The heavy teak door of the master suite clicked shut behind him, the starched folds of his navy dastaar settling neatly over his brow.
Light footsteps echoed along the upper marble corridor. Meher walked out from the linen store near the main stairwell, her butter-yellow Patiala suit rustling softly with every movement. Silver zari threads glinted along the hem of her kameez under the recessed ceiling lights. Her gold jhanjharan gave off a clear, rhythmic Chhan-Chhan against the polished floor.
A wide, dimpled grin broke across his face as he closed the distance. Long arms reached out, catching her around the waist before she could pivot past the banister. Pulling her frame flush against his chest, his lips pressed a firm, lingering kiss against her flushed cheek.
“HAI RABBA!”
Meher gasped out loud, her hand coming up to press against his upper chest, though her heels remained firmly planted on the marble. Her dark eyes flashed with bright heat as her golden earrings swayed beside her neck.
“Tu subah-subah fer shuru ho gaya! Koi dekh lavega te ki kahega!” (You started again first thing in the morning! If someone sees, what will they say!)
“Dikhne do, Bhabi Ji. Sadda te haq ban da ae.” (Let them see, Bhabi Ji. My right is established.)
His arm wrapped around her waist as they turned toward the grand staircase and walked down the wide marble steps together. Her silver-trimmed dupatta brushed against his arm, the soft chime of her ankles keeping pace with his easy strides.
Gurmukh sat at the head of the main dining table below, his spectacles resting low on his nose as he turned a page of the morning newspaper. A silver tumbler of water and a half-empty cup of ginger tea rested beside his plate.
Pulling out a sturdy wooden chair to his brother’s right, he settled onto the seat with a relaxed posture.
“Sat Sri Akaal, Veer Ji!” (Greetings, Brother!)
Gurmukh lowered the newspaper an inch, taking a slow sip from his tea cup before setting it down with a quiet click against the wood.
“Sat Sri Akaal, Ranjit. Aaj te subah-subah hi poora tayyar ho ke aaye ho.” (Greetings, Ranjit. Today you came fully dressed up early in the morning.)
Meher stepped past the service counter, taking a warm basket of parathas from Radha’s hands before placing it in the center of the table. Her silver jhanjharan chimed loudly as she set a bowl of fresh white butter beside his plate.
“Aaho, pucho isnu kithay di tayyari ae. Subah ton hi judo te swim mukaa ke betha ae.” (Yes, ask him where the preparation is for. Sitting here since morning after finishing judo and swim.)
Broad fingers scooped a thick dollop of white butter onto a hot potato paratha, tearing off a large bite and popping it into his mouth.
“Main te aaj naanke challya aa, Veer Ji. Mama Ji te Mami Ji nu milan da plan si, naale Harleen vi chuttiyan te ghar aayi hoi ae.” (I am going to maternal village today, Brother. The plan was to meet Uncle and Aunt, besides Harleen has also come home on holidays.)
Gurmukh adjusted his reading glasses with two fingers, giving a detached nod as he picked his newspaper back up.
“Boht wdiya. Mama Ji nu mera Sat Sri Akaal bol devin, te aande wele keh devin ke khet de naye seed log baare gal karni si.” (Very good. Give Uncle my greetings, and while coming back tell him that I wanted to talk about the new field seed logs.)
“Haan ji, Veer Ji, pakka dass dewaanga.” (Yes, Brother, I will definitely tell him.)
Meher leaned her hands against the edge of the dining table, her chin lifting with a sharp, commanding air as her dark eyes locked onto his face.
“Dhyan nal gaadi chalayi, te shaam de zor ton pehlan time nal wapas aa jaawi. Mami Ji nu bolli mera pyaar dewe.” (Drive the bike carefully, and come back on time before the evening workout. Tell Aunt to give my love.)
“Jo Hukham, Bhabi Ji!” (By your command, Bhabi Ji!)
Finishing the second stuffed paratha along with a tall brass glass of sweet lassi, he wiped his mouth with a linen napkin and stood up to his full height.
Stepping around the timber chair, broad arms wrapped around Gurmukh’s shoulders in a solid hug, shaking the academic slightly in his chair.
“Dhyan rakhna, Veer Ji!” (Take care, Brother!)
Gurmukh chuckled softly, patting his arm.
“Tu vi dhyan nal jaa.” (You go carefully too.)
Pivoting toward the service counter, he closed the distance to where Meher stood gathering empty brass bowls. Before she could step back, his arms swept around her waist from behind, pulling her tight against his chest wall. Leaning his head down, his cheek brushed her soft hair as he whispered into her ear.
“Peeche ton gal lagan da alag hi swaad aunda ae, girlfriend!” (Hugging from behind has a completely different taste, girlfriend!)
“RANJIT!”
Meher swiveled in his grip, her hand coming up to slap his shoulder, but he was already moving.
A loud laugh echoed off the high dining hall ceiling as broad steps carried him through the glass verandah doors.
