You arrive too early, at the wrong moment. Before the first word of the Story has appeared, before the first chapter.
The Narrator and the Tragedian sit at a table, arguing. The Narrator is not prepared to sink to the level of what he calls “cheap, vulgar novels about sex.” He once wrote with the hand of the man now called Shakespeare! Yes, the world is decaying, people are decaying, he himself is decaying ... but surely not that far!
“Try to understand,” says the Tragedian. “They will give us technical resources. They will give us money too. We will take it, but we will work on something entirely different.”
“What?” asks the Narrator.
The Tragedian smiles.
“What do you think, fool? Creation. Art. Real art. They” — he points off to one side — “will think we are working for them. But do you know whom you and I will serve?”
The Narrator can guess, of course, but decides to ask.
“Whom?”
“Apollo. We will make something real. Something no one here has ever made before. It will be a great adventure, one none of those who travel with us will ever forget. Throw away your Hamlet. That belongs to the past. It is dead. The time has come to speak a new word over these cooling ashes.”
“So much grandeur ... Do you know what amazes me about you?” the Narrator says with a smirk. “You are willing to commit any baseness, and yet ... you remain an idealist. You want to search for a pearl in a heap of garbage, knowing perfectly well that you will get filthy in the process. That is the strangest thing about you ... Fine. Let us try. But I need to remember how to write...”
