Saturday morning around 10 am, Heidi met Jalen at his apartment. She had stopped at Chick-fil-A and bought breakfast for the two of them. She got two chicken biscuits and an orange juice for Jalen, and a hash brown and coffee for herself.

Then they hopped into his truck and headed to the first apartment complex.

As Jalen drove through the streets of Atlanta, he glanced over at Heidi, who was sipping her coffee and scrolling through her phone. She had a determined look on her face, her focus entirely on the apartment listings she had pulled up.

“You nervous?” he asked, reaching into the Chick-fil-A bag for his second biscuit.

Heidi shook her head, letting out a heavy sigh. “Not really nervous, just ready to be out of my parents’ house. I swear, my mom’s been watching me like a hawk lately. She knows something’s up.”

Jalen raised an eyebrow, taking a bite of his biscuit. “What do you mean?”

“It’s getting suffocating,” Heidi explained, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “She keeps ‘accidentally’ walking into my bedroom without knocking, trying to catch a glimpse of my laptop screen. The other day, she actually questioned me about the mileage on my car, asking why I was suddenly driving so much and where I was going. She’s even started cross-examining my friends to see if I’m secretly dating someone. And my dad...” She scoffed. “Well, my dad’s just himself. But between the two of them, the paranoia is at an all-time high. I need out before they start tracking my phone.”

Jalen chuckled knowingly, though his eyes held a protective edge. “Yeah, the sooner you’re in your own place, the better. You got a top choice yet?”

“Not yet,” Heidi admitted. “I’ve narrowed it down to three. Let’s see how they actually look in person.”

Their first stop was Alter at Brookhaven, a modern mid-rise not too far from Lenox Mall. As the leasing agent gave them a tour, Heidi took in the impressive amenities. The complex boasted a resort-style pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and sleek communal workspaces.

However, as they stepped into the available one-bedroom unit, Heidi’s excitement waned.

The units were beautifully updated with modern finishes and walking distance to great shopping. Unfortunately, the only units available in Heidi’s price range faced a heavily trafficked main road.

Jalen immediately walked over to the window and knocked on the glass. “Single pane,” he noted, turning to Heidi. “You’re gonna hear every siren, exhaust pipe, and honk at 3 AM.”

Heidi sighed, realizing he was right.

“I asked the agent about the units facing the quiet interior courtyard,” she whispered to Jalen as they walked back to the truck. “They’re completely waitlisted, and the one becoming available next month is almost four hundred dollars more than my budget. I don’t want to deal with a bunch of loud-ass neighbors or street noise.”

“Makes sense. What about the second one?” Jalen asked, starting the engine.

“That one’s in Midtown, near Piedmont Park,” she said, tucking a strand of her auburn hair behind her ear. “It’s pricier, but it’s got 24/7 security, and the units are really nice. Hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, a big-ass bathtub—” She shot him a look. “Which, yes, is important to me.”

Jalen smiled. “I wasn’t gonna say anything.”

“Yeah, right,” she muttered.

When they arrived at 77 12th, the luxury was undeniable. The high-rise offered sweeping, panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline. The unit they toured was pristine, and the bathroom truly did have the massive soaking tub Heidi had dreamed of.

But reality set in quickly once they sat down to discuss numbers. There were unbeatable skyline views, luxury finishes, top-tier security, and it was withing walking distance to Midtown’s best restaurants. The problem was that the rent was exorbitant.

“Parking isn’t included,” the leasing agent explained. “It’s an additional $150 a month per spot in the deck, and we require a two-month deposit for first-time renters without a co-signer.”

Heidi did the math in her head and her stomach dropped. It would completely wipe out her savings just to move in, leaving her no cushion to actually live on. To make matters worse, the specific floor plan she wanted wouldn’t even be available for another six weeks. She needed an immediate, clean break from her parents, not a month-and-a-half waiting game.

Once they were back in the truck, Heidi crossed it off her list. “Too expensive, and I can’t wait that long. The third one is in Sandy Springs called Perimeter 5550. It’s a little further out, but it’s more lowkey, and it’s got the best lease terms.”

Jalen nodded as he navigated back onto the highway. “Well, whatever feels right, we’ll make it happen.”

Heidi glanced at him and smiled. “‘We,’ huh?”

Jalen shrugged, keeping his eyes on the road. “Yeah. You think I’m not gonna be all up in your place? You know damn well I’ll be over there every chance I get.”

Heidi rolled her eyes but couldn’t fight the warmth spreading in her chest. “Yeah, yeah. Let’s just see if this last spot is actually worth it first.”

Thirty minutes later, as they pulled into the parking lot of Perimeter 5550 in Sandy Springs, Heidi took a deep breath. The vibe was instantly different from the first two. Tucked away amongst mature trees, the complex felt peaceful and secluded, a stark contrast to the concrete hustle of Midtown and the traffic of Brookhaven.

The leasing agent showed them a spacious one-bedroom unit that was available for immediate move-in.

It had a quiet, suburban feel while still being close enough to the city. The rent was comfortably within her budget, and they were offering a move-in special that waived the first month’s rent.

The downside was that it was further away from her law school, meaning a longer commute, however, it would still be manageable.

But what really sold Heidi wasn’t just the apartment. It was Jalen. Throughout the tour, he scrutinized every detail as if the apartment would be his as much as hers. He checked the water pressure in the shower, inspected the weather stripping on the front door, and grilled the leasing agent about maintenance response times and the lighting in the parking lot at night.

“You feel safe here?” Jalen asked her quietly while the agent stepped out to take a phone call.

