“Hey Siri, call Amy,” I said as I drove to her university. It was a two hour drive and I thought lunch might be a good time to meet up. I wasn’t sure of her schedule, but I doubted that her entire day would be filled with classes.
“Hi Dad! What’s up?” Amy said brightly when answering.
“Hi Amy! How’s my favorite daughter? I’ll be driving by the university today and thought that I could take you out to lunch so you can have something other than your normal gourmet food service.”
I heard a gurgle of laughter, “Well, I think that I can skip my normal lunch if my favorite Dad is in town! What time were you thinking? I’m free from 11:00 to 2:00, so any time between then is fine with me.”
I thought for a minute, “How about I give you a call when I get in? It will be around 11:30, so we can take a long lunch.”
“Sure Dad, that would be great. I’ll be back at the apartment by then so just drive there to park. See you soon!” Amy said.
“Bye Honey!” I replied.
I glanced at the time as I drove and considered what to do about work. My first impulse was to simply quit. I had no need to continue working because I was so well off from the sale of my company. I had stayed after the buyout because I thoroughly enjoyed the work and was given complete autonomy. Thomas Kane was my nominal boss, the site lead, and I ‘reported’ to him, but practically this was because everyone had to have a line manager. I took no active project direction from him, but rather the head office. Essentially, he was like a chief operating officer, but since our office did purely technical development, everyone reported to me other than support staff like IT, the office manager, reception, and HR. And HR had its own line management to avoid internal conflicts and to ensure that it acted as a fair and balanced entity when conflicts arose. And this was definitely a conflict.
“Hey Siri, call Janet Kaufmann.”
“Hi Jack, how’s it going,” said Janet. I had a great relationship with Janet and great respect for her. She had been with the company for several years, was incredibly ethical, and always tried to do the right thing.
“I have something serious to discuss Janet, so I will get right to it. I will be sending in my resignation to the company in a few hours, effective immediately, and won’t be coming in to work.” I spoke this slowly with great precision because I wanted to send the message that I was completely serious.
After a pause, Janet responded slowly, “Jack, this is incredibly sudden, so I can only imagine that something dramatic has happened for you to do this. If it’s a personal medical condition, I understand and you can say so with no further details, but if something from within the company has triggered this, then I can assure you of my complete discretion if you can share what has happened.”
I had to give credit to Janet, she picked up on these things very quickly and responded with precisely the right tone. I considered how to answer for a moment and the decided to be honest. Janet was always true to her word and she would protect a confidence even if it jeopardized her job.
“Janet, I’m going to take you at your word and request that you convey the reason to no one. The reason is simple: Thomas Kane is having an affair with my wife.” My tone was direct, unemotional, but I have no doubt that Janet could pick up the undertone of anger in my voice.
I heard silence for almost thirty seconds. I didn’t say anything, knowing this was Janet’s style - to think before speaking. Her cautious first words gave me a sense of her dilemma.
“Jack - this is so unusual of a situation that I need to look into it. You know that fraternization among employees is allowed, as long as HR is informed, but I actually don’t know what it means in this case because your wife is not an employee. However, you know of our personal leave policy and you can take two weeks of leave for personal problems with no questions asked. This certainly covers the situation. Rather than resign immediately, can I request that you take your two weeks while I investigate? I just don’t know what to say yet and need to explore options. Are you OK with this? Just take your two weeks and in the meantime I will explore the issue.
I had to think through this for a bit. Our company had gone through a progressive benefits phase driven by HR a couple of years ago, and I had the ability to take personal leave for serious problems - no questions asked for up to two weeks. After that you could take all of your normal vacation time and then unpaid leave, again no questions asked. It was policy to call up and make the request, of course, but it was automatically granted when using the phrase “serious personal problems”. Of course, I could simply quit and was seriously considering doing so.
“Janet, I’ll tell you what. I am taking the two weeks leave for serious personal problems. If you get back to me within the week with a proposal, I will consider staying on, but there is no world where I stay in the company as long as Thomas Kane is there. I suspect there is nothing you can do within this time frame, but please go for it. I will be available on this number and just message for a proposed time to discuss.”
There was surprisingly little traffic, so it was just past 11:30 when I rolled into Foster Street in East Rock at my daughter’s apartment. It was a three story building of apartments that replaced an old factory. I purchased the apartment as soon as Amy made it into Yale last year and she shared it with a friend.
We met at a pizza place located about two blocks from Amy’s apartment. It was populated by students and, not surprisingly, the walls were plastered in flyers for local bands. Amy and I sat in a booth away from most of the crowd and she spent the first thirty minutes of our lunch talking about her classes, specifically about her music theory seminar. While I enjoyed her vibrant enthusiasm, it was paired with the fact that her interest in music might have a genetic link to her possible bio-Dad. I kept her engaged with a few of the standard Dad responses of, “That’s fascinating, honey” and “Tell me more about that.”
By the middle of lunch, the facade of the “surprise visit” was wearing thin. Amy stopped mid-sentence, her slice of pizza hovering inches from her mouth. Her eyes narrowed. “Dad, you’re acting kind of weird. Did you get fired or something? What’s going on?”
“I’m separating from your mother, Amy,” I said flatly.
Amy opened and closed her mouth several times before saying anything. Finally, she leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Separating? You guys don’t even fight. Why? Did something happen? Did she—” Amy’s eyes opened wide. She was a clever student, and she knew that I was normally steady and rarely took drastic action, so if I went to this extent, the cause would be from her mother.
“I would prefer not to go into the details in the pizza parlor. And while I did want to see you,” I said in a steady voice. “I also would like to get a paternity test.”
