Jennifer Rollins sat in her penthouse in Atlanta eating her breakfast silently feeling sad. The TV was playing the news in the background. She hadn’t heard from Jalen in a while, and she wondered if her hesitation to embrace him ultimately pushed him away.

She was just starting to chastise herself, when all of sudden she noticed the news cut to a report of a prominent Atlanta figure being arrested. A female reporter was standing in front of an office building reporting on the story.

“Chris Westward, a prominent Atlanta lawyer, was arrested early this morning on charges related to kidnapping, aggravated assault, and criminal conspiracy. Sources confirm that Westward, who has been embroiled in a contentious divorce battle with his estranged wife Megan Westward, could face more charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and possibly even state RICO charges among others.”

Jennifer’s breath caught in her throat as she turned the volume up, her long red nails pressing the remote buttons with urgency. Her green eyes widened as she listened to the anchor’s words, her breakfast now completely forgotten.

“Westward is alleged to have harassed and stalked his soon-to-be ex-wife and known associates of her, including his former contractor, Jalen Moss, who reportedly aided in her fleeing her husband. Chris Westward is also accused of arranging the kidnapping of his wife in a retaliatory move after she reportedly demanded over three million dollars from him in their divorce settlement.”

Jennifer sat frozen in her seat as she processed what she had just heard on the news. Chris Westward was arrested. The name sent a chill down her spine. She had heard of him even before Jalen had told her about him before. Most people in Atlanta’s legal and business circles did. He had kidnapped his wife Megan, one of the other seven women in Jalen’s life. The thought sent another shiver down her spine.

Jennifer had assumed Jalen’s silence meant that he had moved on, but now, she realized the truth. He wasn’t ignoring her. He was dealing with all of this. The kidnapping of one of the mothers of his children and the entire case against Chris Westward. Jalen and those seven women had been fighting a war, and she had been sitting on the sidelines thinking he had forgotten about her.

She cursed under her breath, rubbing her forehead. She hated being wrong, and she hated even more the realization that she had been unfair to Jalen. She reached for her phone and quickly scrolled through her messages. The last time she and Jalen texted was when she told him how he made her feel things outside of her comfort zone. Now, knowing everything he had been going through, she couldn’t just sit here and do nothing.

Jennifer inhaled deeply and typed:

Jennifer: “Jalen, I just saw the news. I had no idea you were dealing with all of this. I thought you didn’t want to talk to me, but now I see that wasn’t the case. I hope you and Megan are okay. Can we talk when you’re able?

She hesitated for only a moment before hitting SEND.

Jalen didn’t respond until the next day because, unbeknownst to Jennifer, he had been preoccupied with spending time with Megan during the day and then celebrating Chris Westward’s arrest with all seven women that night.

They all met up at Capital Grille just outside of downtown Atlanta at 8 PM where they all enjoyed a fancy dinner together. Megan went home with Jalen where they engaged in more sexual activity before finally going to sleep around 1:30 AM.

Jalen woke around 8:45 AM and finally checked his messages. His heart lurched when he saw that he missed the text from Jennifer, which had come the previous day. He quickly typed out a message.

Jalen: “Hey. I’m so sorry you haven’t heard from me. I can’t even begin to tell you what’s been going on. Can I see you today?

About twenty minutes later, Jennifer woke and rolled over to check her phone. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw that Jalen had finally texted her back.

She stared at her phone, rereading his message. She had been waiting for a response all night, telling herself she wouldn’t be bothered if he didn’t reply, but now that he had ... she felt her pulse quicken.

“Can I see you today?” Those words seem to hit deeper than they should have.

Jennifer hesitated. Not because she didn’t want to see him, she definitely did, but because she knew what it would mean. If she agreed to this, she wouldn’t be able to hide behind her excuses anymore or pretend she wasn’t drawn to him in a way that scared her.

She exhaled and typed back:

Jennifer: “Yeah. Come by my place. I’ll text you the address.

Less than a minute later, he replied.

Jalen: “I’ll be there at 11.

Jennifer quickly stood up, running a hand through her long red hair. Damn it. Why does this feel like a moment I can’t come back from?

She spent the next ninety minutes getting ready. Once she’d showered and slipped on her silk robe, she moved to the mirror and sat down, checking her reflection. She then did her hair and her makeup.

She opted for a more minimal look. Just mascara and a hint of gloss. Normally, she’d go all out when she knew she was seeing a man, especially one like Jalen, but something told her he wouldn’t care about all that.

Still, she opted for something in between. She chose a simple yet elegant outfit. A form-fitting dark green wrap dress that complemented her hair, paired with black leather Christian Louboutin high-heels. She left her makeup natural, just enhancing what was already there. It was effortless, but she still felt confident in her look.

