The wide marble steps of the grand staircase yielded under his easy, athletic ascent as he cleared the ground floor threshold. Cool air conditioning inside his master suite enveloped his sun-warmed skin, washing away the lingering dust of the sugarcane fields.

Unbuckling his leather juttis, he set them near the wooden bench at the foot of the bed. His track pants and t-shirt were pulled off, replaced by dark navy athletic shorts that hugged dense, corded thighs and a fitted grey cotton t-shirt that stretched over his chest. Re-tying his black cotton parna securely around his joora, calloused hands smoothed the fabric down behind his ears. From the wardrobe drawer, a fresh, folded navy blue kurta-pyjama suit was retrieved alongside a thick cotton towel. He packed both into a heavy canvas kit bag, zipping the compartment shut before grabbing his motorcycle keys from the side table.

Slinging the canvas strap across his shoulder, long steps carried him down the wide marble hallway toward the service wing.

Meher stood near the marble counter, overseeing the evening preparation of fresh buttermilk and spices. She had changed into a rich plum-colored Patiala suit that clung to her commanding form, her gold jhanjharan giving off a soft, rhythmic chime as she turned her head.

A calm, respectful tone carried across the kitchen space as he paused near the doorway.

“Bhabi Ji, I am off to the Akhara to wrestle. I will return on time in the evening.” (Bhabi Ji, main Akhare challya aa zor karn. Shaami time nal wapas aa jaawanga.)

Meher set her brass ladle down on the counter, her dark eyes measuring his dressed-down athletic gear from head to toe. Her chin lifted slightly, her gold jhanjharan giving a sharp chime as she shifted her weight against the island.

“Alright, wrestle carefully and don’t get your body broken. Remember the kitchen supplies on your way back.” (Theek ae, dhyan nal zor kari te sharir na tudwa lavi. Wapas aande wele rasoi da samaan vi chete rakhi.)

“Yes, Bhabi Ji.” (Haan ji, Bhabi Ji.)

With a polite nod, he turned away, heading straight out through the main foyer steps into the warm late afternoon sun.

The black Royal Enfield Bullet 500 waited under the stone porch. Swinging a long leg over the wide leather saddle, he turned the ignition key. His right foot came down hard on the kick-starter, waking the heavy engine with a deep, booming pulse that resonated off the stone archways.

Gear engaged down into first position. The motorcycle rolled down the driveway, sweeping through the open iron gates and leaning smoothly into the turns of the village access lane.

A ten-minute ride brought the bike to the outer perimeter of the village. Nestled under the massive shade of three ancient banyan trees near the canal bank, the traditional village Akhara sat enclosed by low mud walls. The deep red earth of the central wrestling pit was freshly tilled, saturated with mustard oil, buttermilk, and soft river sand.

Coast-sliding the bike to a halt near the wooden fence, he killed the engine. The kickstand clicked into the dirt.

Unclasping his canvas kit bag, his boots pushed through the small wooden gate. The ambient air smelled of damp earth, crushed mustard seeds, and fresh sweat. Several young regional wrestlers and local heavyweights were already working through warm-up sets along the perimeter mats, their bare feet kicking up dry dust.

Near the central pit, an elderly man with a silver beard and a lean, weathered frame stood holding a heavy bamboo cane. A simple white cotton dhoti wrapped around his waist, paired with a matching white parna tied loosely over his head.

“Greetings, Master Ji!” (Sat Sri Akaal, Ustaad Ji!)

Ustaad Ji turned his head, a bright, fierce smile breaking through his thick beard as his eyes locked onto his former pupil’s frame.

“Greetings, tiger! Come, the dirt was waiting for you.” (Sat Sri Akaal, shera! Aaja, mitti tera wait kar rahi si.)

Setting his kit bag down on a wooden bench under the banyan tree, he stripped off his grey t-shirt, revealing his dense, corded torso and shoulders. Walking over to the edge of the pit, he squatted down, grabbing a double handful of the cool, red, oil-soaked earth. He rubbed the rich soil thoroughly over his palms, arms, chest, and neck, coating his skin to ensure a firm grip during grappling.

“First warm the body completely. Do deep squats and dips first.” (Pehlan sharir nu poora garama. Bethaka te dand laa pehlan.)

“Yes, Master Ji!” (Haan ji, Ustaad Ji!)

Feet planted firmly into the dry earth beside the pit, setting a solid base. He dropped into explosive, deep squats, his massive thighs flexing under heavy pressure before driving back up to full height. The rhythm remained unbroken, his breathing steady through his nose as the explosive movement drove heat deep into his legs until his muscles burned with full activation.

Immediately dropping down to his hands, his palms pressed flat into the earth. Lowering his chest until it brushed the dirt, he drove his frame upward in rapid, fluid traditional wrestling dips. Sweat began to form along his brow, mixing with the red soil on his skin as his torso expanded under the intense blood flow.

“Bravo! Now come swing the mudgals!” (Shabaash! Hun mudgal ghumaye aaja!)

Standing near the equipment rack, two massive wooden clubs carved from heavy shisham timber rested against the frame. He grabbed the handles, lifting the wooden weights off the ground with a sharp flick of his wrists.

Bracing his core, he swung the right mudgal over his left shoulder, letting the momentum arc the wooden weight around his back before snapping it upright at chest level. The left mudgal followed in smooth, continuous rotation. Heavy timber arced through the air, testing his shoulder joints and forearm grip strength through fluid repetitions.

Setting the wooden clubs down with a heavy thud, Ustaad Ji tapped his bamboo cane against the edge of the soft sand pit.
