“Left, right, dodge, feint,” Jaime said, bored. “You’re being too direct, Jon. That might work up in the North, but here, you need to put in some creative efforts, or you don’t get anywhere.”

Jon picked up his training sword and swung it again at Jaime, who only had a shield.

He blocked the boy’s attacks. While the muscle was not there to back it up, Jon was hitting hard. Every movement and motion was obvious, but the oomph was there. That was what mattered to Jaime in the moment.

Jon stumbled forward, and Jaime knocked him flat on his back.

The servant, Jory, jumped forward and shouted.

“Hey! Kingslayer! That’s not how you treat the eldest Stark.”

Jaime bowed his head in a show of sarcastic irritation.

“I am sorry, lord captain of the guard in Winterfell. I was only teaching him.”

“You can teach him without bruising him!” Jory shouted, getting in the face of Jaime.

“He will either learn here, or he will learn out there,” Jaime said, pointing to the world beyond the Rock. “He will get bumps and bruises here, but he will die out there. Where do you think he needs to learn?”

“He’s a child!”

“He’s a Stark of Winterfell,” Jaime counted. “They’re built of hardier stuff!”

“That doesn’t mean you can mistreat—”

“Jory!” Jon exclaimed. “It’s all right. He’s just teaching me.”

Jory and Jaime turned to find the seven year old Jon Stark with a little dirt on his face, and a less confident sword arm, but he never presented anything less than a smile on his face.

“You see?” Jaime said. “He can handle himself.”

When Jory did not back down, Jaime sighed.

“The lesson is over for the day,” Jaime said.

Genna was curious as to how the day was going, and she walked past Jaime, who was scouring his arms and wrists with soap.

“So ... How did he do?”

“How did he do? He’s seven, Aunt Genna. He doesn’t know his balls from his brains yet.”

“I hope you’re not using that sort of language around the young man.”

Jaime sighed in exhaustion.

“No, Genna, but how can I teach him if his little man-servant won’t let me do what I am supposed to do?”

“Maybe like Tywin let us in, we will have to let this Northerner understand what we are doing.”

“Father would kill me if I explained to an outsider what we are doing,” Jaime said.

“He doesn’t need to know everything,” she said. “He only needs to know that we aren’t trying to hurt Jon, only bring out the best in him.”

Jaime let out a sigh. She knew she had bested him in this arena, but it would do her no good to brag. Rather, she allowed him to feel his emotions before continuing the conversation.

“Does the boy have any talent?” Genna asked kindly.

“Talent?” Jaime scoffed. “Not a drop...”

He stopped himself. Genna could see that was jealousy or expectation talking. She motioned with her hand for him to get on with it.

“But he works hard. Father’s plan might not be a bad one with this one.”

“That’s a start,” Genna said, slapping Jaime lightly on the cheek. “You know? I think this child is bringing out the best in you and your father.”

“A Stark bring the best out of me?” Jaime asked, scoffing. “Not on your life.”

She watched him saunter away as was his manner, but she could see what very few others saw. Her words had reached him, and they most certainly bothered him. That was the start she needed to reach the boy-knight of Lannister.

Tywin was dealing with a letter he was writing, and he thought on Jon. He had been punctual at every event for the day. He had even done well in his lesson with Tywin.

The Lord of Casterly Rock had thought by bringing up Aegon the Conqueror as Jon’s first lesson might have been too obvious, but no one knew he was a Targaryen. Tywin also doubted very much that Jon would be talking to everyone about his lessons.

Genna might end up being the boy’s confidante. That was for good and ill. Ser Emmon Frey had come to Tywin’s door, complaining that his wife had not been to his bed since returning from the North. However, Tywin dismissed the knight. From Tywin knew from the servants, either Ser Emmon was not capable of reaching to the stiffness necessary to perform his marital duties.

Unfortunately, Tywin could not say so without offending House Frey, and as of late, he needed to keep his Frey connection happy. After all, Walder Frey controlled the price of the toll through his pass. House Lannister had need of very little of the North, but more recently, some of their lumber was proving to be thicker than some of the Southern varieties because they had survived many a harsh winters.

As such, Emmon Frey, the impotent toad, needed to be handled with care. Tywin did not bring the matter to his sister because she was where she needed to be. Jon adored her, for she spoiled him with her time and attention.

That was good. No matter how hard Jaime or Tywin was on the boy, he had an escape in her.

In the years to come, he hoped Jon could stand on his own, but as Tywin thought of his wife and his mother, he knew that some men were made better by having a good woman in their life, and Jon had nobody. Lyanna was dead, and Catelyn Stark was duty-bound to put her children first. No matter what she knew of the boy, she would not be good to him.

Genna would suffice, but Tywin knew some way, somehow ... Her husband and that worthless family of Frey would ruin or damage him. The problem was Tywin could not anticipate how difficult the Freys would be in the future.

They were already trying to raise tolls on this family and that family, making goods effectively be tariffed.

Jon’s destiny would be in the North or near the Iron Throne. Of that, Tywin was certain of. He would not have him squabbling in the mud with a house that had no courage, loyalty, or sensibilities except to their own.

Still, he shook his head as he thought ahead. There would need to be more histories to teach the boy. Tywin would see how much his quality would take him.

Jaime went to the barracks where some of the soldiers were. In front of the building, there was a group of Lannister men putting coins down, and there were some coins from the North there as Jory disarmed and knocked down a Lannister man.

“That’s three for three,” Jory said.

He walked over and took his money.

“Glad to see that gambling is not only a Lannister weakness,” Jaime said.

Jory stood up to his full height at once.

“Relax, Jory,” he said. “I just want to talk.”

“About what?” the Northerner said bluntly.

Jaime motioned to be away from the others, and for the smallest moment, the son of Tywin was concerned that someway this would turn into a fight. Thankfully, despite his pride, Jory found his way to following Jaime.

“You were the captain of the guard with Lord Stark; were you not?”

Jory nodded.
