In the morning, Jalen went out and got breakfast from Chick-fil-A and brought it back to Kristen’s apartment before she woke up.

She stretched as she woke, the smell of food hitting her before she even fully opened her eyes. She turned over to see Jalen setting down a Chick-fil-A bag and two cups of orange juice on her nightstand.

“You got breakfast?” she asked, her voice still groggy from sleep.

“Figured you’d need something in your stomach after the kind of day you had yesterday,” Jalen said with a small smile, sitting down on the edge of the bed.

Kristen sat up, running a hand through her messy hair. “You didn’t have to do that, but ... thank you,” she said sincerely.

Jalen handed her a bag, and she pulled out a chicken biscuit, taking a slow bite as she let herself wake up. Jalen watched her, his mind still heavy with the weight of what he needed to tell her, but for now, he pushed it aside.

“I wanted to ask you something,” he said after a moment, taking a sip of his drink.

Kristen raised an eyebrow, still chewing. “Yeah?”

Jalen leaned back slightly against the headboard, his expression thoughtful.

“Tell me about the end with Rob. How did you get to the point where you finally decided you were done?”

Kristen exhaled, setting her biscuit down on the wrapper.

“It wasn’t one thing. It was a lot of little things that added up over time,” she admitted. She shifted, pulling her knees up to her chest as she thought.

“At first, I made excuses for him. Told myself he was just stressed, that his job was demanding, that things would get better once he settled in, but months turned into years, and I realized ... I was waiting for a version of him that didn’t exist. I kept hoping he’d wake up one day and start treating me like I mattered more than his career, but he never did.”

Jalen nodded, letting her talk, not interrupting.

“I started feeling like I was just a placeholder in his life. Like I was supposed to wait in the background, supporting him while he got everything he wanted, and the more I tried to bring it up, the more he made me feel like I was the problem for wanting more.”

She looked down at her lap. “And maybe I started believing that for a while. That I was asking for too much. That I should just be patient and let him focus on his goals.”

Jalen studied her quietly. “What changed?”

Kristen sighed. “You.”

Jalen’s brows lifted slightly. “Me?”

Kristen nodded. “Not just you, but ... the way you made me feel. From the moment I met you, I felt seen in a way that I hadn’t in years, and it wasn’t just about attraction or sex. It was the way you listened. The way you took me seriously. The way you made me feel like I deserved to be appreciated.”

She paused, looking at him directly. “That’s when I knew. That if a man I barely knew could make me feel more valued in a matter of weeks than the man I was engaged to had in years ... then I was in the wrong relationship. It just ... took me a little longer than I thought it would to actually work up the nerve to leave.”

Jalen swallowed, feeling the weight of her words.

Kristen glanced down. “Leaving was still hard. He tried to guilt-trip me, make me feel like I was abandoning him, and I won’t lie, there was a part of me that almost caved, but then I realized, if I stayed, it wouldn’t be for love. It would be because I was afraid to be alone, and that wasn’t a good enough reason.”

Jalen let out a slow breath, nodding. “I respect you for that. I’m proud of you. For knowing your worth and walking away.”

Kristen smiled faintly, but then her expression grew softer. “Why do I feel like you asked me that for a reason?”

Jalen tensed slightly, gripping his cup a little tighter. He was just about to unload, but then Kristen leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder.

“Whatever it is, you can tell me,” she said quietly.

Jalen exhaled, staring at the ceiling. That little comment unnerved him.

Jalen took a deep breath, shifting slightly so he could look at Kristen more directly. He reached for her hand, squeezing it gently.

“Kristen,” he started, his voice steady but sincere, “I want you to know that no matter what happens, no matter what you need, I’m going to be here every step of the way. Through this pregnancy and raising our child. You won’t have to do this alone.”

Kristen’s lips parted slightly, her eyes clearly searching his eyes for any sign of hesitation.

“Are you sure you’re ready for all of that?” she asked softly, her voice carrying a vulnerability that she rarely let show.

Jalen nodded without hesitation. “I am.”

Kristen swallowed. Her fingers tightened around his. “That means everything,” she whispered.

Jalen tilted his head slightly, studying her expression. “I know this isn’t how you pictured your life going right now, and I know you’re still processing all of it, but whatever you decide, however you need me, I’m in this with you. One hundred percent.”