By the time she heard the knock at the door at 11:02 AM, her heart was already racing. Jennifer took a deep breath, then opened the door.

Jalen stood there, looking even than she remembered in a fitted burgundy button-up and dark jeans. His eyes scanned her, and a slow, appreciative smile spread across his lips.

“Damn,” he said softly. “You look amazing.”

Jennifer smiled back, stepping aside to let him in. “I try.”

As soon as the door closed behind him, she felt it again. It was that same inexplicable feeling of something pulling her toward him. That same feeling he had kept describing to her when they met at St. Regis Bar, which she had kept denying existed.

Jalen entered, taking in her penthouse. He surveyed the sleek and modern architecture, with the mix of deep emerald and gold accents. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcased a breathtaking view of the Atlanta skyline, which Jennifer loved. Everything about the space encapsulated the Jessica Robinson persona: elegant, polished, and a little untouchable.

Jennifer walked ahead of him, the click-clack of her heels echoing against the marble floors. “Drink?” she asked.

“Water’s fine,” Jalen said, sounding like he didn’t want to make this feel like anything other than what it was. A conversation they both needed to have.

Jennifer grabbed two bottles of water from the fridge and handed one to him. They stood there for a moment, neither saying anything. The weight of everything unspoken lingered between them.

“So...” Jennifer started, leaning against the counter. “I saw the news.”

Jalen nodded. “Figured you did. Chris Westward is finally in jail where he belongs.”

Jennifer studied him, clearly trying to read between the lines of his calm demeanor. “And you’re okay?”

Jalen took a step closer, watching her carefully. “Are you okay?”

Jennifer faltered for a second. “Me?”

“Yeah, you.” Jalen leaned against the counter next to her. “You saw the news yesterday, and instead of shrugging it off, you hit me up. Why?”

Jennifer scoffed. “Don’t flatter yourself. I saw the news and saw that apparently Megan had been kidnapped so I wanted to make sure you and her were okay.”

Jalen smiled. “I appreciate that. But I’m just pointing out that for someone who’s been tryin’ really hard not to care, you sure do seem to care a lot.”

Jennifer rolled her eyes, but there was a slight twitch at the corner of her mouth. He wasn’t wrong, and he knew it that she knew it.

“Maybe I just don’t like unfinished stories,” she muttered.

Jalen chuckled. “That what we are? A story?”

Jennifer turned her head to look at him with her green eyes searching his. For a long moment, she didn’t say anything. Then, finally, she spoke with her voice quieter this time.

“I don’t know what we are, Jalen.”

Jalen nodded slowly, then reached out and took her hand. She didn’t pull away.

“Then let’s figure it out,” he said softly.

Jennifer stared down at their hands for a moment before sighing. “Jalen, I didn’t know that you’ve been dealing with all this with Chris Westward, the threats, and Megan getting kidnapped. Jesus, and here I was thinking you were just ghosting me.”

Jalen squeezed her hand gently. “I’m sorry if I made you feel that way. But I would never do that to you.”

Jennifer scoffed but didn’t pull away. “I mean, I guess I have been kind of pushing you away. Can’t say I would’ve blamed you if you did.”

Jalen shook his head. “That’s not how I operate. You needed space, I gave it to you, but I did think about you, even when I had a million other things going on.”

Jennifer looked away, taking a deep breath. “You’re making this hard.”

“Making what hard?”

Jennifer turned back to him, her lips pressing together. She was torn. She had told herself early on that she wouldn’t let this go far, especially since this man had seven other women already in his life. But now, she had found herself thinking about him when he wasn’t around, and now that he was here, she felt this warm feeling inside her and the urge to be physically closer to him.

“You’re making it hard to let go,” Jennifer finally said.

Jalen’s brow furrowed. “Who said you have to let go?”

Jennifer let out a breathy chuckle. “Oh, come on, Jalen. You and I both know your life is insane. Seven women, seven pregnancies, an attempted assassination, and a kidnapping? Yet somehow, I just keep getting pulled deeper into this, even when I told myself I wouldn’t.”

Jalen tilted his head. “You really want out?”

Jennifer opened her mouth, but no words came out. She hesitated, her fingers lightly gripping his. Then, she exhaled in frustration and looked down.

Jalen smiled knowingly. “That’s what I thought.”

Jennifer rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the way her lips twitched at his cocky tone. “You’re infuriating.”

“So, I’ve been told,” Jalen said smiling.

Jennifer sighed, then looked up at him again. “So, what now?”

Jalen laced his fingers with hers. “Well, I’d like to take you out again. Properly this time. No club or heavy conversations. Just you and me having a good time.”

Jennifer arched a brow. “Like a real date?”

Jalen nodded. “Yeah. Jennifer Rollins on a real date with Jalen Moss.”

Jennifer looked at him for a long moment, then finally, she cracked a smile. “Fine, but I’m picking the place.”

