Dawn broke over the Pind in a slow wave of pale amber. Cool air drifted through the open balcony doors, rustling the silk curtains. Outside, morning dew clung to the leaves of the ancient jamun trees, glistening under the first rays of sunlight while birds twittered in the orchard branches. The distant chanting of Gurbani echoed faintly from the Gurdwara loudspeakers, carrying across the fields and marble courtyards, signaling the start of a fresh Malwa morning.

He stirred against the sheets, his long limbs stretching across the mattress. A dull throb resonated through his quads and hamstrings the moment he shifted his weight, the physical bill for yesterday’s squat session and evening Akhara wrestling coming due all at once. His muscles felt dense, locked tight with delayed onset soreness.

Sitting up, bare soles met the cool, damp marble floor. He reached for his phone on the timber side table. The screen lit up with a wall of unread notifications from Monaco.

The digital log read in an unbroken sequence:

Missed Video Call (00:14)
Missed Video Call (00:18)
Simran: Are you actually sleeping right now?!
Simran: Main Cannes aali video call laye poora din wait kita te tussi phone side te rakh ke so gaye?! (I waited the whole day for the Cannes video call and you put the phone aside and went to sleep?!)
Simran: Unbelievable.
Simran: Don’t bother calling me in the morning. Main Mom nal shopping te jaa rahi aa. (I am going shopping with Mom.)
Simran: 😡

A lazy smile touched his lips despite the cold tone radiating from the display. Tapping the glass with his thumb, he recorded a quick voice note, his voice still thick with sleep.

“Greetings. Sorry, yesterday’s lower body workout and Akhara force went very well, my mind didn’t even realize when sleep came. Don’t be angry, in the evening I’ll listen to everything you have to say. Enjoy shopping.” (Sat Sri Akaal. Sorry, kal lower body da workout te Akhare da zor boht wdiya hoya si, demaag nu pata hi nahi lagya kado neend aagayi. Gussa na kar, shaam nu saari baat sunda aa teri. Enjoy karo shopping.)

Sending the audio clip, he set the device back on the nightstand without waiting for a reply.

Recognizing the stiffness locked inside his legs, he decided against pushing through iron at the gym. Swimming in the pool offered a better way to loosen his sore legs before Saturday’s Kabaddi match.

Stripping out of his cotton lower wear, he pulled on a pair of navy athletic swim trunks, tying the drawstring secure. He grabbed a clean towel from the rack and draped it over his neck before stepping out into the upper corridor.

Rukhsar stood near the linen press, holding freshly laundered pillowcases. Her orange salwar kameez shifted over her hips as she turned, her eyes lighting up as she took in his bare torso. She set the linen down, stepping straight into his path with an unhurried gait.

“Greetings, Sardaar Ji. Early morning instead of going to the gym you are walking into the water? People say wrestlers don’t fear dirt, but you took a holiday from iron today as well.” (Sat Sri Akaal, Sardaar Ji. Subah-subah gym jaan di jagah paani vich chalne ho? Log kehende ne pehalwaan mitti ton darde nahi, par tussi te lohe ton vi chhuti lai layi aaj.)

A dimple touched his face as he paused two strides away, looking down at her cheeky expression.

“Hey, I didn’t take a holiday from iron, I’m going to give my legs a rest. Besides, why do you leave Haveli work early morning and keep account of my workout?” (Oye, lohe ton chhuti nahi layi, lathan nu aaram den chalya aa. Naale tu subah-subah Haveli da kaam chhad ke mere workout da hisaab kyu rakhdi ain?)

Rukhsar let out a soft laugh, her hand coming to rest on her hip while her gaze lingered on his chest.

“Account has to be kept, Sardaar Ji! If the master of the Haveli himself gets tired, then on whose support will we remain? Should I set tea at the pool for you?” (Hisaab te rakhna painda ae, Sardaar Ji! Agar Haveli da malik hi thak gaya, te assi kide bharose rahaange? Chai dhar devan pool te tuhade laye?)

“Tea time will be later, Rukhsar. First let me swim for twenty minutes. You go and handle kitchen work.” (Chai da time baad ch hovega, Rukhsar. Pehlan vee minutes swim karan de. Tu jaa ke rasoi da kaam sambhal.)

“Yes, whatever your command.” (Ji, Jo tuhada hukam.)

Rukhsar offered a lingering smile before picking up her linen stack and stepping toward the guest wing.

Crossing the rear verandah, his bare feet met sun-warmed stone tiles. The outdoor pool lay still, reflecting the morning sky like glass. The faint, sharp scent of chlorine drifted on the breeze, mixing with the fragrance of blooming jasmine.

Dropping his towel onto a teak lounge chair, he spent ten minutes moving through mobility warm-ups along the poolside. He sank into groin stretches, swung his legs in wide arcs, and rotated his hips to loosen tight tendons around his knees and lower back. Sweat formed a thin sheen over his torso before he reached the edge of the deep end.

He dived headfirst into the water.

The cold impact hit his skin with a sharp shock. Water rushed past his ears as momentum carried him beneath the surface before his arms stroked upward, breaking through the surface with a splash.

He set a steady pace, swimming back and forth across the length. His shoulders rotated smoothly, back muscles flexing while his legs kicked with measured force. Lap after lap, the buoyancy lifted heavy pressure from his sore joints, circulating fresh blood through his quads and hamstrings.

Twenty minutes later, he gripped the stainless steel edge, hoisting his upper body out of the water to sit on the tiled border. Water droplets runneled off his chest and stomach, pooling on the stone. He rested there, drawing steady breaths while the morning air settled around him.

Picking up his towel, he wiped his face and shoulders before walking back inside toward his suite.

Inside his bathroom, the shower delivered hot groundwater, washing away chlorine and residual chill. Drying off, he stepped into athletic shorts and pulled a fitted white cotton t-shirt over his head. Standing before the vanity mirror, fingers unknotted his dark parna, combing through his long hair before gathering it into a high joora and tying the cloth snug across his forehead.

Descending the stairs, the buttery aroma of wheat dough and toasted spices guided his steps toward the ground-floor dining hall. In the background, sizzling butter crackled faintly on a hot iron tawa in the kitchen.

The mahogany table was laid out neatly near the sunlit window bay.

Meher stood near the serving island, adjusting a brass dish of hot potato-stuffed parathas beside a bowl of thick curd topped with homemade white butter. She wore an emerald-green Patiala suit, detailed with a thin gold thread border along the dupatta and cuffs. Her long chocolate hair fell over one shoulder, her heels clicking against the tiles while her jhanjharan chimed with a crisp ring.

Gurmukh sat at his place near the head of the table. Dressed in a formal linen shirt and trousers, his spectacles sat low on his nose as he scanned typed research drafts, entirely detached from the kitchen environment.

He pulled out a carved wooden chair across from his brother, settling into the seat with relaxed confidence.

“Greetings, Brother! Today also study started early morning?” (Sat Sri Akaal, Veer Ji! Ajj vi subah-subah padhai shuru ho gayi?)

Gurmukh looked up over his lenses, nodding once with a quiet expression as he set his fountain pen onto the wood.
