There was some big event that pulled everyone away the next morning after breakfast.
An announcement had been made over the intercom that had explained that the proceeding would be important, but attendance was not mandatory.
Given that the bulk of the Vault did not have jobs that kept them busy at all times, Kathryn suspected there would be a great many people going.
The whole business could be about food in the cafeteria area, and people would go.
Kathryn shook her head, wondering what she could do.
No part of her wanted to go to the event, and truthfully, she was beginning to wonder if Ashley was right about her.
Life had become far more comfortable since she had awoken in the Vault. Kathryn missed the mundaneness of her everyday life. So quickly she had forgotten that it was a privilege to have a boring life where her biggest problem was what kind of dish soap she would use to ensure her kitchen’s sink was not overflowing.
That was when the decision as to what to do was taken from her. Thinking of a clean home made Kathryn try to bring such a simple idea into fruition. From scraps of napkins around the dining room to mopping the shining floor, she went about the business of making sure her home was perfect.
Keith had left, likely to go to the assembly. There was no Leo to be rude to, and for that, she was grateful. Her friends, if she could still call them that, were likely going about their lives.
She might have stayed in that bliss about wondering about those around her if she had not heard the his and turning of the latch to her home.
When she looked up, she saw Michael.
Only, he was not all there.
She could see madness in his bloodshot eyes. He was in his vault jumpsuit and looked all the worse for it. He had stubble on his jaw.
Kathryn was unable to look away from the twisted version of Michael.
“No one home, eh?” Michael asked. “Bad news for him; worse for you.”
“What do you think you’re doing?” Kathryn asked as she saw him coming towards her.
She had seen nature documentaries where a lion would track down a gazelle before pouncing and tearing the prey limb from limb.
At that particular moment, she knew she was the gazelle, and this maddened, exhausting form of a man was the lion.
“I think I should feel better. Don’t you?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
Truthfully, she didn’t. She had no clue what the fuck was going on or why.
“He knows he hurt me. He knows what he did was wrong.”
“Michael ... I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“No...” Michael confessed. “But... he does!”
Kathryn found herself backed against a wall. The kitchen was not far, but she knew in the deepest part of her soul that if she ran to grab a rolling pin or a knife, Michael would see what she was doing and he would retaliate.
No part of her wanted to surrender or just give in to what might happen, given what she suspected his intentions were, but she also knew that if she fought, then it would end with her death.
“You don’t fuck another man’s wife,” Michael said. “But maybe if I fuck you, we will be even. Maybe if I get what he isn’t taking care of at him...”
He grabbed her and pinned her against the wall.
“It’s what you would want, isn’t it?”
Kathryn froze as she knew what was coming.
