Tywin returned to the Rock and worked quickly. Events could change in a moment, and while he doubted very much that Lord Eddard Stark would go back on his word, the Lord of Casterly Rock needed to be sure that all the pieces were in place.

As such, he summoned two people to his solar. He made sure to send a raven to King’s Landing when he had returned to Barrowton before he returned to the Rock.

One was a woman of four decades of age. She was plump, large in the chest with some weight in the middle, and wide hips from birthing four Frey sons. She wore a dress of red and gold, and like his daughter, she had a cup of wine in her hand.

The other was a man of nine and ten. He was in a black and brown doublet rather than his gaudy golden armor. This was good, for it meant that he was taking this meeting seriously.

“For what reason have you sent for us, Father?” Jaime Lannister asked in a playful indifference which spoke of annoyance.

“I have come into some information that will solidify the position of our house for generations if we act accordingly. Ned Stark has a bastard that will be a ward of House Lannister.”

Both looked at him, confused.

“Why is this bastard so important?”

“For now, let us say he has the potential to be a proper swordsman as well as statesmen, Jaime.”

“I fail to see why you need me, dear brother,” Genna Lannister said.

“Catelyn Stark has no love for the bastard child. I will need him to be taught swordplay by the best, so Jaime will instruct him. More than this, I want him to feel as though he is an extension of this family, so I will need a surrogate mother or a doting aunt in you, Genna.”

“You have seen how well of a mother I have been,” she said snidely.

“I objected to your marriage to that undeserving Frey, Sister,” Tywin remarked. “I believe this young man will have the chance to have the nobility of Ned Stark and the sword skills of Arthur Dayne.”

Tywin allowed the implication to settle over his son and sister. Arthur Dayne was an idol to Jaime, just as Ser Barristan Selmy was, and Ashara Dayne was his sister and seen as the former lover of a younger Eddard Stark. More than this, no woman in the world did not crave a Stark despite their Northern wildness. Their honor and trustworthiness was straight out of a story for children.

“So you want Genna to be a loving auntie while I am a strict but fun older brother?” Jaime asked.

“Something to that effect. I have it on good authority that Eddard Stark might legitimize this bastard and give him a castle on the western portion of the North. This could mean a lot if cultivated well in the next twenty to fourty years.”

“How’s that, father?”

“He means to have a monopoly on the shipping of ice and furs from that region, which will give the North an influx of wealth, but if the great Tywin Lannister were to help bring this to fruition, then he would be seen as a bridge builder in the North while capitalizing on the economic benefits.”

“Spoken like a true Lannister,” Tywin said.

“Very well, Father. I will make time to train your little pup project, but you know I will be needed in King’s Landing.”

“I do believe you will be capable of finding a way to split your responsibilities,” Tywin said. “In time, he might become a useful piece on the board. Should Joffrey require a steady hand to right him, then I think it would help our house to have a Stark that we can trust.”

Both of them inclined their heads to him before leaving.

This was how one played the game. He told Lord Stark the truth of the stratagem. A little truth in a deception can go a long way.

In the years to come, he might need to bring both Genna and Jaime into the fold further still. Let them see if they took to this Jon Snow or Stark or whatever he would be called. Tywin had the records in his possession. How useful might it be to have a Targaryen for the future.

Plans required contingencies and extra parts to ensure nothing would go poorly. Jaime could slay any protector that Lord Stark brought with the boy.

Genna cared nothing for her husband or their Frey children. Those undeserving brats were too busy trying to be loved by Walder Frey, just as her husband was. This could be her chance to right the wrongs of being a poor mother.

Tywin looked at what he was doing. He did not lack for introspection. He, too, might see this boy as a distant nephew. Both Jaime and Tyrion were disappointments in their own way. Life was presenting him with the opportunity to ensure for stability and longevity in the realm while also allowing him to pass on his life’s wisdom the correct way.

The future, with Jon Snow as his ward, was looking bright.

King Robert Baratheon should have been leaning back in the Iron Throne with all the grace of a man who would have preferred a tavern bench. As matters stood, he was allowed to be in his private quarters after having a fun afternoon with a tavern wench he brought back to the palace.

