“If you see me comin’, better step aside
A lotta men didn’t, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don’t get you
Then the left one will!”

She did not see him swing the polysilicate composite wrench. The tool struck Michael on his left bicep-tricep area. When Michael toppled over, Kathryn found the long wrench (which was for leverage) in her lap.
Leo had thrown it to her, but she was in such a daze that she could not understand why.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Leo shouted out again.
He grabbed Michael by the neck, and Kathryn could see every muscle in Leo’s body being put to work for one single goal: protecting her.
He threw a left, then a right. One blow struck the face, and the other hit Michael in the stomach. The out of shape middle aged man was no match for a man in his early thirties, who spent his days battling metal until it submitted to his whims.
Michael tried to throw an offense of his own, but from Kathryn’s point of view, Leo moved with uncanny speed. He retaliated with another combination of punches, so that Michael would never think to try to consider doing such a thing again. Michael almost tried to stand up, but Leo threw an uppercut for such a temerity, and Michael fell onto his back.
Then, slowly, like a man approaching a wounded animal, Leo slowly approached Kathryn. He bent at the knee, being sure to keep his feet on the ground.
“Are you okay?” he asked calmly.
For all of his effort, he could not calm himself enough to not be breathing heavily.
Kathryn, for all of her effort, could not stop herself from shaking. She did not want to be touched by anyone, not even Leo.
Not even ... she thought.
She wondered why she had categorized him like that. Was he truly that important to her? She did not know him as she knew other people, like her husband ... like Michael.
Time did not guarantee understanding nor true, honest connection.
Realization about all of this felt as though it occurred over several minutes, but when Kathryn wrapped her arms around Leo, she recognized that it was only a few seconds.
For how much she had known Michael and how little she knew Leo, she realized that when she called out for help, he was there, and for that, she wrapped her arms around him and kissed his cheek five, ten, a hundred times.
And then, without even knowing it, a moment of truth came.
She pulled back, and she looked into Leo’s eyes.
