New Year’s was drawing near. Yuri had, of course, seen the city being decorated for the holidays, but he truly felt the season was close only when, delayed at work, he came home and saw it. In the middle of the room stood a dressed tree, its fantastic outline barely sketched in the half-dark, filling the place with the resinous smell of pine.
“Beautiful?” Annette asked, pleased with herself.
She knew perfectly well it was beautiful.
“Wonderful,” Yuri admitted honestly. “Feels like childhood.”
“I tried! Omar helped me choose the tree and carry it back from the market.”
Yuri tensed. Omar again! How did that man keep crawling back into things just when you had finally stopped thinking about him? Not a man but a curse.
“That ... good-for-nothing?”
“And what exactly is a good-for-nothing?” Annette asked, taken aback.
“A person who, instead of working properly, having a family, and living a normal life, writhes around with strange desires, flounders in doubt, is dissatisfied with everything, has no idea what anything means -- and in the end his life passes by, barren and wasted!”
“There you go again with your hostility toward him. Why do you dislike him so much?”
