A year had passed since my wedding to Cape. A year of blueberry harvests and bingo nights and quiet evenings by the river. A year of learning what it meant to be married to a man who saw me exactly as I was—naked, unashamed, completely free.
I was fifty-two now, and I’d never been happier.
Larkin was ten years old, and she was changing. I could see it in the way she held herself, in the way she looked at the world, in the way she’d started to ask questions that had no easy answers. She was growing up, becoming her own person, and that person was remarkably like me.
It was a Tuesday night in early spring, and the bingo hall was packed. The fluorescent lights hummed, the carpet glowed, the electronic board flickered through its sequence of numbers. I was at my usual table, naked as always, my dauber in my hand. Cape was beside me, his hand warm on my knee.
And Larkin was across the room, wearing a purple sweater and a pair of jeans, her dark hair pulled back in a ponytail. She was playing bingo with her friends, her eyes on her cards, her concentration absolute.
I watched her from across the room, my heart full. She was growing up so fast. It seemed like just yesterday she’d been a baby in my arms, and now she was a young woman, smart and brave and fiercely independent.
“Nana, can I talk to you?” Larkin appeared at my table, her face flushed with excitement.
“Of course, sweetheart.”
She sat down in the empty chair beside me, her eyes darting around the room. She was nervous about something—I could tell. The way she was fidgeting with the hem of her sweater, the way she kept glancing at the door.
“What’s going on?” I asked. “Is everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine.” She took a deep breath. “I’ve been thinking about what you said. About nudity. About being free.”
“Yes?”
“And I want to try it again. But this time, I want to try it here.” She gestured at the bingo hall. “In public. With everyone watching.”
I felt my heart skip a beat. We’d talked about this. We’d practiced at my house, in private, just the two of us. But this was different. This was public. This was real.
“Larkin, sweetheart, are you sure?”
“I’m sure.” She met my eyes, her gaze steady. “I’ve been thinking about it for months. I want to be like you, Nana. I want to be free.”
I looked at her—really looked at her. She was ten years old, and she was braver than I’d ever been. She was choosing freedom for herself, the way I’d chosen it for myself, all those years ago.
“All right,” I said. “But we do it on your terms. You choose when. You choose how. And you can stop at any time, no questions asked.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Larkin stood up. She looked around the room—at the seniors playing bingo, at the electronic board, at the fluorescent lights humming overhead. She took a deep breath, and then she reached for the hem of her sweater.
The room went quiet. Everyone was watching.
Larkin pulled off her sweater. Then her t-shirt. Then her jeans. Then her socks. She stood there, completely naked, her head held high.
“Take what you want,” she said, kicking her clothes toward the center of the room. “I don’t need them anymore.”
The room was silent. Everyone was staring. And then, slowly, someone started to clap.
It was Whisky Tichenor. He was standing at his table, his weathered face split into a grin. “That’s my girl!” he shouted. “That’s my girl!”
The applause spread. It started small, a few hands clapping, and then it grew, spreading through the room like a wave. People were cheering, whistling, shouting their support.
Larkin stood there, naked and unashamed, her eyes shining with tears. She was crying, but she was smiling too.
“I did it,” she whispered. “I actually did it.”
I walked over to her and pulled her into a hug. “I’m so proud of you,” I said. “I’m so, so proud of you.”
“It feels like nothing,” she said, her voice trembling. “Like I’m just me. Like there’s nothing between me and the world.”
“That’s exactly what it feels like.”
She hugged me back, her small body pressed against mine. “Thank you, Nana. Thank you for showing me what it means to be free.”
The news spread quickly. By the next morning, everyone in Randolph knew about Larkin’s public nudity. Some people were supportive; others were scandalized. The local paper ran a story, complete with a photograph of Larkin standing in the bingo hall, her body bare, her head held high.
Sibley was furious.
“How could you let her do that?” she screamed, pacing back and forth in my kitchen. “How could you let her strip naked in front of everyone? She’s ten years old, Mom. Ten!”
“She chose to do it, Sibley. I didn’t make her.”
“She’s ten! She doesn’t know what she wants!”
“She knows exactly what she wants.” I sat at the kitchen table, my hands wrapped around a cup of tea. “She’s been asking me about nudity for months. She’s been practicing at my house, just the two of us. She’s been preparing for this.”
“Practicing?” Sibley stopped pacing. “You’ve been letting her walk around naked?”
“Yes. In private. In my house. Where no one could see her.” I met her eyes. “She needed to know what it felt like. She needed to be sure.”
“And she’s sure?”
“She’s sure.”
Sibley collapsed into the chair across from me. “I can’t believe this. I can’t believe she’s doing this to me.”
“She’s not doing anything to you. She’s doing something for herself.” I reached across the table and took her hands. “Sibley, I know you’re scared. I know you’re worried about what people will think. But Larkin is doing exactly what I did. She’s choosing freedom. She’s choosing to be herself.”
“This is different. You were forty-three. She’s ten.”
“I know. That’s what makes her braver than I ever was.” I squeezed her hands. “She’s not going to hurt herself. She’s not going to hurt anyone. She’s just going to be herself.”
Sibley was quiet for a long moment. Then she said: “What if she changes her mind? What if she wants to wear clothes again?”
“Then she’ll wear clothes. This isn’t a prison sentence, Sibley. It’s a choice. And she can change her mind anytime she wants.”
“But you never changed your mind.”
“No. But that’s me. Larkin is her own person.” I smiled. “She’s going to make her own choices. Just like I made mine. Just like you made yours.”
Sibley looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly.
“All right,” she said. “All right, Mom. I’ll try to accept this. But if she changes her mind—”
“She won’t. But if she does, I’ll be the first one to hand her a sweater.”
The weeks passed. Larkin continued to strip whenever she was with me—at the bingo hall, at my house, at the grocery store. It became a ritual, a routine, a way of life. She’d see me, and she’d strip, and she’d be free.
The community accepted it. They’d accepted me, after all. Why wouldn’t they accept her?
But not everyone was happy. Margaret Holloway and her Family Values Committee were outraged. They wrote letters to the editor, organized protests, and called for a boycott of the bingo hall. They called Larkin a “bad influence” and me a “corrupting force.”
I read their letters in the paper and laughed. I’d been called worse things over the years. But Larkin was shaken. She’d never been confronted like this. She’d never been made to feel ashamed.
“Nana, what if they’re right?” she asked one night, as we were walking home from the bingo hall. “What if I’m doing something wrong?”
“You’re not doing anything wrong. You’re being yourself. That’s never wrong.”
“But they said—”
“They said a lot of things. They said I was corrupting the youth. They said I was a danger to society. They said I was going to hell.” I squeezed her hand. “And here I am, ten years later, still naked, still free, still exactly who I’ve always been.”
Larkin was quiet for a long moment. Then she said: “I want to keep doing this. I want to keep being free.”
“Then do it. No one can stop you.”
“But what if Mom—”
“Your mother will come around. She always does.” I stopped walking and turned to face her. “Larkin, I need you to understand something. This is your choice. Your life. Your freedom. No one else gets to decide what’s right for you.”
“I know.” She nodded slowly. “I know, Nana.”
We walked the rest of the way in silence. The fog was thick, the river rushing past beside us. I was naked, and she was naked, and we were both free.
The months passed. Larkin’s nudity became a regular part of her life. She stripped at bingo, at family gatherings, at school events. She was completely unashamed, completely free.
