Chrysti didn’t see Jalen over the next week, but they’d been texting each other quite a bit.
One evening, after a long day, Chrysti was lying on her couch in leggings and an oversized hoodie, scrolling through her phone.
She came across a meme about men dodging responsibility, and without thinking, she sent it to Jalen with a laughing emoji.
Jalen responded almost immediately.
Jalen: “Damn, you got me. Gotta go abandon my six baby mamas real quick.”
Chrysti snorted, shaking her head. She typed back.
Chrysti: “At least you own it. Growth!”
Jalen replied with a GIF of a guy dramatically bowing. Then writes:
Jalen: “Character development.”
Chrysti laughed to herself. She really hadn’t expected this. After their conversation at the coffee shop, she figured she’d be done with him, but instead, she found herself enjoying these exchanges.
Jalen was fun. He could take a joke, and he didn’t try to smooth-talk his way into anything. He was just himself.
She exhaled, staring at their text thread for a moment. Before she could overthink it, she typed another message.
Chrysti: “Hey. What are you doing tomorrow?”
She hesitated only for a second before pressing send. Jalen’s response came back after a minute.
Jalen: “Why? You trying to see me?”
Chrysti rolled her eyes.
Chrysti: “Wow. Look at the ego on you. I was just gonna ask if you wanted to do something.”
Jalen sent a thinking emoji. Then responded with:
Jalen: “Okay, okay. What do you have in mind?”
Chrysti thought for a second before smiling to herself.
Chrysti: “Ever done an escape room?”
There was a slight pause before Jalen responded.
Jalen: “You trying to see if I panic under pressure?”
Chrysti: “Obviously. “Need to know if you’re going to fold in a crisis.”
Jalen: “Fine. But if we get locked in there forever, I’m blaming you.”
Chrysti grinned.
Chrysti: “Deal. Pick me up at 6.”
She put her phone down and exhaled. She was excited to see Jalen again. It was a feeling that was a little terrifying.
Jalen wasn’t exactly sure how this had happened, but here he was standing next to Chrysti Oliveira outside Breakout Atlanta, an escape room venue in Buckhead.
This wasn’t a date. At least, that’s what Chrysti had insisted.
“Just something fun,” she had said when he had arrived to meet her. “Something competitive, and something that lets me prove I’m smarter than you.”
Jalen had laughed at that. “You’re already assuming you’ll win? That’s cute.”
Now, standing in front of the venue, he could tell she had put some effort into her athletic appearance. Her outfit was stylish and form-fitting, featuring black high-waisted leggings and a beige cropped long-sleeved top revealing a sliver of toned abs, and Nike sneakers.
Her long brown hair was styled effortlessly down, and her signature confidence radiated in her posture.
She wasn’t trying to impress him, but she was definitely impressive.
“You sure you can handle this?” Chrysti teased, tilting her head at him.
Jalen smiled. “You’re the one who’s gonna crack under pressure.”
The game they chose was called “The Heist.”
They had one hour to break into a vault, steal a priceless artifact, and escape before security caught them.
“So, we’re criminals?” Jalen asked as they were led inside the dimly lit room.
“Think of it more like Ocean’s Eleven,” Chrysti said. “Only I’m the mastermind, and you’re the distraction.”
Jalen chuckled. “Right. So, I just stand here looking pretty?”
Chrysti smiled. “Pretty much.”
The timer started. 60 minutes. Immediately, Chrysti went into full problem-solving mode. She examined the locked vault door while Jalen searched through filing cabinets, looking for clues.
“It says we need to find a six-digit code to open the first lock,” Jalen noted. “There’s gotta be a clue in these papers.”
Chrysti scanned the room, muttering to herself. “Numbers, numbers ... where would they hide numbers?”
Then she saw it. A framed certificate hanging on the wall.
“The year on this diploma is 1974,” she said. “Try that.”
Jalen punched it in. Access denied.
“Tough break, genius,” Jalen teased.
Chrysti shot him a glare. “Oh, shut up.”
After ten more minutes of searching, Jalen finally found a hidden sticky note inside a desk drawer. It had a date circled: 09/23/15.
“Try this,” he said.
Chrysti entered the code. The lock clicked open.
She turned to Jalen, grinning. “Okay, I’ll admit it. That was solid.”
Jalen smiled. “You mean I just saved us? You’re welcome.”
Forty-five minutes left now. The second phase involved a laser security system.
“Alright, let’s see how flexible you are,” Chrysti said, looking at the thin red laser beams crisscrossing the room. “Think you can get through?”
