The following summer, the beach house in Zapallar welcomed its first full family gathering. The invitation had arrived on thick cream cardstock. Elegant script across the front read: “A Weekend of Sun and Sea, Come as You Are.”
Ben and Lainey pulled up first, just before mid-morning. Ben stepped out of the SUV. He stood at average height with brown wavy hair and a light scratchy beard that looked lived-in rather than styled. He shifted Valentina onto his hip. Her dark curls were tousled from the drive and she looked petite, just like her mother. Lainey followed close behind. Her very petite frame already showed the gentle swell of her second pregnancy Beneath a loose linen cover-up that draped over her bikini.
Sean and Emi met them together at the wide front door. Emi stood beside her husband with a radiant smile, one hand resting lightly on her own three-month swell. She wore a simple white sundress that clung gently to her curves. Sean clapped Ben on the back.
“It’s your first time here. Let us show you around properly.”
Emi stepped forward and pulled Lainey into a warm hug, their bodies pressing close for a moment. “I am so glad you are finally here with Ben,” she whispered near Lainey’s ear before pulling back with a knowing look. “Everything is ready for you.”
They led the couple through the open living spaces. The house felt comfortably lived-in now. Sunlight poured across pale tiles that had faint sandy footprints from earlier mornings. A stack of well-read paperbacks rested on the low coffee table beside a half-finished puzzle Emi had started the day before. They passed the east wing nursery where Marisol was already arranging fresh crib sheets and soft blankets next to a few familiar stuffed animals that had stayed behind from last time. Then they stepped out onto the wide veranda that overlooked the Pacific. The ocean stretched bright and endless below, and the wooden railing showed the soft weathering of salt air.
“The west side stays adults only, once it gets dark,” Sean said, keeping his tone easy.
Ben gave a short laugh and looked out at the view. After Sean excused himself to check on the grill, Emi gave Lainey’s hand a gentle squeeze and slipped away to let them have a moment. Lainey leaned against the railing beside Ben, the breeze lifting the edge of her cover-up.
“You remember what I told you about this place,” she said softly, her voice warm. “The way the light changes everything in the evenings.”
Ben glanced back toward the house, then turned to her with a small, knowing smile. He rested his free hand on the gentle curve of her belly. “I remember everything you told me. Every detail. And I remember who made this possible too.” His thumb traced a slow circle over the fabric. “It feels different seeing it all with my own eyes. Knowing how much you love it here. Knowing everything that has happened here.”
Lainey’s eyes softened. She rose onto her toes and kissed him lightly, lingering just long enough for him to feel her smile against his mouth. “It’s still our life, Ben. Our family. This weekend is just ... more honest. You have been so good about all of it. I see how you look at Valentina and I know you mean it when you say she is ours.”
He nodded, pressing his forehead to hers for a moment. “I am. I have been for a while now. As long as you keep looking at me like that when you come back to our bed, I am good. I want this for you. For us.”
Mati and Poli arrived about an hour later. Mateo slept soundly in his car seat. The boy looked sturdy with light olive skin, Poli’s sharp eyes, and those same dark curls. Mati, tall with tanned skin and brown hair cut close, unloaded bags from the trunk. Poli stretched beside the car. Her flowing maxi dress clung to her lush postpartum curves.
Sean and Emi greeted them warmly on the driveway. Emi hugged her older sister tightly, their embrace lingering with familiar affection. “This weekend is going to be perfect,” Emi said with a quiet smile as she pulled back. She brushed a curl from Poli’s face before turning to Mati. “Come, let us show you everything.”
They gave the couple the same tour for Mati’s Benefit. Poli moved through the house with easy familiarity and pointed out the large woven basket in the corner where extra beach towels were kept and the spot by the window where the afternoon light was best for nursing. Emi walked beside her, adding small details here and there.
“Marisol is the best, she makes it a lot easier to unwind, knowing that the little ones are well taken care of,” Sean explained as they passed the nursery again. He paused to adjust one of the blankets over a crib, his hand moving with the casual confidence of someone who had done it many times before.
After the tour ended and Sean and Emi stepped away, Poli caught Mati’s hand and tugged him gently into the shaded hallway outside their assigned bedroom. She turned to face him, both hands resting on his chest as she looked up at him with a secret little spark in her eyes.
“This is the bed I told you about,” she said, nodding toward the open door. “The one that faces the ocean just right. I tried it out last time I was here with the girls. I kept thinking how much you would like it. How nice it would be to have you here in this house with me.” She bit her lip for a second, then added softly, “Mateo was so calm here last visit. He barely fussed at all once the waves started. Almost like he already knew the rhythm.”
Mati wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer, his chin resting on top of her head. “You have been talking about this house for months. I thought you were exaggerating, but it really is perfect. Mateo is going to love it. He has been so curious about everything lately, crawling after every new sound. Sometimes I watch him and think he has this intense little focus. Like nothing else matters until he figures it out.” He chuckled quietly. “It reminds me of something I’ve seen before, I just can’t quite place it.”