Heidi looked around the spacious, sunlit living room, imagining her own furniture in the space. She imagined coming home here, turning the key in her own lock, completely free from her mother’s prying eyes and her father’s judgment.

“I do,” Heidi said, a genuine smile breaking across her face. “I really do. This is the one.”

This was the beginning of a new chapter. A step toward independence and securing her own life before she had to tell her parents the truth. By the end of the day, Heidi signed the lease for Perimeter 5550, deeply appreciative of how Jalen had anchored her through the entire process.

The rich scent of roasted garlic and wood-grilled chicken filled the dimly lit dining room of Carrabba’s. It was early for dinner, meaning the restaurant was mostly empty, affording them a quiet corner booth where they wouldn’t be overheard. After the exhausting sequence of touring and selecting an apartment earlier that afternoon, the heavy plates of Italian food felt like a necessary anchor.

Jalen sat across from Heidi, his demeanor carrying that unsettlingly calm, intellectual energy that seemed to naturally surface whenever they transitioned from chaos to quiet. He watched her carefully as she pushed a piece of Chicken Bryan around her plate.

“How are you holding up?” Jalen asked, his voice low and steady. “With the pregnancy symptoms, I mean. You were looking a little pale when we were walking through that second complex.”

Heidi sighed, dropping her fork and leaning back against the leather booth. “The nausea has actually backed off a little today, thank God. But the fatigue is ... it’s a lot. I feel like I could sleep for a week straight, and my chest is constantly sore. It’s just hard hiding all of this at the house while pretending everything is completely normal.”

“You’re doing the best you can,” Jalen said, his protective instinct kicking in as he reached across the table to gently squeeze her hand. “But that’s actually what I wanted to talk about. Hiding it.”

Heidi’s green eyes flickered up to his, the sudden shift in his tone instantly catching her attention. “What do you mean?”

“We picked out the apartment today. That’s a huge step,” Jalen began, his expression sobering. “But we need to be realistic about the timeline, and we need to talk about the worst-case scenario.”

Heidi swallowed hard, the remaining appetite she had vanishing. “Which is?”

“Which is your dad finding out before we’re ready,” Jalen said flatly. “Specifically, what happens if Tim finds out that you’re pregnant, and that I’m the father, before I’m done with the guest house project.”

The silence that followed wasn’t just heavy, it was suffocating. The mere thought of her father, a wealthy, deeply conservative Southern politician who expected absolute perfection from his daughter, discovering this reality felt akin to waiting for a bomb to detonate.

“If he finds out before we have all our pieces in place,” Heidi whispered, her voice trembling slightly, “he won’t just be mad, Jalen. He’ll go scorched earth. He’ll see it as a betrayal on every possible level. Politically, socially, and personally.”

Jalen didn’t flinch. He just nodded slowly, pulling a pen from his pocket and grabbing a clean white napkin from the edge of the table. He was a contractor; he dismantled massive problems by mapping them out structurally.

“Let’s break down exactly what that scorched-earth reaction looks like,” Jalen said, drawing a few quick lines on the napkin to compartmentalize the chaos into a tangible framework.

“If you your dad found out everything today...” he said slowly as he wrote on the napkin. “The first thing he’ll likely do ... is immediately terminate my contract for the guest house.”

Heidi swallowed then nodded.

That means...” Jalen said as he continued to write, “that I lose out on largest payout of my career and would jeopardize the financial cushion to support you, me, our baby, and the others.”

Heidi looked closer at the napkin and saw what Jalen had written.

Jalen Professional Threat -> Immediate termination of contract for the guest house -> Lose largest payout of career; Immediate financial security compromised

He looked up from the napkin and looked at Heidi exhaling. Heidi looked back at him with concerned eyes.

“That’s a heavy price, Jalen,” she said in a soft voice.

“It is...” Jalen responded nodding. “But Heidi, I can always find other work. Your dad won’t be able to completely kill my earning potential.

Heidi nodded slowly, still not entirely put at ease with his words.

“Then there’s you,” Jalen said, resuming his writing on the napkin. “There’s the financial threat in regard to your family’s support.”

Heidi let out a shaky breath as Jalen continued writing on the napkin. When he finished, he turned it so she could read it.

Heidi Financial Threat -> Cut off completely from family accounts for tuition & resources-> Lose safety net overnight and ability to finish law school at Emory without significant debt

Heidi felt a cold shiver run down her spine as she finished reading what Jalen had written.

“Would you say that’s accurate?” Jalen asked her as she looked back up at him.

Heidi swallowed before nodding quickly. “Yes ... That’s accurate.”

Jalen nodded before turning the napkin back toward him and resumed writing.

After a few moments, Jalen turned the napkin back around. Heidi read carefully.

Jalen Social/Legal Threat -> Using his political leverage to discredit business or threaten legal action -> High-stress environment; forced isolation; a public scandal painting me as villain taking advantage of politician’s daughter; harder to find high-end clients in Atlanta

Heidi stared at the napkin, her heart pounding against her ribs. Seeing all of this written out in stark black and white made the danger terrifyingly real, but strangely, Jalen’s unbothered composure kept her from spiraling.

“He would absolutely fire you on the spot,” Heidi agreed, her voice tight. “He wouldn’t pay you another dime for the work you’ve already done, and he’d probably try to ruin your reputation with his country club friends. And as for me ... he would try to control the narrative. He’d probably try to force me to leave the state, hide the pregnancy, and give the baby up quietly to protect his political image.”

“And if you refuse?” Jalen asked.

“Then I’m dead to him,” she said, the harsh truth burning the back of her throat.
