’t care. I need to see you and we need to talk.”
I hung up and spent the next thirty minutes in a low-grade panic. What if he had blocked me also? What if he refused to meet and talk? I didn’t even know the name of the tech company he worked for with any certainty. The idea of having no way to reach him made my stomach twist.
Then the text arrived.
“Hi Beth, glad you called, I have tried to reach you a number of times but goes straight to voicemail. I am out of town on business but will be back Friday afternoon. I had a date lined up, but I will change it. Why don’t you come by my place after you get off work and we can have a cup of coffee or something. 8pm?”
A second text followed with the address I already knew.
Sure, asshole,” I thought, bitter and sharp. “Glad I’m important enough to get a rain-check on whatever bimbo you were planning to fuck.” I didn’t type any of that. I typed one word and hit send.
“Fine.”
The rest of Wednesday and all of Thursday passed in a strange, suspended calm. For the first time since the party I fell asleep without crying. Having a plan ... any plan ... felt like the first solid ground I had stood on in almost two weeks. Maybe Tyler would say something that would let me believe it hadn’t been entirely my fault. Maybe there was a piece I was missing, an explanation that could offer even a fraction of salvation. I clung to that thin hope the way a drowning person clings to driftwood.
Friday arrived. By the time I was finishing the last of my work the nerves had started chewing through the calm. How would I react when I saw him? How would he react? What if he was angry? What if he pinned everything on me? I had been playing with my hair on that patio. I look at people that way when I’m nervous, not only when I’m interested ... but I also had been interested, hadn’t I, at least for those dangerous few hours. The attraction had been real. The connection had been real. The booze had been real too. But maybe it wasn’t all on me? Maybe. The word felt so very fragile inside my head.
I told Mike I was going out with coworkers after my shift and that I would see him the next afternoon when we already had plans. The lie sat in my mouth like something spoiled, but I swallowed it the same way I had swallowed every other necessary falsehood the past two weeks.
I parked outside Tyler’s place fifteen minutes early and sat in the car with the engine off. I was still in my work clothes ... nothing special, no makeup beyond what had survived the day, hair pulled back the way it always was when I wasn’t trying. Two full weeks of guilt and sleeplessness lived in my face. I stared at the front door and tried to remember how to breathe and act normally.
Finally I got out, walked up the short path, and rang the bell. Nothing. I could see his car in the driveway. I rang again, arms crossed tight, impatience curdling into anger, foot tapping on the paved tiles outside his entryway. “Fucking asshole. You knew I was coming.” I banged loudly three times on his door with my fist and I was already reaching for my phone to text that I was leaving when I heard rapid footsteps inside and his muffled voice.
“Just a minute.”
The door opened.
Tyler stood there with nothing but a towel wrapped low around his waist, water still dripping from his hair, tracking down his face and over the bare planes of his chest. The anger drained out of me so fast I felt light-headed. I stared at the water beading on his skin, the way it caught the porch light, and a sudden white-hot rush moved from my throat straight down between my legs. Memory flickered ... his body looking something like this, sweat instead of shower water, the same sharp lines ... and the ghost of an orgasm I had no right to remember tightened low in my belly.
“Sorry, Beth. I hope you weren’t waiting long. I just got home and was taking a quick shower after a day in dirty airports and planes.”
I heard myself apologize for being early. He stepped back, invited me in, told me there were beers, soda, wine ... whatever I wanted in the fridge, and that he was just going to dry off and put on some clothes. Then he turned and walked away down the short hall.
I watched him go. The towel sat low on his hips. Water still tracked down the muscles of his back. My hands remembered the feel of that skin under my palms. My legs remembered wrapping around those hips. My fingers remembered the curve of his ass as I pulled him deeper into me. Heat flooded me as my face took on a pink color.
This was not at all what I had expected.
This was not at all what I wanted to be thinking about right now.
I forced myself to walk down the same hallway but not make it seem like I was following him, until I could turn off into the living room and then the kitchen. Even though I had been here a few times before, I had never really looked at his house, at the person who lived here. His house felt too quiet, too ordered, as if it belonged to a man who had never once let his life spin out of control the way mine had. I moved through the living room and into the kitchen, needing the ordinary act of opening a refrigerator just to keep my hands from shaking.
The fridge was fully stocked—fresh vegetables lined up in the crisper, steaks from Costco, imported Greek olives, condiments in neat rows. Nothing looked forgotten or spoiled. Everything had a place. The contrast hit me like a slap. My own refrigerator at home was a chaotic mess of old takeout, half-used bottles of dressing, old humus that should have been tossed a week ago, and Amber’s smoothie ingredients shoved wherever they fit. It was a perfect reflection of the disorder I had been living in since the party: a life that no longer made sense, a mind that could not settle, a body that still carried the marks of a choice I could not undo. I grabbed a Diet Coke, closed the door harder than necessary, and returned to the living room to wait.