Poli smiled against his chest, a private thrill running through her at how close he was to the truth without realizing it. She rose up to kiss him, slow and deep, pressing her lush body into him with more heat than usual. “It is going to be such a good weekend. You here. Me here. Mateo safe and happy. I have been looking forward to this for so long.”
Andrès and Sofi were the last to arrive, pulling in just before lunch. Lucía toddled out of the car on unsteady but determined legs. Her full cheeks were flushed from the heat and her wavy hair bounced with each careful step, exactly like her mother’s. Andrès, darkly tanned with black hair and a neatly manicured black beard, carried the heavy diaper bag. He looked out at the view and grinned.
“This place is unreal.”
Sean and Emi welcomed them at the entrance. Emi immediately scooped up Lucía with a bright laugh and kissed her cheek before handing her back to Sofi. She hugged her younger sister next, whispering something brief and intimate in her ear that made Sofi’s eyes flash with excitement. Then Emi turned to Andrès with an easy, welcoming smile.
Sean took them on the same walk through the house. Sofi already knew every corner. She trailed her fingers along the back of the worn leather sofa in the living room and smiled at the small collection of seashells the sisters had gathered on previous trips, now displayed on a shelf near the kitchen. In the shaded breezeway, Emi gave Sofi’s arm a light, conspiratorial squeeze before excusing herself. Sofi pulled Andrès aside for a longer moment. She wrapped her arms around his neck and looked up at him with bright, mischievous eyes.
“You should see the bedroom they gave us,” she said, voice low and playful. “Huge window right over the water. The mattress is ridiculous. I tested it out last time and could not stop smiling the whole night. Lucía is going to go wild here. She already tries to climb everything at home. I bet she will be crawling straight toward those waves.” She leaned in closer, lips brushing his ear. “And I cannot wait to have you all to myself in that big bed while she naps. No interruptions. Just us.”
Andrès set the diaper bag down and slid his hands around her waist, drawing her in until their bodies aligned. “You have been hyping this trip for weeks. I thought you were just excited about the beach, but I get it now. This is next level.” He leaned down and kissed her forehead, then her lips, taking his time. “I love seeing you like this, Sofi. Relaxed. Happy. You look beautiful here already. And yeah, Lucía has that same fire in her eyes. People say she has your smile, but sometimes she gets this look like she is daring the world. Family weekends like this are going to be good for her. For all of us.”
Sofi laughed softly and rested her head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat for a second while a secret rush of excitement ran through her. She loved how completely unaware he was. “It is going to be so good for all of us. You, me, Lucía. No work emails, no schedules. Just sun and us.” She tilted her head back to meet his eyes again, her voice dropping to a teasing whisper. “Promise me you will let yourself enjoy every single second. I have big plans for you this weekend.”
Andrès grinned and squeezed her a little tighter. “Promise. I am all yours this weekend. Whatever you want to do, I am in.”
The house filled with voices and movement as everyone settled in. Sean and Emi moved between the groups with calm confidence, answering questions about the tide schedule and which rooms had the best breeze. Emi’s laughter mixed easily with her sisters’ as they shared small, knowing glances. The scent of salt air mixed with sunscreen, the faint char of wood starting in the grill, and the subtle jasmine from the vines that climbed the outer walls. Sofia’s forgotten sippy cup from earlier still sat on a side table, and the refrigerator held bottles of local wine Emi had chosen weeks ago. The children’s laughter and soft babbling drifted from the nursery area where Marisol gently guided the one-year-olds toward afternoon naps. Everything felt like a normal family weekend on the surface, yet small currents of awareness passed between Sean, Emi, and the other women whenever their eyes met across the rooms.
The day unfolded with the easy rhythm of a true family escape. The beach stretched wide and golden under the Chilean sun. Sunscreen was passed around in sticky bottles, laughter rose over the sound of waves, and cold pisco sours clinked under the shaded palapa. The one-year-olds moved with that perfect mix of curiosity and wobbly determination. Marisol kept careful watch from a low chair near the water’s edge, her presence calm and steady.
Mateo crawled straight toward the gentle waves on chubby knees, shrieking with delight every time the foam touched his toes. Mati stayed close, steadying him with one hand and laughing softly when the little boy tried to chase a retreating wave and ended up sitting down hard in the wet sand. Lucía toddled after her cousin with single-minded focus, Bending to grab fistfuls of seashells and immediately trying to put them in her mouth. Sofi scooped her up each time with a patient smile, wiping sand from her full cheeks.
Sofía arrived with Emi in the early afternoon, bright-eyed and full of energy. The little girl had her mother’s dark waves and the same fearless grin. She immediately crawled across the blanket toward Valentina, who had just woken from a nap in Ben’s arms. Valentina, petite and dark-haired like Lainey, reached out with both hands and the two girls babbled at each other in their private language. Ben watched them with a quiet, content expression, one arm still looped around Lainey’s shoulders.
