Keith ordered men to escort both Leo and Michael out of the room. He whispered into the ear of one of the security enforcers. Then, he closed the door behind him, so that he and Kathryn were alone. Something about the motion made Kathryn feel trapped all over again.
The apartment suddenly felt smaller with the knowledge that her husband was the mysterious Overseer.
The blue-and-gold Overseer badge pinned over his left breast of his Vault jumpsuit made her want to scowl in rage. She had spent weeks looking at that same face across dinner tables and in bed while wondering who controlled Vault 615, but it had been him all along. Her thoughts started to wonder what that meant.
Kathryn stood near the kitchen counter with her arms folded tightly beneath her chest. For the most fleeting of moments, she hoped that the security personnel treated Leo well.
When she looked at her husband though, the thought of the sweet repairman left her.
Keith settled his attention onto Kathryn, noting the anger in her face.
“Katie...”
“Don’t,” Kathryn snapped immediately. “Don’t you ‘Katie’ me! You lied to me!”
The words struck harder than she intended, but she did not regret one iota of their effect.
Keith looked wounded, and he damn well deserved it.
“I didn’t lie.”
“You let me spend weeks wondering who was running this Vault while you slept beside me every night. You could have said something!”
Keith exhaled slowly through his nose.
“It wasn’t that simple.”
“Then explain it to me,” Kathryn demanded. “Because right now, it feels really fucking simple.”
She motioned toward the badge on his chest.
“You have been making hundreds of decisions and running off, leaving me by myself, and you never once thought of trusting me enough to tell me what the fuck was going on!”
“It wasn’t about trust.”
His response was weak, which only aggravated Kathryn all the more.
“Then what was it about? Please. Tell me so I don’t feel fucking crazy!”
Keith hesitated. He looked back to make sure that none of the denizens of Vault 615 had stuck around long enough to hear what was going on between himself and his wife.
When he felt relatively certain that they were alone, Keith finally spoke carefully.
“The position came with restrictions and protocols. AIDEN made it very clear that secrecy was necessary during the stabilization period.”
Kathryn stared at him incredulously.
“So a robot told you to keep secrets from your wife and you just... listened?”
“It wasn’t just from you. Nobody in here knew.”
“I don’t give a fuck about everyone else, Keith!” Kathryn said, further enraged. “I care about you and me! I’m your wife.”
The words came out more wounded than angry, but she did not regret a single syllable.
Keith visibly softened at that.
“Katie...”
“No,” she interrupted again. “You don’t get to say my name and pretend like everything’s okay. This is not okay!”
Her hands trembled slightly.
“Do you have any idea what this place has been like for me? Waking up here? Finding out we can’t have children? Watching everyone act like this is all some kind of social club while my entire life fell apart? But this whole time you’ve...”
Kathryn paused as another realization struck her.
“You!” Kathryn exclaimed, pointing a finger at her husband. “You’ve been out fucking these wives in secret!”
Her mind started to put some things together while Keith was trying to mount a defense.
“Katie ... It’s not that simple...”
“That’s why Michael tried to rape me! You fucked his wife! You made him watch! You! Gawd, Keith! What is wrong with you!”
Keith took a step toward her.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By lying to me? But sneaking out and banging every broad you could? What the fuck is wrong with you!”
“AIDEN made clear about the protocols. If I revealed who I was, you and I would be in danger.”
“Because of what you did, I was in danger!”
“I didn’t want to drag you into the politics of this or be seen as different.”
Kathryn could not handle how uncomfortably calm he was. It was as though they were having two completely different conversations.
The Overseer badge suddenly looked less prestigious on him than Kathryn might have expected.
Kathryn frowned, deciding it was best to hear his train of thought.
“What the fuck does that mean?”
“It means,” Keith said carefully, “that being Overseer doesn’t just make me important. It makes us targets.”
“Do you think sleeping with other women was part of protecting me too? The secret might be forgivable, but breaking our vows while I was faithful? I was faithful to you, Keith! While you’ve been out fucking...”
She paused as she realized what he had actually been doing.
“ ... While you were out there, impregnating hundreds of women!”
That hit him, and for that she was grateful in a bitter sort of way.
Keith looked away in shame as well as he damn well should.
“That isn’t what this is about,” he said, trying to defend his actions.
“No,” Kathryn replied coldly. “Apparently none of this is about what I am saying.”
“There were more important things,” Keith said, hoping that his words would clear this all up.
Kathryn had to restrain her own temper despite the fact that a man very nearly assaulted her in her own home. She inhaled deeply through her nose before exhaling through her mouth.
“What’s going to happen to the man that tried to rape your wife, then?”
Silence followed.