Jon Arryn could deal with another petitioner droning on about taxes or a need for more sheep. Robert would have stopped listening halfway through the first sentence. Robert’s best field as king was a battlefield. A few years into his ruling, and he was already getting fat, losing all of a lifetime’s hard won muscle.

The doors to the private room opened.

He was about to crack some skulls when the servant spoke,

“A raven from Winterfell, Your Grace.”

Robert’s eyes lit with genuine interest.

“From Ned? Well give it here, you son of whore, and get the fuck out,” he shouted as though he cared for his privacy.

The messenger fled as soon as the tightly rolled scrap of parchment reached the king’s hand. Breaking the cord, Robert read the few hurried lines.

Robert,

Come to Winterfell alone.

There are matters I wish to discuss concerning Lyanna. Bring only yourself. This is a matter between friends, not a king and his servants.

—Ned

Robert read the note twice before a grin split his bearded face. He had missed Ned, and they had parted on such poor terms. More than their friendship, this was a chance to see his longtime friend once more.

If not for Tywin Lannister or Jon Arryn, he would have made Ned his blasted Hand, but the man was too prideful. Discussing Ned’s sister, whom Robert loved more than any woman, might be the chance to repair old wounds between himself and his friend.

“Ned, you miserable bastard. Thank the gods for this!”

He stood so abruptly that he could hear the bed creak from the absence of his weight.

“Barristan!”

Barristan Selmy stepped forward from the hallway quicker than Robert had expected.

“Yes, Your Grace?”

“I’m riding north.”

Barristan blinked.

“When my king?” the knight asked. When he saw the determination on his king’s face, he was quick to add, “ ... Now?”

“Now. Selmy!” Robert said, already dressing himself in riding clothes.

Before the old knight could object, Robert started making his way into the hall.

“Jon! Where the fuck is Jon Arryn”

“He is attending the petitioners, You Grace,” Selmy said.

“Bloody wonderful!” Robert said, looking to the ceiling. “Tell my Hand that the lauded Eddard Stark wants me.”

“What? Is there danger up North? If so, my king, it would behoove you to send a contingent with you.”

Robert thrust the parchment toward him before thinking better of the matter and tucked it back into his belt.

“No! Tell Jon Arryn this is private business between old friends. We might be burying an animosity that should never have been born in the first place.”

Selmy sighed.

“For how long, Your Grace?”

“A few weeks. Make it two to three months. I will ride there and ride back. Have Jon Arryn at as regent or however the offical actings should be ... Have him act in my place!”

The words were not that of a ruler, but that of a man who had been forced into this leadership role.

“You cannot simply disappear.”

“I absolutely can.”

“You are the King.”

“And Kings visit their oldest friends.”

Robert clapped Ser Barristan upon the shoulder hard enough to stagger the older man.

“You two can keep the realm from falling apart until I return.”

“Your Grace,” Barristan called, “at least permit an escort.”

Robert was already heading down a flight of stairs down a flight of stairs with all the intention of swinging into the saddle.

“Damn you! No, Selmy! Ned said alone.”

“He may have meant—”

“I know exactly what he meant. This is a matter between friends—brothers in all but blood!”

Robert wheeled the horse toward the gate.

“Tell the kitchens not to wait up.”

With a booming laugh that echoed across the Red Keep, the King of the Seven Kingdoms spurred his horse into a gallop, eager for the first ride that had truly excited him since winning the Iron Throne.

Tywin Lannister loathed when plans changed.

The moment he received a raven that Robert Baratheon had left the Red Keep, he knew something was amiss.

To others, this might appear to be a coincidence. That was not the way of Tywin Lannister. He believed that gods (and all religion) were superstitious dribble, that a man could plan for any conceivable outcome, and there were no such things as coincidences.

A man did what he did for a reason. That reason could be sentimental or stupid, but it came from a reasoning within his mind, not the soul, nor even from on high.

As he considered that, Robert would only head North if Ned had invoked the name of Lyanna Stark. Now why would Eddard Stark do this?