Jalen grinned. “Deal.”

“Let’s go,” Jennifer said. “And I’m driving by the way. I’m not a huge fan of your truck.”

“Hey! Don’t disrespect Sheila!” Jalen said in mock offense.

Jennifer laughed as she grabbed her purse and led the way to the door. “Sheila? Oh my God, you named your truck?”

Jalen scoffed, following her out. “Damn right I did. Sheila’s been with me through thick and thin.”

Jennifer rolled her eyes but still smiled. “Yeah, well, today, we’re rolling in something with a little more style.” She tossed him a playful smile.

They walked out to the parking garage where she clicked the unlock button on her key fob.

Jalen turned his head toward the sound of the beeping car, and his brows lifted in amusement. “A Mercedes AMG?! Damn, alright, big money.”

Jennifer shot him a smug glance as she slid into the driver’s seat. “Well, I am Jessica Robinson, after all.”

Jalen chuckled as he got in on the passenger side. “So, where are we going?”

Jennifer smiled. “You’ll see.”

Jalen relaxed into the seat, watching her as she expertly maneuvered out of the parking garage.

As Jennifer drove, she kept her expression neutral, but inside, her emotions were warring with each other. She wasn’t going to let Jalen see how much she had missed him. She wasn’t going to let herself fall too deep, but damn it, sitting next to him again, feeling his presence so close, hearing his deep, smooth voice made her feel something.

Jalen, always observant, leaned back in his seat and studied her for a moment. “So, you’re just gonna pretend like you didn’t miss me at all?”

Jennifer scoffed again, keeping her eyes on the road. “I don’t pretend anything.”

Jalen smiled. “Mhmm. So, no thoughts about me the last few weeks? No replays of certain moments in your head?”

Jennifer tightened her grip on the steering wheel. She refused to blush. “I’ve been busy.”

Jalen chuckled, clearly enjoying himself. “Oh, you’ve been busy, huh? That’s cute.”

She exhaled, trying to keep her cool. “Jalen.”

“Jennifer.”

She glanced at him briefly before returning her focus to the road. “Don’t be annoying.”

“I’ll stop if you admit it.”

“Admit what?”

“That you missed me.”

Jennifer rolled her eyes. “Jalen—”

“You know what? Never mind.” Jalen turned to face the window, his voice dripping with amusement. “I’ll just wait for the moment when you slip up and say it yourself.”

Jennifer let out a frustrated sigh. “God, you’re insufferable.”

Jalen smiled again, but he didn’t say anything else. He knew the truth, and whether she wanted to admit it or not, the way she kept sneaking glances at him when she thought he wasn’t looking told him everything he needed to know.

A few minutes later, she pulled into a quiet, scenic overlook, a hidden gem on the outskirts of the city with a perfect view of the skyline in the distance.

Jalen whistled low. “Damn, this is nice.”

Jennifer parked the car and turned off the engine. “I thought you could use a peaceful moment.”

Jalen turned to her, something softer in his eyes now. “That’s ... really thoughtful.”

Jennifer shifted in her seat, suddenly feeling exposed. “Well, you’ve been through a lot. Figured you might need to breathe.”

Jalen watched her closely, and for a brief moment, the teasing disappeared. “I appreciate this.”

She nodded, looking out at the view instead of him. She needed a second to compose herself because damn it, she really had missed him.

Jalen stepped out of the car, stretching slightly as he took in the breathtaking view. The sun was high in the sky, illuminating the city skyline. Jennifer followed, shutting the car door behind her and standing next to him with her arms crossed. The warm breeze lifted strands of her copper-red hair.

“You know,” Jalen started, placing his hands in his pockets. “For someone who’s been ‘busy’ and totally didn’t miss me, this is a pretty thoughtful thing to do.”

Jennifer exhaled sharply, shaking her head with a smile. “God, you just can’t help yourself, can you?”

“Nope,” Jalen said grinning. “I like messing with you.”

She turned to face him, tilting her head slightly. “You really are something else.”

“You like that about me.”

Jennifer gave him a long look with her lips slightly parted. She wanted to argue, but she didn’t because once again, infuriatingly so, he wasn’t wrong.

Instead, she just looked back at the view, choosing silence over confirmation. She had her eyes on the skyline, but she knew Jalen could see the shift in her expression, the slight tension in her jaw, and the way her fingers twitched slightly at her sides.

Finally, she exhaled. “I might have.”

Jalen raised an eyebrow. “Might have what?”

Jennifer turned to look at him fully, finally letting the weight of the moment settle. “Missed you! I might have missed you a little bit. Happy now?”

Jalen’s teasing smile softened into something more genuine. “Yeah. I am.”

For the first time in the conversation, Jennifer felt vulnerable, and it scared her. So, she deflected.