She did not know what Keith was thinking, but forgiveness was not a quality of life he would receive despite all of the amenities and privileges he received.
“Oh Michael?” Keith asked. “He’s being detained.”
“For trying to rape me?”
“Yes.”
“I wasn’t finished,” Kathryn said. “For trying to rape me or trying to rape the Overseer’s wife?”
“Bit of both,” Keith shrugged. “A panel will be convened or something. AIDEN will have to tell me what the proper procedure is, but he’ll remain imprisoned until judgment is passed, so he won’t harm you or anyone else ever again.”
Kathryn nodded faintly.
“Good.”
This was the only good to come from her husband’s secrecy.
Then Keith added:
“Also, that repair guy was arrested as an accomplice.”
The world stopped.
“Excuse me? Leo did nothing but try to protect me”
“He assaulted another resident,” Keith continued evenly. “Injured him severely. Under Vault law, that requires detainment pending investigation. That’s to say nothing of the fact that he was alone in our home with you.”
“He was protecting me!” Kathryn shouted. “I called for help! He showed up! That’s what a good person is supposed to do!”
“He attacked a resident.”
“He attacked a rapist!” Kathryn cried out. “He saved my life!”
“I’m sure that will be taken into consideration,” Keith replied with maddening calm.
Kathryn stared at him in disbelief. Her husband was enforcing the rule of law in the most ridiculous, fucked up manner.
“You cannot be serious.”
“I’m Overseer,” Keith said firmly. “That means I enforce order, even when it’s unpleasant.”
That was when she realized ... Keith was not enforcing the law. He was punishing a man for simply being alone with her. And for that, she knew she would never forgive him, especially after his infidelity.
That jealousy should have cost Leo his freedom was not right, but she could not make right all the wrongs in the world at that moment, so for that instant, she just played along.
The detention level was colder than the rest of Vault 615, or at least it felt that way to Kathryn.
With the help of AIDEN, she was directed to the detention level.
Despite the kindness of the robot, she hated that bucket of bolts because he was also in on the deception of her husband. In her mind, she wanted to blame Keith more regardless of whatever ‘protocols’ he said AIDEN informed him about.
Nevertheless, she was not against using the machine to get where she needed to go.
While she knew that the temperature remained carefully regulated like the entirety of the underground complex (probably somewhere between 70 and 80 degrees fahrenheit), she still shivered when she reached the portion of the Vault for criminals to be detained. There was something sterile about the lower corridors that made Kathryn feel unwelcome the moment the elevator doors opened.
If she were trapped in this place, she would loath the piece of shit Vault all the more.
For the first time since waking in the Vault, Kathryn understood what true isolation might look like.
Two armed security officers stood outside a reinforced door marked DETENTION in faded white lettering. Both men straightened slightly when they recognized her.
“Mrs. Walker,” one greeted respectfully.
Kathryn hated how quickly everyone had started looking at her differently after Keith revealed himself as Overseer. There she was, his prized wife, while he was out and about fucking anything with two legs all for the ‘survival of the species’.
The older of the two guards stepped forward. His badge identified him as Chief Donnelly.
“We weren’t expecting you down here, ma’am.”
Kathryn folded her arms loosely across herself. She knew that before the bombs fell, she was a commodity to be ogled. At this moment, she felt as though she were being revered for not doing anything, and this feeling was altogether worse to experience.
“I came to see Leo.”
Donnelly exchanged a brief glance with the younger guard before nodding once.
“Of course.”
He made it seem like he understood, but she knew he did not. How could he? The complexity and upending of her life in the last twenty four hours had changed everything that she thought was foundational to her life.
That said nothing of the fact that she had to get over the fact that someone had tried to forcibly have sex with her, and she had to be emotionally okay to have the conversations she had had and would have in the next day or two.
He reached for the security door and unlocked it with a key attached to his belt.
“He’s the only one awake right now,” Donnelly explained. “The other prisoner’s sedated after the beating he took.”
Kathryn felt no guilt hearing that; none whatsoever. Michael deserved that and more. She might have sympathized with him, given what Keith did, but nothing Keith did justified Michael’s actions.
As the door opened, Donnelly lowered his voice slightly.
“If you’d prefer privacy, Mrs. Walker, I can clear the level for a few minutes.”
The implication sat heavily in Kathryn’s stomach. Not because it was inappropriate, but because no one would have offered such a thing to her before Keith became Overseer.
All she could feel was tired and powerlessly an accessory to her husband.
“That won’t be necessary,” Kathryn said without thinking.
The truth was, she did want to be alone with Leo. Her words were for him, not anyone else, but to be given courtesy because of who she was married to felt cheap and disregarded her as a person.
