“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet?”

— Juliet Capulet, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Act II, Scene II (the “balcony scene”). Composed c. 1595–1596. First published in quarto editions (1597 and later); widely circulated in the First Folio (1623). Public domain.

Endurance was a quality bestowed to the gardens of Olympus because that temporary foliage was surrounded by immortal beings of the highest order.

Every tree, every vine, every flower existed in a state of perfected stillness because they complied with their surroundings. A leaf would not so much as wilt and petals would not fall unless by the bidding of the Queen of Olympus herself. When a breeze came, many believed it was because Hera ordained it.

Persephone walked the paths of this great city and one of its gardens beside that of Athena.

Athena spoke as they walked. Her tone was instructive because of a goddess of wisdom, it was impossible not to turn any moment into a teaching moment.

“Olympus was not always as you see it,” she said, gesturing to the vast expanse beyond them. “In the earliest days, this mountain was little more than a seat of power surrounded by stone and rock. This mountain was formed from the union of Gaia and Ouranos in their first coupling. Chaos oversaw this so that all might know that our mountain was forever.”

Persephone nodded faintly.

She did not hear her.

“Before my father,” Athena continued, “no court existed here. First Gaia and Ouranos reigned, but then Cronos and Rhea. This place was for the king and queen alone, and it was not shared, but rather, possessed.”

Persephone’s gaze drifted as she listened.

Possessed.

The word lingered in Persephone’s mind even though Athena had already moved past it.

“ ... and when Zeus took power, he reshaped Olympus into what you see now. He made it a city that could be a center for divine order,” Athena said.

Persephone’s lips pressed together.

This city, to Persephone, felt very much like a cage.

Her thoughts turned inward. Athena’s dissertation was all but forgotten. Even the words made something crystal clear to Persephone: They all want something from me.

Her mother’s face came first. Then, Hera. At the moment, Athena.

Her mother’s love was suffocating, keeping Persephone small. Hera was handing Persephone to another, and even Athena was doing nothing more than babysitting Persephone.

For all of this, Persephone understood that she was nothing more than a prized animal being passed off from person to person.

Athena coughed loud enough to cut cleanly through Persephone’s thoughts.

Persephone blinked, turning her head.

“Yes?”

Athena studied the young maid for a moment.

“Who,” Athena asked, “was meant to be queen of Olympus before Hera?”

This was a question to make sure that Persephone was paying attention, but Persephone had always been a smart girl, and she listened when others spoke.

“Metis,” she said. “I believe she was your mother.”

Something about how Persephone had said the words had stilled Athena, making the warrior goddess flinch and freeze.

“My mother instructed me about the history of Olympus, from its conception to the Great War and the crowning of the Three Kings and more,” she said simply. “Well, when I was younger.”

“Then you were taught well,” she said with a mild, measured approval.

Persephone met her gaze.

For the first time since arriving on Olympus, there was something in Athena’s expression that felt authentic and freely given.

What this warrior goddess did not understand was that Olympus meant more to Persephone than just a history. The very mountain could provide an existence beyond Demeter where Persephone could shape her own existence and be her own person.

Zeus’ palace stood apart even as he did.

Amphitrite did not hesitate as she entered. She did not care about all of the pomp and bluster that he brought down on others.

The guards did not stop her. They would not dare.

At the far end of the hall, before an open terrace that looked down upon the living realm itself, stood Zeus.

He did not turn when she approached.

“You walk boldly,” he said, his voice carrying easily through the vast chamber. “For someone who comes unannounced and uninvited.”

Amphitrite crossed her arms over her chest in irritation.

“I did not ask to be your ambassador either, but you decided to make a game of it and force me to be here. Let me guess? To punish your brother?”

Zeus turned, and he did not look like the triumphant ruler that he allowed others to see.

“What do you want, Amphitrite? Whatever issue between yourself and me, we can work it over...”

“About being ambassador,” Amphitrite said.

“You want that gone because you feel I have been coming onto you too much? Fine. It’s gone. Go back to Poseidonus. Tell my brother I made a mistake.”

She paused, looking at Zeus in new eyes. Never in one hundred thousand million years did she expect one such as this. For a moment, she wondered if this was what bare naked truth from the king looked like.

Faced by this newfound Zeus, Amphitrite considered another tactic.
