Money never sticks to a sucker. Everybody knows that. Omar, made happy by the one thousand he had “earned,” decided to multiply it by playing cards with his friends from the market. Want to hear something funny? Omar not only lost all one thousand -- he went into the red too, and ended up owing that much again. You cannot imagine how upset he was when his friends left him with nothing! And they laughed, laughed, laughed ... the ringing of their laughter stayed with Omar even when he returned to 6 Maple Court. Annette, coming toward him, noticed it.
“Did something happen, Omar?” she asked with maternal concern.
He only waved a hand in disappointment.
Annette stopped him.
“Wait. Stop waving it off. Tell me what happened.”
“Nothing, daughter. My friends from the market ... they are not very good people.”
Compassion appeared on Annette’s face.
“From what I’ve seen, they treat you badly. They’re bad people. You’d be better off not dealing with them.”
She spoke to the man who fucks her and who made her into a natural whore as a caring mother would speak to a child. And Omar did give that impression -- a helpless child.
“But they’re my friends. How can I not deal with them...”
“All right,” Annette said sternly. “I’ll speak to them. And that’s not up for discussion. My husband and I were going to the market tomorrow anyway. I’ll stop by and remind them of their place.”
