Karla was prepared to present Megan’s divorce case against Chris Westward. She sat at her desk, meticulously reviewing every document one last time. She had spent weeks compiling evidence, cross-referencing legal precedents, and formulating a rock-solid strategy to dismantle Chris Westward in court.

Despite the personal complexities of her relationship with Jalen and Megan, Karla had maintained her professionalism and worked tirelessly to ensure Megan had the best possible chance of breaking free from her manipulative husband.

She had built her case on three primary pillars:

The first was infidelity. Megan had gathered irrefutable proof of Chris’s affairs, including hotel receipts, text messages, and even bank statements that showed he had been spending lavish amounts of money on other women.

The second was financial oppression. Chris had deliberately restricted Megan’s access to their shared funds, making her financially dependent on him despite the prenup ensuring she was entitled to a personal allowance.

The third and final was coercion & emotional abuse. Karla had evidence of Chris’s controlling behavior, including text messages where he belittled Megan, isolated her from friends, and manipulated her into thinking she couldn’t possibly leave him because of the nature of their prenup.

Now, with all of this in hand, Karla was ready to file the official divorce proceedings.

The following day, Karla arrived at her firm’s private conference room, where she had arranged a final strategy meeting with Megan. She found Megan and Jalen sitting at the long oak table.

Megan was nervously alternating between rubbing her wrist and fidgeting with the hem of her blouse. At nearly four months pregnant, Megan was beginning to show slightly, though she hid it well under a loose-fitting top.

Jalen sat beside her, his arm resting protectively along the back of her chair. Though Karla was fully invested in her role as Megan’s attorney, she couldn’t deny the strange duality of her own emotions. She and Megan were both carrying Jalen’s children, both deeply involved romantically with the same man, yet here she was, fighting for Megan’s freedom from another man entirely.

“I’ve got everything in place,” Karla said, setting down the thick file of documents in front of them. “We’re moving forward. Chris is going to get served tomorrow morning.”

Megan exhaled, relief flooding her features. “It’s really happening.”

“It is,” Karla confirmed. “And based on everything we’ve compiled, he’s going to lose. Badly.”

Jalen nodded approvingly. “What’s his best move? How do you think he’ll respond?”

Karla folded her arms, thinking. “Chris isn’t the type to just roll over and accept a loss. He’s going to fight this, but he doesn’t have much legal ground to stand on. If he tries to countersue, he’ll only be digging his own grave. The infidelity alone will destroy any credibility he has in front of a judge.”

Megan swallowed, her fingers trembling slightly. “I know he’s going to be pissed. He doesn’t like losing.”

“He’s already lost,” Karla reassured her. “We just need to make it official.”

Jalen, though emotionally invested, kept his focus practical. “What if he tries to intimidate her? Calls her, pressures her, or even gets his firm involved?”

Karla’s expression darkened. “If he does that, we hit back harder. We’ll get a restraining order if needed. Chris is powerful, but he won’t risk losing his entire legal career over this. He’ll try to make this go away as cleanly as possible.”

Megan looked at Karla, her voice quieter now. “And if he tries to take the baby from me?”

Karla’s eyes softened. “He has no claims to your baby, Megan. He isn’t the father, so there’s nothing he can do to take the baby away. Plus, all he really wants is to control you, but the second it becomes clear he can’t do that anymore, I’m certain he’ll back off.”

Megan let out a shaky breath. “Okay. I trust you.”

Jalen wrapped an arm around Megan’s shoulders, his voice low but firm. “You’re not alone in this.”

Karla looked at them both and nodded. “No, you’re not. Tomorrow, this starts, and by the time we’re done, Chris Westward will have no choice but to let you go on your terms.”

Jalen pulled Megan into a tight embrace, rubbing slow, soothing circles on her back as she leaned into him. He knew how emotionally draining this process had been for her, and he wanted her to feel safe and reassured before he left.

“You’re stronger than you realize,” he murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “I’m proud of you for standing up for yourself, Megan. You’re doing the right thing.”

Megan let out a small, shaky breath as she clung to him. “It just feels overwhelming sometimes,” she admitted. “Even with everything Chris did, part of me still feels guilty for tearing everything apart.”

Jalen tilted her chin up, looking deep into her eyes. “He did that, Megan. Not you. He put you in this situation, not the other way around.” He stroked her cheek, his voice soft but firm. “You’re just taking back control, and again, you’re not alone in this.”

Megan swallowed hard, nodding as her grip on him tightened briefly. “Thank you,” she whispered.

Jalen responded by pulling her into a slow, tender kiss, his lips lingering on hers as he tried to pour every ounce of reassurance into her. When he pulled away, he rested his forehead against hers for a moment before finally letting her go.

He turned to Karla, who had been watching with quiet understanding. He walked over to her, placing his hands on her hips before leaning in to kiss her softly. “I appreciate you,” he said against her lips, his tone filled with sincerity. “Thank you for everything you’re doing for her.”

Karla smiled slightly, running her fingers up his arm. “Just doing my job,” she teased, though there was warmth in her eyes.

Jalen kissed her again, this time lingering just a little longer, before stepping back. “I’ll check in with you both later,” he promised before heading toward the door.