Jalen cracked his neck. “Let’s find out.”
Chrysti stood back and watched as Jalen maneuvered through the lasers with surprising ease. His broad shoulders barely cleared some of the tighter gaps, and Chrysti found herself admiring the way his muscles flexed as he moved.
She immediately shook that thought away.
Not. A. Date, she reminded herself.
Jalen reached the keypad on the other side and entered the code they had found. The lasers shut off.
“Not bad, huh?” he said as he walked back toward her.
Chrysti folded her arms, but there was an undeniable glint of impressed amusement in her eyes. “I mean, for a guy with six baby mamas ... yeah, that was alright.”
Jalen laughed. “You’re never letting that go, are you?”
“Absolutely not.”
Twenty minutes left. They had reached the final stage: the vault itself. Chrysti examined the safe while Jalen searched through a stack of old blueprints.
“Wait,” Jalen said. “There’s a sequence here ... it looks like a pattern.”
He pointed at a set of numbers scrawled in faded ink.
Chrysti studied it. Then her face lit up. “It’s a Fibonacci sequence!”
Jalen raised an eyebrow. “You just pulled that out of nowhere?”
Chrysti shrugged. “I told you I’m smarter than you.”
She entered the code into the safe. The vault door swung open.
“Boom.” Chrysti grinned. “We win.”
Final Time: 42 Minutes and 17 Seconds. As they exited the escape room, the employee at the front desk was impressed.
“That’s one of the fastest times we’ve seen today,” he said.
Chrysti smiled. “Told you we’re good.”
Jalen chuckled. “Yeah, yeah. Don’t get a big head.”
They stepped outside, the cool night air hitting them.
Chrysti glanced at Jalen. “Alright, that was actually fun.”
Jalen smiled. “You sound surprised.”
She rolled her eyes. “I just mean ... I had a good time.”
Jalen nodded, watching her for a moment. “Yeah. Me too.”
For a second, there was a pause, something hanging in the air between them.
Chrysti quickly looked away. “Okay, I’m starving. Wanna grab food?”
Jalen grinned. “That depends. Are we calling this a date yet?”
Chrysti scoffed. “In your dreams, Moss.”
As they walked toward their cars though, Jalen could tell she wasn’t totally against the idea.
That following Friday, Megan and Karla sat across from each other in Karla’s office, a thick file of documents between them. The atmosphere was different from when they first met.
It was less professional and more layered with unspoken understanding. They both recognized the shift. They weren’t just attorney and client anymore. They weren’t even just allies. They were something else entirely now.
Megan folded her arms, tilting her head. “I gotta say, I wasn’t expecting this when I first met you.”
Karla let out a small chuckle. “Neither was I, but here we are.”
Megan exhaled, shaking her head with a smile. “So ... how are you holding up? With Jalen, the baby, and everything?”
Karla leaned back in her chair, her perfectly manicured fingers drumming lightly against the desk. “Honestly? It’s insane, but at the same time, I don’t regret it.”
Megan studied her, then nodded. “Yeah. That’s exactly how I feel.”
“My cravings have been insane,” Karla said shaking her head.
“Who are you telling?!” Megan replied animatedly. “The other day I found myself dipping bananas in ranch!”
“That actually sounds tame,” Karla said laughing. “The other day, I was drinking pickle juice.”
They both had a laugh as they spent more time comparing more notes on bizarre snacks they’ve had.
A moment later, Megan looked at Karla more directly. “What did you think of the others?”
“The other women?”
“Yeah.”
Karla sat back processing for a second before answering. “First thing I noticed was that they all seemed to be very formidable in their own way. They all left their mark in that meeting. Rachel was as feisty as I thought she’d be, but still reasonable. Sydney was really sweet but asserted herself when she needed to. Heidi was way more mature than I thought she’d be, and Kristen seemed comfortable taking the lead, which I respected.
Megan nodded, smiling. “I guess that’s Jalen’s type. I was impressed with all of them, honestly. Kristen’s a high-ranking nonprofit professional, Heidi’s in law school, Rachel’s an up-and-coming reporter, and Sydney’s a marketing director. Those are women who can hold their own.”
“Strong independent women who all fell for the same man,” Karla said, chuckling.
“Including us,” Megan reminded her.
Karla smiled. “Yeah ... including us.”
There was a brief silence for Karla spoke up again.
“Be honest with me. Woman to woman,” she said leaning forward. “Has any part of this made you feel jealous of the others or possessive of Jalen?”