Kristen exhaled, her shoulders relaxing just a little. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, Jalen. I wasn’t expecting this, and I feel so ... lost, but knowing you’re here? It helps.”

Jalen gave her hand another squeeze. “Good, because I’m not going anywhere.”

Kristen let out a soft laugh, though there’s still emotion thick in her voice. “Guess we’re in this together now, huh?”

Jalen smiled softly. “Looks like it.”

Kristen leaned into him again, letting the warmth of his presence settle the storm inside of her.

Unfortunately, this comfort would be short-lived. Jalen took another deep breath.

“Kristen ... I have something very important that I need to tell you, and ... it won’t be easy for me to say or for you to hear.”

Kristen put her chicken biscuit down and looked at him intently. “What is it?” she asked nervously.

Jalen sighed. “Kristen, there are other women. Three of them.”

Kristen looked dumbfounded. “What?”

Jalen took a deep breath and began his story. He started by telling Kristen about Sydney Swanson and how they met at a party before he had met Kristen and how he and Sydney had a passionate night together that same night.

“Sydney and I have still been seeing each other, even though it’s not a relationship,” he explained. “Last week, she told me she’s pregnant with my child.”

Kristen’s mouth was slightly open now in utter disbelief. “Are you serious?”

Jalen nodded. “Yes, and then there are the other two.”

He went on to tell her about what transpired after finishing the project at Wellness Georgia. He told her how he met Megan Westward at his next project, which Jim Harbor referred him to.

Jalen then told Kristen about everything that happened with Megan, including the affair and how she had just escaped from her husband.

“And now ... there’s a possibility that she may be pregnant too, although that’s not confirmed yet,” he said.

Kristen blinked several times. “Jalen ... What the fuck?”

“Just ... let me finish,” he said as softly as he could.

Finally, he told her everything about Rachel DeSantos, including how they also had a sexual encounter at the gym after their one-on-one basketball game not long ago.

Jalen finished by saying, “All of this doesn’t change how I feel about you, Kristen, nor does it change my commitment to being here for you and the baby. But I care about the others too. And I will also be there for them.”

Kristen sat in stunned silence, her food forgotten and her fingers gripping the edge of the bed as she processed everything Jalen just told her.

Her mind raced, clearly trying to piece together the timeline, the implications, and the sheer weight of it all.

Jalen watched her carefully, his expression unreadable but his body tense.

Kristen finally exhaled, pushing her breakfast aside and rubbing her temples.

“So let me get this straight,” she said slowly, her voice steadier than she expected, “You and Sydney had already met and slept together before you met me. She’s pregnant with your child. Then, after I said we needed space, you met Megan, had a whole affair with her while she was still married, helped her escape her husband, and now there’s a chance she’s pregnant too. Then, on top of all that, you had ... an encounter with this Rachel girl? Just recently?”

Jalen swallowed, nodding. “Yeah. That’s ... pretty much the gist of it.”

Kristen let out a breathy, humorless laugh. “Jesus Christ, Jalen.”

He didn’t respond.

Kristen shook her head, eyes fixed on a random spot on the wall.

“And you’re saying that none of this changes how you feel about me? That you’re still going to be there for me and the baby?”

Jalen leaned forward, his voice low and firm.

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. I meant what I said, Kristen. I’m in this with you. Just like I’m in it with them. I care about all of you.”

Kristen let out another breath, but this time, it shook slightly.

“I don’t even know what to say to that. I mean, I knew this wasn’t exclusive. I knew that, but I didn’t expect...”

She trailed off, rubbing her hands over her face. Jalen stayed quiet. He didn’t push.

Finally, Kristen looked up at him, her eyes sharp.

“What exactly are you expecting from me here, Jalen? Am I supposed to just ... accept this? Be okay with the fact that you’re about to have multiple kids with multiple women, and I’m just one of them?”

Jalen met her gaze. “I’m not expecting anything from you, Kristen. I’m telling you the truth because you deserve to know, and whatever you decide ... however you feel ... I’ll respect that.”

Kristen held his stare for a long moment, searching for something in his face. Finally, she exhaled sharply, standing up from the bed and pacing across the room.

“This is insane,” she muttered, “This whole situation is just ... insane.”

Jalen didn’t argue.

Kristen turned back to him, arms crossed tightly over her chest. “I need time to think.”

Jalen nodded. “I get that.”
