“Look into his angel eyes

One look and you’re hypnotized...

... Then one day you’ll find out he wears a disguise

Don’t look too deep into those angel eyes”

The Underworld did not not make noise. Often the blackness of the place absorbed every detail, from objects to people.

Hades stood before a polished slab of obsidian.

Behind him, Minthe leaned on one of the pillars. Her arms were crossed in irritation.

She was in a gown of red and black.

“Then, they will never accept me?” she asked.

“I do not believe so,” he replied, shaking his head. “They tried citing your indifference and inability to relate to the populace of Olympus.”

Minthe let out a single, judgmental laugh.

“Oh that’s rich!”

“Their prejudice is not new, nor should it be relevant,” Hades remarked.

“Not relevant?” Minthe echoed in irritation. “Your brothers do nothing to respect your presence. They expect you to go to Olympus when Zeus lifts a finger. They make you go to them when you deal with the hardest parts of existence, Hades!”

To this, the Chthonic King had no immediate response.

“I am aware,” he got out.

“They whisper and gossip about everything. If you are seen as lesser, what chance do I have?” Minthe asked.

Minthe stepped forward, turning her lover to face him

“They might not whisper about you that way because they know you’re as strong as Zeus, if not stronger.”

To that, Hades could say nothing. There had long since been a suspicion that Hades was stronger than his brothers. This rumor was started when he first descended to the Throne of the Underworld and destroyed the spirit of Ouranos. Metis likely was the one to spread that rumor.

“But there is no such compunction when it comes to me, Hades!”

“No, there is not, and I brought forth that complaint to my brothers,” Hades asserted.

“Did they listen? Did they offer any real paths forward for us or was it just the same platitudes?”

Hades shook his head.

She looked up at him and shook her head as tears started to form.

“You do not understand,” she said quietly. “I do not mind becoming a Queen of a realm no one cares about, but I don’t want to be snubbed and mistreated just because I am a Dryad. It isn’t fair, Hades!”

“No,” Hades agreed, wiping away a tear. “It is not.”

“Even if I ate that pomegranate that you did, their thoughts on me won’t change, Hades!” Minthe continued. “They will still see me as lesser, and they won’t change unless they choose to change”

“And you would have me make them?” Hades asked.

He shook his head as he wished he could give her her heart’s desire.

“I am powerful, Minthe, but I can’t make them see sense.”

“I know you stand beside me,” Minthe said, picking up his hand and kissing the back of it. “Just ... sometimes, your love isn’t enough. I wish it were, Hades. I do, but I...”

She trailed off, but Hades leaned down and kissed her cheek.

“I do understand,” he said. “They may not treat me as they treat you, but I do understand.”

“Its not enough,” she repeated.

“The gods of Olympus care about bloodlines,” he said. “You know that I do not. Who you are matters far more than what you are.”

Minthe did not respond right away.

When she found words, she kissed him on the lips with a soft tenderness that spoke of their centuries together.

“I know; that is why I love you,” she said. “But that is why this hurts so much. I want to be with you, but being with you and being Queen of your Realms are two different things.”

Hades stilled, hoping that she was not giving up on him as Hera did or showing indifference as Nyx once had.

“I know their mistreatment of me matters to you, but unless they change, I will be standing alone in a room. Don’t you see that?”

“I do,” Hades said.

More tears were falling down Minthe’s face.

“I will not marry you unless they accept me, Hades,” she said, more firmly. “I deserve more than their scorn or tolerance when they feel giving. I love you; you love me. That should be good enough for them to accept me and show me courtesy and respect.”

“I do understand,” Hades said, lowering his head. “If you mean to leave—”

“Leave?” Minthe snapped.

She grabbed Hades by the jaw and made him look at her.

“Hades, get this through your thick head, I love you! My anger is at your brothers, not you!”

“But you just said—”

“I said I would not marry you and be your queen. I never said I was going to give up on us just because you have a piece of shit family.”

“Minthe, you know I find that course language unbecoming,” Hades said.

Minthe smirked.

“Well, we both know you can show me how best you use your tongue.”

Hades smiled, taking his lover up in his arms and pressing his lips on hers.

Time was passing and Aphrodite had no answers.

When she was a young goddess, the solution would have been simple. She would have just slept with someone else and satisfied her wants.

What were people if not a conduit to please or be pleased by her?

Living her life as such had made her life easy to live.
