Chapter 21

Amy and Craig had timed their arrival at the house so they would not have to face their mother alone. Rather than use their key, Amy rang the doorbell because she didn’t really feel like it was her home anymore.
“Amy! Craig! I am so glad you’re home!” exclaimed Claire as she opened the door to her two children.
Her face brightened at the sight of them, and for one fleeting second she seemed to expect an ordinary homecoming: embraces or perhaps questions about what they were up to at university. Then she saw their expressions and the warmth drained from her smile.
Amy raised both hands as Claire stepped forward, stopping her before she could reach for a hug. The gesture almost defensive. Claire halted, her arms dropping to her sides.
“Don’t,” Amy said.
Claire’s face crumpled, but Amy found that she could not summon any sympathy for her. She had spent the entire journey imagining this moment, and still she had not been prepared for how easily Claire’s expression could resemble that of an innocent woman. There was nothing innocent about what she had done.
Craig allowed Claire to put her arms around him, but his own remained rigid at his sides. He looked over her shoulder into the hallway, avoiding her eyes while she held him. After a moment, he gently removed himself from her grasp.
“Hello, Mom,” he said, his voice flat.
Claire opened her mouth, then closed it again. Then her face crumpled and she motioned them inside.
“Let’s go have a talk at the kitchen table.”
As they sat down, Claire took a deep breath, finally deciding that the best way forward was to come clean with the truth.
“My behavior to your father cannot be forgiven. He has left me and filed for divorce - and given what I have done, I feel grateful that is all he has done. I think he has probably told you what happened, but you need to hear it from me. Please know that your father is the best of men and he is treating me better than I deserve.”
Claire looked back and forth between them, tears in her eyes.
“I have had multiple affairs and hid them from your father. He knew about none of them until a few weeks ago. They started a few months after we married and I had on and off affairs with men ever since.”
Amy spoke up, ice in her voice. “I know one of those affairs produced me. I don’t have the words to describe how distraught Dad looked like when he asked me to get a paternity test. He was consoling me! He told me that there was never a doubt that I always was and always would be his daughter. The tests came back and I know that my Dad isn’t my bio-Dad. How could you Mom!” The last sentence hissed in anger.
Tears began streaming from Claire’s eyes at Amy’s disclosure. “Oh God, my actions seem to get worse every day. I’m so sorry that you had to find out like that. Amy, I never knew for sure who your father was and always hoped that it was Jack. What’s even worse, is that your sperm donor found out about you a couple of weeks ago and showed up at the house to try to blackmail me. He said he would tell you if I didn’t give him money. Amy, please, if he ever reaches out to you, have nothing to do with him. He has turned out to be a most horrible man.”
Amy’s expression didn’t soften, “Worried that he might tell me things that I don’t know about you, Mom? Are you just trying to keep me in the dark?”
Claire let out a half sob and half distraught laugh, “Amy, I think you have seen the worse of me, so there is nothing he will say that will surprise you. No, I’m worried about your physical safety if you meet him in person. If he reaches out to you and if you feel the need to talk with him, do it over the phone. His name is Luke Hathaway.”
Amy gave a careful nod at her mother’s concern, but made no commitment about what she might do.
Claire continued her confession. “The last affair started couple of years ago. It was similar to the others, but there was one aspect that made it particularly bad. The affair was with your father’s boss. I don’t know what made me do that - the lack of respect to your father is sickening.”
