Kate Evergreen: Stories

Henrietta Winter stops wearing clothes—not as a protest, but as a preference. In a Florida car dealership, her quiet choice collides with lawsuits, strangers' stares, and her own daughters' grief. Told in ledger-like arithmetic, this haunting novel asks what you keep, what you lose, and whether that sum is enough.

Marilla Whitaker-Crenshaw made a bet with her teenage daughter: she would never wear clothes again. Twenty-five years later, she's still naked—and loving every minute of it. When she falls for a blueberry farmer at the local bingo hall, her unconventional life becomes the talk of the town. But when her granddaughter starts following in her footsteps, Marilla must prove that freedom, family, and love are worth fighting for—one bingo game at a time.

At 48, Lorraine Cortez stops apologizing for her stretch-marked, heavy-breasted, soft-bellied body. After a humiliating public exposure, she steps onto a stage naked and launches a revolution. As she builds Bare Courage Retreat, a sanctuary for women to reclaim their bodies, her brilliant young assistant Sophia becomes far more: professional director by day, devoted submissive “cunt doll” by night.

In Vivianne Jordan's restaurant, the staff works naked. Her sons sleep in cages. When a shadow consortium offers to buy her system and build a city of slaves, the head cook must burn her kingdom down—or watch it become a nightmare.

A grief-stricken nurse, numb for over a year after losing her family in a tragic accident, participates in a controversial hospital program that requires her to work naked, only to discover that physical vulnerability is the key to emotional healing, authentic connection, and ultimately, a second chance at life.

A woman walks naked through a Minnesota winter to find herself. After years of numbness and a performative existence, Karen sheds every layer of clothing, bag, and excuses, guided by a mysterious stranger's questions. This is a stark, poetic journey from ghost to flesh, from cold to feeling. It's about what remains when you stop hiding. She must face the world unclothed to finally feel alive.