It was entirely possible he was feeling sentimental, or he felt he might need to go back on his word with Tywin, and secure the King’s blessing to legitimize the child.

A legitimate Targaryen was useful. A legitimate Stark would also prove fruitful. However, a dead child because Robert could not withhold his wrath would do nothing for Tywin Lannister.

With that supposition in hand, he knew where he needed to be.

He ran to his private quarters to change. He shouted for attendants and servants to prepare to leave early. He would need his sister as well. If Lord Eddard Stark, lauded noble and good and honest Eddard Stark, wished to reverse the terms of their agreement, he would do so with the baccking of a host from House Lannister.

“Prepare fifty men to travel North. Pack provisions. They need to leave by tomorrow evening.”

The servants bowed and went to do his business.

His sister approached and was at the doorway.

“What is the matter. my dear lord brother?”

“You need to leave with the host tomorrow. Make sure to bring a scribe. Lord Stark might be trying to undermine me.”

He reached Winterfell in a manner of four weeks. The hard riding was good for him even though it chaffed his inner thighs.

His time of jousting and fighting or even being involved in a good tourney was over and done with. To have been defeated on the Trident would have meant death, but his victory had slain a different sort of ambition within his soul.

No longer could Robert win anymore battles or fight any foe.

Life had stripped him of his privilege and handed him an existence of whoring and drinking. That sort of living meant he would not live longer, but in some ways, the living would be well.

A hard ride on a horse with the fresh, cold country of the North provided him with exactly what he needed.

When he arrived, Ned Stark was waiting for him.

There was no procession or formal party waiting for him. One might expect him to have Catelyn and his rightful, living heir of Robb, who King Baratheon hoped had named after him, but he was not so presumptive to assume such an honor.

After all, Ned was not happy about the killing of Elia nor of what had been done to the Mad King’s children. Oh they had been run out of Dragon’s Stone? And! The way Rhaegar had raped and murdered Lyanna! What did any of that matter?

Despite the fury that ran through his veins, making the king feel hot and needing a drink, he saw only Ned.

The solemn face told Robert that this was a serious affair, but then, he extended a hand, and they embraced better than the two brothers that Robert actually had.

“Ned!” Robert exclaimed.

“Robert!” Ned said back.

Suddenly, they were boys again, and all of the time that had been stolen away by petty disagreements and arguments were dead and gone.

“Now, my friend, what’s the matter you wanted to talk to me about?” Ned wondered.

“Not here,” Ned said back. “I want to show you Lyanna’s legacy.”

Robert raised an eyebrow when he heard that phrasing. They had spoken of Lyanna much over the years. However, Ned had never spoke of her in such a manner, but then, Ned was leading him to the crypt, same as always, so who was Robert to argue?

Within the crypt, Ned felt more like a brother again.

He took Robert to the statue of Lyanna, and Robert could not help but start crying.

The king touched the stone, and he swore how much he loved her.

Ned knew that they would be putting such affection to the test.

After the tears had died, which took longer than Ned had expected, Robert stood to his full height, and he looked at his friend.

“All right, Ned. I rode all the way from King’s Landing to see you. I know this cannot be only about looking at your dead sister.”

“It is not,” Ned said.

The pounding in his chest was so strong that it reverberated through to his head, leaving him unsure. Charging into battle was far easier than this moment, but he understood why, for this too required courage.

Telling a friend a hard true required Ned to be steadfast and sure. The problem was he was not sure of his actions. He wondered if what he was doing was the right course to take. There was no new course that did not require sacrifice, and he had given his word to Tywin.

He was not a man to break his word, but if he was to follow through on an arrangement with Tywin, he would go forward with the integrity that had brought him this far in life.

“I want to discuss Lyanna’s legacy,” Ned said.

“What? Do you want me to build a library in her honor?” Robert asked before bursting into laughter.

“Not quite,” Ned said.

He raised his hand, waving Catelyn forward.

“Oh! Cat! I didn’t know you were there,” Robert proclaimed. “Oh! This must be young Robb that I have heard so much about.”

“No,” Catelyn said. “This is Jon Snow, son of Lyanna and Rhaegar.”

