The quiet marble foyer cooled his bare feet as he walked past the carved teak sideboard. Sunlight streamed through the high archways, casting long geometric patterns across the floor.
Steps mounted the grand staircase, his frame moving effortlessly to the upper floor landing. Inside his master suite, he opened the dark timber wardrobe doors, unspooling his navy dastaar and setting the fabric over the dresser.
He pulled a fitted navy blue polo t-shirt over his head, stepping into a pair of dark denim jeans and securing his belt. Pulling on polished dark leather boots, he stood before the mirror, wrapping a crisp black cotton dastaar around his head, tying the layers clean across his brow. He placed his smartphone, wallet, and the metal keys to the black V8 Range Rover into his pockets.
The upper hallway echoed with the distinct chime of silver jhanjharan coming from the opposite master wing.
Meher Kaur glided out of her suite doorway, her tall frame commanding the wide corridor. She wore a peach-pink silk Patiala suit, decorated with gold zari work along the neckline and cuffs. Her long chocolate hair fell down her back in loose waves as her golden heels clicked against the marble tiles.
A flirty smile touched his face, his dimples showing as he leaned against the doorframe.
“Oye hoye, Bhabi Ji! Moga market chori karn challe aa ke poori market nu aag laan challe aa?” (Oye hoye, Bhabi Ji! Are we going to rob Moga market or are we going to set the whole market on fire?)
Meher stopped two strides away, her hand coming to rest on her hip as her posture projected absolute Sardarni authority.
“Geda marn di gal tussi aape kiti si, Deor Ji! Hun taare na gino, chalo thalle. Mainu Moga de main bazaar vich boht kaam ne!” (Taking a trip was a thing you said yourself, Brother-in-law! Now don’t count stars, move downstairs. I have a lot of work in Moga’s main bazaar!)
“Ji Hukam, Sardaarni Ji. Tuhadi gaadi di chaabi haath vich hi ae.” (Yes Commander, Sardaarni Ji. Your vehicle’s key is right in hand.)
He stepped past her, letting her lead the way down the grand staircase.
Rukhsar stood near the archway holding a silver tray with two cold tumblers of water. Her orange salwar kameez shifted as she bowed her head slightly.
“Sardaarni Ji, dopehar di roti rasoi vich tayyar rakhan?” (Sardaarni Ji, keep midday rotis ready in the kitchen?)
Meher paused near the entrance, adjusting her golden dupatta over her chest.
“Nahi, Rukhsar. Assi Moga market de vadiya restaurant ton hi roti khavange. Tussi baaki Haveli da kaam sambhalo te Bapu Ji laye rasoi vich saag dhar dyo.” (No, Rukhsar. We will eat rotis from a good restaurant in Moga market only. You handle the rest of the Haveli work and set saag in the kitchen for Father.)
“Ji, Sardaarni Ji.” (Yes, Sardaarni Ji.)
Rukhsar stepped back into the service hallway with a quiet nod.
The front doors swung open to the midday heat. Unlocking the black V8 Range Rover parked under the shaded portico, he walked around to pull the passenger door open. Meher stepped up onto the footboard, settling into the plush leather seat before he shut the door and took his place behind the steering wheel.
The engine fired to life with a quiet roar as the dual-zone air conditioning blew instant streams of cold air across the cabin. Engaging the gear dial, he guided the SUV smoothly down the gravel driveway, passing through the iron gates onto the estate track.
The vehicle thundered past the green fields, turning onto the regional asphalt highway leading toward Moga.
Meher turned her head toward him, her golden earrings catching the sunlight filtering through the tinted windows.
“Deor Ji, eh dasso ... Harleen naal kal ki gallan ho rahiyan si? Mami Ji dssd rahe si ke tussi saara din ohde naal hi lage rahe.” (Brother-in-law, tell me this ... what talk was going on with Harleen yesterday? Aunt was telling that you remained attached to her the whole day.)
A light chuckle escaped his throat, his eyes scanning the road ahead.
“Harleen te poori chalak ae, Bhabi Ji. Pehlan late aavan te rola paandi rahi, fer apne haathan naal chai-pakore te parathe khwaandi rahi. Naanke jaa ke vi banda aaram na kare?” (Harleen is completely cunning, Bhabi Ji. First she kept making noise about coming late, then she kept feeding tea-fritters and parathas with her own hands. Even after going to the maternal house should a man not rest?)
Meher let out a scoffing huff, crossing her legs.
“Rest! Mainu pata ae oh kudi kinni teez ae. College de pehle term ch hi ohde nakhre pahaad jitne ho gaye ne. Mainu lagda ae ohnu thoda darr dyauna pavega!” (Rest! I know how sharp that girl is. In the first term of college itself her tantrums have become as big as mountains. I feel she will have to be given a little fear!)
“Hai Ni, Bhabi Ji! Kudi ton kyu sarhde ho? Oh te chotte veer di sewa kar rahi si.” (Hai Ni, Bhabi Ji! Why do you burn from the girl? She was just serving her younger brother.)
Meher’s chin snapped upward, her eyes flashing as she turned her torso toward him, her hand tapping the center leather console.
“Main te kyu sarhaangi? Main Haveli di Sardaarni aa! Mainu sarhn di ki lod ae? Tussi bas jyada laad na laya karo ohnu!” (Why would I burn? I am the Sardarni of the Haveli! What need do I have to burn? You just don’t shower too much affection on her!)
A rich laugh rumbled through his chest as he took a smooth turn off the highway onto Moga’s main commercial artery.
“Jo tuhada hukam, Sardaarni Ji. Tuhade aage te poora Pind darda ae, main ki cheez aa.” (Whatever your command, Sardaarni Ji. Before you the whole Village fears, what thing am I.)
Meher looked back out the window, a faint smirk touching her lips.
Commercial showrooms, traditional cloth merchants, and busy jewelry shops lined the wide street, crowded with shoppers, rickshaws, and cars. Near the main commercial plaza, a heavy traffic jam choked the intersection as an overloaded sugarcane tractor stalled in the middle lane.
He sat patiently, idling the engine while the local traffic constable shouted and waved his arms to clear the bottleneck. Meher tapped her manicured nails impatiently against her purse until the lane cleared.
He maneuvered the Range Rover into the paved parking area of the plaza, bringing the vehicle to a halt near the glass entrance of the premier silk showroom.
Stepping out into the heat, he opened her door. Meher stepped down with natural dignity, her height and glittering zari suit drawing immediate, respectful glances from nearby shoppers.
Automated glass doors slid open, welcoming them into the air-conditioned interior of the two-story luxury boutique.
A floor manager in a formal suit hurried forward, though he paused briefly to instruct a junior staff member who was currently misplacing a pile of unrolled fabrics on a side counter.
“Sat Sri Akaal, Sardaarni Ji! Sat Sri Akaal, Sardaar Ji! Aao, andar aao. Special boutique lounge vich baitho!” (Greetings, Sardaarni Ji! Greetings, Sardaar Ji! Come, come inside. Sit in the special boutique lounge!)
Meher nodded, her heels clicking against the floor as she led the way to the elevated VIP seating section lined with velvet sofas.
He settled into an armchair, leaning back while sales attendants placed silver tumblers of cold almond milk and iced water on the low glass table.
