Back at the Twins, Genna Lannister stood upon one of the banisters overlooking the Green Fork. She did not particularly enjoy returning to the home of Walder Frey but anything for the family and all that.

Her eyes watched the water move beneath her in a steady, almost motionless rhythm. As she thought, she knew that Emmon off elsewhere in his diminutive status, looking to have found the wine.

As she thought about what she did for her family, she was coming to realize that she was not doing this for House Lannister, but she was doing all of this work for Jon.

How strange it was that a child who meant nothing to her only a year ago was suddenly becoming pivotal to her life. Already, through him, she saw the disappointment of her own children, and in a way, her husband and brother, Kevan.

Kevan did not have a thought that Tywin did not have first. Her husband was a sycophant to his father. Her sons were the definition of weak-willed disappointments that could not decide if they wanted anything for themselves or if all they did was for the approval of the great Walder Frey.

Her husband was even worse. He could not decide what he wanted or when. When Walder snapped at him, he balked; when Genna stood up, he flinched; when Tywin spoke, he complied.

This nature of his was to bend the most influential person in closest proximity. He had no spine.

Then, there was Jon. How could a child ... a literal child ... have more will than her husband and son? As she looked out at the dingy sky, she could see why Tywin had brought him into the fold. Being a legitimized bastard, Jon knew he would inherit little, so he would worked harder than most. She had been there when the idiot boy worked himself into exhausted and collapsed.

He had said he did not want to be sent back to Winterfell in disappointment.

The knowledge that failure could lead to punishment pushed him harder than any whip might. Sadly, for that very quality, Genna cared for this child. He did not deserve to be overworked and for nothing more than the fact that he wanted to succeed.

That he gave a vow to a girl that could not further his position told Genna that Jon was a Stark son more than ever, and as such, he needed to be protected until he could protect himself.

One would be able to recognize that this was more accurate than any loyalty she had given Tywin, and yet it was because of Tywin that she had even come to care for the boy.

Oh the messy lives they led. Genna knew she was far too deeply invested in Jon, but there was nothing to be done about it. She came to the Twins to protect that boy, and so she would.

In some way, she realized some things never changed, and in others, they altered a great deal and irrevocably.

Footsteps approaching from behind her interrupted her tumultuous thoughts.

“Lady Genna. It is good of you and your husband to make your way back to the Twins after such a short visit.”

She turned and found Walder Frey limping to her son, cane in hand.

“Your husband has gone to drink?” Walder asked in a somewhat respectful tone.

For this courtesy, Genna’s guard went up. Walder was not the sort of man to show kindness unless he believed the act would benefit him somehow.

“Yes.”

“He spends more time drinking than doing anything else as of late, Lady Genna. Is there a reason for this?”

“How should I know?” Genna replied by question dryly. “He has his sons by me, so he is content. His drinking keeps him occupied.”

Walder snorted.

“As opposed to certain failures elsewhere in your marriage,” Walder saying, allowing the implication to land.

“I am quite sure I do not know what you mean,” Genna rebuffed quickly.

“I am sure you do. You have been a Frey for some time, Lady Genna,” Walder said with a crude laugh. “You know very well that the men of this house have no problem talking about a pair of supple tits or a firm ass, but your husband sounds like he is too quick to bring his spear to the point of piercing.”

Genna slowly turned her head toward him.

“I beg your pardon?”

“You heard me, Lady Genna.”

“You’re disgusting,” Genna shot back.

“You married into this family and bore us children. You know very well what we are, Lady Genna. Your loyalties might be at Casterly Rock, but you are very much part of House Frey.”

Genna let out an unpleasant laugh.

“Lord Walder, I was born a Lannister, I was raised a Lannister, and I will die a Lannister. Whatever you believe about being part of your house, I am still very much my brother’s sister, and I do not take kindly to your disposition.”

Walder’s eyes narrowed before he let out a loud cackle.

“Well, I do like when you decide to show some teeth, Lady Genna,” Walder Frey said.

He turned away from her to look at the horizon.

“I am sure you know the real reason I asked you and that worthless son of mine to come back to the Twins. Do you not?”

“I am sure I could not have the faintest idea,” Genna rebuffed.

The answer irritated the Frey Lord, so much so that the many wrinkles of his brow more than doubled.

“Your brother seems determined to keep the Stark boy all to himself.”

“Jon?” Genna asked, feigning ignorance. “Is this what this is all about.”

“That boy is the eldest Stark of the Lord of Winterfell,” Walder snapped in vexation. “Tywin is playing a dangerous game if he thinks he can take Ned Stark’s eldest son and make him into a pawn of the west.”

“Ha! You do not care about the North. You just want your family infecting another great house.”

Walder looked back at her with a mix of a smile and a glare that could kill.

Genna’s expression hardened in response, for she would not be intimidated by the geriatric Frey. No matter how much the others respected and kneeled and scraped before him, she was a lioness and would never be put down by some lesser being.

“You severely misunderstand the situation.”

“Do I?”

“Yes,” she said curtly.

“Is that why he interfered, trying to prevent that boy from keeping his oath?”