When she said the name of the prince that Robert killed on the Trident, Ned could see the fury that the Baratheons were famed for, but then the name of Lyanna reached his mind and trickled to his heart. Ned could see the conflict brewing in his friend. That was when he knew his best course was to push onward.

“Tywin Lannister tells me that the boy was born from a rightful marriage between the two.”

“Tywin! Rightful marriage! Do you hear yourself Ned! Lyanna was stolen and raped!”

“Robert Baratheon!” Catelyn Stark shouted, pronouncing every syllable of the king’s name as though he were no more than a petulant child.

“First, there is but the three of us in this room, and a babe,” she said, astutely while also lowering her voice. “Second, you know my husband not to be a liar, so when he says Tywin Lannister informed him of some detail of this child’s life. And third!” she said, raising her voice before lowering it. “Lyanna could have been spirited off and raped by Rhaegar. Many a milk maids have been carried off by lords and threatened at the point of a sword before. While Lyanna had many brave qualities, she was still a young woman being threatened by the Crown Prince, so you will do well to think well of her!”

Robert looked aghast at Catelyn before a look of shame washed over his face. He nodded before lowering his head.

“You’re right...” he said slowly. “Tell me everything Ned.”

Lord Eddard Stark was quick to explain about the Tower of Joy. He explained how Lyanna only told him to name the baby Jon. She was dying and did not have time explain about whether the child was a rightful born child or a bastard, so Ned took the child as his own and made many believe he had an affair with some camp follower.

Robert supplied the name ‘Wylla’ after saying something about Bessie and great big tits, which Catelyn said Robert’s name out indignantly, and Robert deflated.

After which, he explained how Tywin Lannister came to his home.

“He told me that there was a record at the Citadel of their marriage being legally binding,” Ned finished. “I do not know more than that, Robert. I swear this on the old gods, Robert, and in the name of our friendship.”

“You also told me that this was your bastard, Ned.”

“Robert,” Catelyn said, indignant once more. “Surely, you can see that Ned was only trying to protect both his sister and you.”

“Me? How was the amazing Ned Stark and all his honor protecting me?”

“If Jon is this Aegon the Sixth of House Targaryen, he would be a rival for you and your throne,” Catelyn said. “More than this, he would be the son of your most hated enemy. You, in your rage, might forget that he is also the son of your greatest love. Many a men have forgotten their honor in fits of drunkenness, lust, and ... rage.”

To this condemnation, Robert had no answer. Faced with the truth, what could he do except deflate and agree with the summation of his character.

“Let me have a look at him,” Robert said.

The two Starks looked from one another before returning their looks at Robert.

“I won’t slay the babe right in front of you two. I would have to kill Ned after, and I would not dream of slaying the son of Lyanna in front of her dead body.”

The point was sound, so Catelyn handed the child over to the king.

He looked at this dark haired boy with gray eyes so dark that they might have been black.

In this infant, he sees a Stark far more than a Targaryen. Neither of the Starks spoke as the king inspected this child, looking for his enemy, rather than the girl he loved. For those fifteen seconds, much of the fate of the world would be decided.

Ned could see that Robert was studying Jon, looking at this child with more inspection than he gave his own life. Muscles were tense in their regal guest. From jaw to bicep, he was tense.

Surely, he saw Targaryen seed, spawn of the dragon, the one who stole the life from Lyanna, but as he looked close, the child cooed, which might have saved Jon. Robert handed the child back to Catelyn, and Robert spoke.

“What would you have me do for Lyanna’s son, Ned? What would you have me do for my nephew?”

The two looked shocked. The rage, grief, and bitterness that had fueled his hatred was nearly dead. Surely, there were still embers to be tended to, but for the moment, these feelings did not overtake him.

“We would have the boy made a Stark, Your Grace,” Catelyn said when she received young Jon again.

“Is that truly what you would want, Ned?”

“We would, but we would like to make clear that Robb is the heir to Winterfell, not Jon. While we do love the boy, we would not want to steal my and Catelyn’s rightful son oof his birthright.”
