The solar of Tywin Lannister had its master behind a table, reading a correspondence that he did not particularly enjoy when his sister, Genna, entered respectfully and sat down opposite him.
“You have received another summons from Walder Frey,” Tywin said.
Genna sighed and rolled her eyes before pouring herself a cup of wine.
“Is that so? What for?”
“It would seem as though the Great and Late Lord Frey wants you and your husband, Emmon, to return to the Twins more frequently.”
“Of course he does,” Genna said irritated by the changeable nature of the Lord of the Twins. “Is there any particular reason? Or am I and my husband being used as pieces in this strange game between the both of you?”
“He is aware that his granddaughter has become attached to our ward, but he saw how much Jon doted on you, so he wants you to spend more time at the Twins, so that he might have a more direct hand at Jon.”
“Does he think I will bring Jon with me?” she asked.
“I believe he hopes your attachment to the boy,” Tywin said slowly, “will be a convenient method by which he might have leverage over Jon.”
Genna’s facial features were a blend of admiration, vexation, and exhaustion.
“Why do I sense you want me to do this when you should be objecting?”
“I would object,” Tywin said, “as I did in your marriage, but this feels more ... unavoidable.”
“How so?”
“Walder Frey wants a hand on Jon, but he does not understand how much effort we have put into the young man.”
“Then what is the purpose of me going?” Genna wondered.
“The girl,” Tywin replied quickly enough.
“Fat Walda?”
Tywin’s eyes narrowed.
“Do not call her that,” he added. “If she is to be useful to our plans, then we must consider her part of the fold.”
“Understood,” Genna remarked blithely.
“You said you had some intention to foster her in order to see if there was any potential,” Tywin said.
“Unofficially, yes,” Genna replied. “I doubt Walder would willingly surrender control of one of his grandchildren. But if I were there while Jon is away, I think I could teach the young lady to be more of a Mistress of Whispers and less a disposable Frey, yes.”
“A better and more cunning version of Cersei, then?” Tywin asked, countenance darkening.
“Yes,” Genna remarked. “Perhaps this is not the highest bar, but Jon is a Stark. He might feel compelled to keep his word.”
“Yes. That thought has been crossing my mind a lot as of late. What good would helping this young lady do?”
“Women like Cersei possess beauty as well as ambition and intelligence, but she the ability to implement it because she lacks patience and feels entitled. A young Frey girl that is called fat might be seen as more of a simpleton and could be molded into something more ... useful to Jon in the future.”
“Which would give this young lord allies in the Riverlands, Westerlands, and the North. He will be a powerful player in the future.”
“Isn’t that the point of all of this, Tywin?”
He nodded.
“Yes ... and no,” he said. “I am hoping he will be a benefit to our family as well as the Starks. Too many alliances before he is a man grown, and he might forget to whom he owes his spurs.”
“I do not think Jon is so fickle with his loyalty, Tywin,” she rebuffed. “I think he likes you more than his family in the North because you challenge him and reward him in proper order.”
Tywin considered her words. There was a lot of risk in that possibility, but warding Jon was always going to be a gamble. Most thought that one came up with a plan and put it into action, but people are changeable, making it difficult to be sure of who stood where. In that capacity, he was grateful to the Starks, for they understood the value of honor.
“That very well might be true, but it might not be enough. This is why I am trusting you with your plan for this girl.”
“With?”
“I do not know if Jon will be good with this young woman or Myrcella, but what I do know is we need contingencies for the probabilities that might occur.”
Genna smiled.
“How generous of you.”
“Do not mistake trust for permission to neglect your other responsibilities in Jon. He sees you as a surrogate mother or a very doting aunt. We cannot afford to lose that, Genna.”
“One day, you really will have to explain why you are doing all of this.”
“That boy is an important piece on the board, Genna,” Tywin answered. “Jon is tied inextricably to the North, and unless that changes, what he could represent is important. We need him for the legacy of this family.”
“I enjoy giving him a home where he does not wonder where he belongs,” Genna said. “But I know there is more to this. I do not know what else is going on Tywin, but you will have to trust someone with your machinations.”
“No,” Tywin said with a shake of his head. “I do not think I will, Genna.”
For days after witnessing Cersei’s act of adultery and betrayal, Jaime Lannister had made himself scarce.
He did as his father wanted and observed his sons. Joffrey was a selfish little thing while Tommen was as likely as any child to be gentle and kind. Myrcella was but a baby, so he could only do so much with how she was.
He ate alone when he could, slept poorly, and avoided the places where he might encounter his sister, let alone her oaf of a husband.