Sean stood at the portable barbecue a short distance away, flipping fresh fish filets with relaxed confidence. The aroma of grilled corvina and lemon drifted on the breeze. The women stayed close to him in their light dresses and bikinis, passing a chilled bottle of sparkling water between them. Emi leaned against Sean’s side for a moment, her hand resting casually on his lower back while she spoke to her sisters. Poli and Sofi exchanged quick, secret smiles with her. Lainey stood slightly apart but joined the quiet laughter, her fingers brushing Emi’s arm in easy affection.
Every so often Sean would glance over at the group, his eyes lingering on each woman with quiet possession. Emi noticed every look. She would catch her sisters’ eyes and give the smallest nod, a silent reminder of the truth they all carried. Poli’s cheeks flushed with private excitement whenever Sean’s hand brushed her waist while reaching for another plate. Sofi bit her lip and looked away toward the ocean, clearly enjoying the thrill of standing so close to him while Andrès built sand piles with Lucía only twenty yards away.
As the sun began its slow descent, painting the sky in soft oranges and pinks, the children’s energy finally started to fade. Marisol gathered the toddlers one by one, carrying them up to the house for bath time. Their sleepy protests and soft babbling faded behind the closing door. The adults lingered on the warm sand, the day’s heat still rising gently around them. The men stretched out on a large woven mat with cold beers in hand, conversation flowing without effort.
Andrès wiped a bead of sweat from his brow and nodded toward Lucía’s abandoned plastic bucket rolling lazily in the breeze. “She really threw herself into those shells today. I swear she tried to taste every single one.”
Sofi laughed softly from where she sat nearby, leaning back on her elbows. “She’s always putting things in her mouth now, we’ve had to keep an eye on her constantly.”
Mati tipped his bottle toward the small, lopsided sand structure Mateo had helped create before losing interest. “Mateo gets so focused on one thing and then suddenly he is done with it. He kept patting the sand like he was trying to make it perfect. Then he just crawled away without looking back.”
Ben grinned, cradling his empty bottle against his chest. “Valentina is the same. She walks a few steps, falls, and immediately tries again. Lainey keeps saying she gets her determination from me, but I think she is all her own person.”
The men chuckled and shifted into lighter talk about baby gates and how impossible it was to fully childproof a house in Santiago. Their voices carried easy camaraderie, completely unaware of the undercurrent around them.
The women sat a little apart at first, but as twilight settled in soft pinks and deep violets, they drew closer together. Emi leaned back against Sean’s chest, her hand resting casually on his thigh. Poli and Sofi mirrored the intimacy, their bodies relaxed but their eyes bright with something sharper than the fading light. Lainey stayed nestled against Ben, yet she kept stealing glances toward Sean, her fingers tracing slow circles on her own pregnant belly.
The air grew heavier, warmer. Sean’s hand drifted up Emi’s side, thumb brushing the underside of her breast through the thin fabric. She shivered visibly and pressed back into him. Poli noticed and let out a quiet, breathy laugh, her own hand sliding higher on Mati’s leg. Sofi bit her lip and shifted closer to Andrès, but her gaze kept drifting to Sean.
Andrès took another sip of his beer, oblivious. “We should do this more often. The kids are out cold already.”
Mati nodded, smiling. “Agreed. It feels good to just sit and do nothing for once.”
Ben stayed quiet, a small, knowing smile on his face as he watched the women.
Emi was the first to move. She stood slowly, the last rays of sunlight catching her skin. Without a word she slipped the straps of her linen dress off her shoulders. The fabric whispered down her body and pooled at her feet, revealing her gently rounded three-month belly and heavy breasts slightly glistening with milk.
As twilight deepened into deep violet and rose, Emi stood first. She slipped the thin linen dress from her shoulders and let it fall. Her three-month pregnant belly and heavy breasts, already leaking slow beads of milk, glowed in the fading light.
Mati and Andrès bolted upright, eyes wide.
“What the hell—” Mati breathed, voice cracking.
“Emi ... what are you doing?” Andrès demanded, starting to push himself up from the mat.
Poli and Sofi moved at once. They rose together and, without a word, stripped at the same time. Poli’s flowing maxi dress and Sofi’s light cotton sundress slid down their bodies and pooled at their feet. Poli’s lush postpartum curves and puffy cone-shaped nipples, dark rose and leaking in slow pulses, caught the last light. Sofi’s fuller frame and dark nipples, already leaking thin streams down her breasts, stood exposed beside her sister.
Poli immediately took Mati’s trembling hands in both of hers, stroking his palms with tender thumbs. Sofi gripped Andrès’s shoulder hard and forced him back down onto the mat.
Emi stood naked and steady before them, the surf rolling softly behind her.
“We have been keeping a secret from you,” she said clearly. “ And we are done hiding it.”
Poli looked straight into Mati’s eyes, voice thick with emotion and tears shimmering on her lashes.
