With everyone fed, clothed, some form of purpose, and having a pathway to someday leaving the Vault, the rest of the place was coming up with rumors for entertainment to Kathryn’s mind.

As she thought of her friends’ theories on the Overseer lingered in her mind, Kathryn found the mutterings about her and Leo far more irritating. She went to the elevator, and then she stopped until she chanced upon a Mister Handy, which she hoped was AIDEN.

When it was not, the automaton was able to bring AIDEN to her.

“What can I do for you, Mrs. Walker?” AIDEN wondered.

“Could you take me to the robot repair level?” she asked.

“Whatever for?” AIDEN asked. “You are not a robot in need of repair.”

Oh great, she thought. Now the damn AI is going to think I am trying to step out on my husband.

She composed herself so as to better answer his question and not make herself look any more guilty than she felt.

“Well, I was looking for Leo. You called him Repairman Leo?”

AIDEN did not move for a moment. Despite how sophisticated he (Could a robot be a he?) made himself sound, she could see he was just a machine with the limitations of a processing unit and a bunch of circuits.

“You should have said so in the first place,” AIDEN said.

She could have sworn that she could hear his excitement. While some Mister Handys allowed for emotionality, she had felt that AIDEN was above all of the problems of disposition and temperament, yet if he was intelligent (artificial or otherwise), then he must have some kind of mindset that accepted the possibility of feelings.

“Repairman Leo is on the administration level, dealing with some cleanup,” AIDEN said. “I can send a message to his Pip-Boy to come to the repair level.”

“That would be lovely. Thank you, AIDEN,” said Kathryn. “Just one more thing ... Could you show me how to get to the administration level?”

She was grateful that he did not have the ability to laugh, or at the very least, he had the dignity not to laugh at her. AIDEN showed her the elevator and explained that the administration level might be near the top, but administration, waste, and disposal were near the bottom of the Vault.

Robot Repair was third from the bottom.

Kathryn stowed that away for later if she ever needed to come back.

This was a small reflective moment as the elevator took her down to the mending level for machines.

Why would she need to come back down to Leo’s repair level? They were not the closest of friends. She did not know him from before the bombs dropped. He had helped her, sure. Denying that would be dishonest, and regardless of the unique circumstances she found herself in, Kathryn had to admit that much of the truth because that was how she had been raised.

Truth mattered. That was why her vows to Keith mattered.

As the elevator wound its way down, she thought of how kind Leo was, how sweet, how accommodating to her he was. Did she like him because he gave her his time and energy, unlike her husband or was she fond of the man underneath.

There would be no way to know for certain because to do so would have put her in a position to be physically and emotionally vulnerable. That sort of defenselessness belonged to her husband, not to Leo. Regardless of what the other wives had said, Kathryn had no intention of breaking her vows for the sweet, handsome janitor she had met.

When the doors opened, she found that Leo was not there.

That only made sense. She looked through the messy room, looking over the carcasses of one robot over another. Some had parts like a tube or set of wires.

Everything about Leo’s workspace reflected an overworked and underappreciated employee, yet still, he never once complained in the short time she knew him. Surely, when he was alone, he cursed or complained about his lot in life. Somehow though, that thought seemed beneath him to her thinking.

Why did she think so well of him? She had not known him long.

When the thoughts were coming and going, Leo entered. He looked much cleaner in his attire at the moment.

She was starting to wonder why. Maybe reading detective novels were not so good for her. She was looking for clues to a mystery when there was not one.

“Oh ... Hey, Kathryn. AIDEN made it seem like it was a matter of life and death. Not that you’re not important, but...”

“I’m not dying,” Kathryn conceded. “What did AIDEN make it seem like?”

“As if someone had a saw in their stomach, and we were gonna need me and a doctor,” Leo said thought a nervous laugh. He calmed himself. “So ... What can I do for you?”

“Well, to cut to the chase ... You know we are just friend, right?”

“Yes?” Leo said, confused. “Did I lead you to believe we would be trying for more? I know you’re married.”

“To some men, that doesn’t mean a lot.”

“My parents might be dead, but they were Catholic. Well, my mom was. If she heard I slept with you while you were happily married, she would come down from on high with a leather belt with my name on it.”

He dramatically rubbed his own behind, and Kathryn noticed that his butt was actually fully figured.

“It’s just that my friends think that we are ... You know ... trying to...”

Leo held a hand up to stop her.

“You don’t have to continue. You look like you’re gonna have a heart attack, and then I have to explain to everyone what happened down here. Trust me, random brown man with a white woman will not end well for me.”

“I am sure no one will think that.”

“Tell that to Emmett Till,” Leo countered.

“Who?” Kathryn asked.

Leo said nothing and shook his head.

“I promise I am not trying to seduce you. Is everything okay?”

“I guess so,” Kathryn said, trailing off. “Why did you work so hard for my books?”

Leo laughed.

“You seemed sad. I don’t have many friends down here. Most people want to go back to their old lives. I am a piece of the world that others want to forget about, so I guess my only real friend is AIDEN, so this was nice.”

Kathryn froze, feeling terrible.

“I am so sorry.”

“Don’t be,” Leo said. “I will make sure to keep my distance in the future.”

“I’m ... I’m so sorry.”

“I really do think it is best that you leave, Kathryn. Please.”

She did not know what to do.

Never had she ever intended to objectify him; nonetheless, she found that she had. By listening to her friends, she had faltered in the loyalty and friendship that she had given to Leo.

He had not tried to make her appreciate him. She could see that he had his own pains and feelings on the subject. He had simply allowed her to come into his life, offer her a shoulder to cry on, and in the end, had let her make a fool of herself.

In her heart of hearts, she wondered if that might not have been for the better. After all, she was coming to appreciate the time they were spending together, so much so that she was neglecting her own marriage for this stranger.

It was better that she offended him and allowed herself to focus on the man she had sworn to be faithful and love for the entirety of his life.

The thoughts of what was going on in the Vault with this mysterious Overseer, her husband, the loss of having children, and every potential loss since waking up in the hellhole of a containment chamber that they called a Vault did not feel worth it.

She would not try to salvage her friendship with Leo, she could not fix her and her husband’s genetic incompatibility, and she did not give one fuck about this stupid mystery everyone else was going through.

Instead, she went home, knowing Keith would be there soon.

Once there, she looked through the wardrobe that she had from her life before.

While the Vault provided a jumpsuit that was meant to keep everyone equal while underground, the inventory of the facility had allowed for clothes from the previous life to be delivered. Whomever the makers of this Vault were, they had a sense of empathy for certain, small facets of life.

For this kindness, Kathryn was grateful.

She looked through the trunk of clothes and found what she needed.

The lingerie was black, gold, and red with a little star over the navel. The fabric hugged her body in a way that allowed it to accentuate her breasts, waist, and ass without drawing too much of the attention to her stomach.

For her, this was the ideal outcome because while she was grateful to the body she had and the babies she had made, Kathryn felt the stretch marks, mild cellulite, and extra weight around her stomach region made her unattractive.

All of those thoughts left her when Keith walked through the door.

He appeared gaunt and dehydrated despite his overweight nature.
