The ink on the uncontested divorce papers was dry. There had been little to fight over. The house went to Claire and she received half of all remaining assets which was a considerable amount of money. The agreement included no support payments. The children were eighteen so there was no child support involved. With the signatures finalized, she was merely counting down the days, roughly three to four months of legal limbo, until the decree was absolute and she would be finally divorced from the man she had spent more than two decades gaslighting.
Claire was picking at a lukewarm dinner in the quiet of the dining room when a knock echoed through the house. She stepped to the foyer and peered through the viewer, seeing a man whose silhouette looked vaguely familiar, a blurred memory long since buried.
When she opened the door, the man stared at her, his eyes scanning her face with a searching intensity. “Claire?”
She nodded, looking at him curiously.
“I think you might remember me,” he said, his voice a gravelly rumble that sent a jolt of anxiety through her spine. “It’s Luke. Luke Hathaway. From Chicago?”
The name hit her like a physical blow. Claire staggered back, her mouth falling open in a silent gasp of disbelief. Before she could utter a word of refusal, Luke stepped past her into the hallway.
“What is it? What do you want?” Claire asked, her voice sounding fragile even to her own ears.
His expression was grim. “A few weeks ago, I sent in a sample to AncestryDNA. I was trying to find out more about my grandparents. To my surprise, there was a hit: a fifty percent DNA match. Both my parents are dead and I have no brothers or sisters, so logically, it could only be a child.” He paused, his gaze hardening. “That child had published a public family tree. It identified the age. I have a daughter, eighteen years old. There is only one person that could be, and that is a child between you and me.”
Claire collapsed backward against the wall, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle a sob or a scream. “No, no,” she whimpered, the carefully constructed facade of her life splintering yet again. “That’s impossible.”
“No, I think it is very possible,” he said, his voice devoid of warmth. “In fact, it is pretty definitive. I haven’t reached out to your ... our daughter. I thought it was best that I come here first.”
Claire tried to reclaim some semblance of authority, squaring her shoulders despite the tremor in her knees. “What do you even want, Luke? Why are you doing this?”
Luke’s gaze drifted past her, scanning the expensive furnishings in the house. A predatory smile touched his lips. “Well, to be blunt, Claire, I’m short on cash right now. Music doesn’t pay all that well. And given the look of this place, I’m reasonably certain you have plenty to spare.”
The audacity of the request shocked her. “You are delusional if you think I’m just handing you a check for showing up on my doorstep. I am not paying you a single cent!”
Luke let out a laugh that lacked any mirth. He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “I think you are. Because otherwise, I imagine your husband would be absolutely fascinated to learn that his wife wasn’t just unfaithful, but managed to gift him a child that isn’t his. I’m sure Jack would be thrilled to discover he’s been a cuck for eighteen years.”
Claire recoiled, but the panic subsided, replaced by a spike of defiance. “You’re too late for that kind of leverage, Luke,” she spat, her voice regaining a brittle edge of strength. “Jack and I are getting a divorce. The papers are signed. This revelation won’t make any difference to our relationship, so go ahead—tell him. Call him. Send him a certified letter. I don’t care.”
Luke blinked, his confident posture faltering for a fraction of a second. He hadn’t accounted for the collapse of the marriage, but the momentary lapse in his composure was quickly replaced by a quick pivot. He leaned in, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed her fragility.
“Is that so? Well, let’s talk about our daughter,” Luke said, his voice dropping into a cruel tone. “How is your relationship with her? Do you think she’d enjoy learning about the fuck-fests we used to have? The kind of hunger you had for me while you were playing the dutiful wife? I wonder if she’d find it touching that you couldn’t stay away from me even when you were supposedly trying to get pregnant with her.”
Claire began to shake her head with frantic motion. “No ... no,” she whispered, the words barely audible. The image of Amy’s face and the disgust she had already seen in her daughter’s eyes during her recent confrontation, flashed into her mind. To introduce the idea that her existence was the result of a lust driven affair would be catastrophic. It would incinerate whatever shred of respect the girl had left for her.
“You’re a monster,” Claire breathed, her voice trembling. “How could you even bring yourself to say that to me?”
“Think of this as payment due,” Luke said, his voice devoid of any paternal sentiment. “You have a daughter; I want some money.”
Claire continued to shake her head, her mind spinning as she tried to process what was happening. “How much do you want?” she asked, her voice a fragile.
Luke let his gaze wander, appraising the mahogany furniture and the silent luxury of the foyer. “A hundred thousand would be about right. Think of it as reverse child support,” he added with a harsh laugh.
“And if I give you the money ... you won’t tell Amy?” Claire asked hesitantly.
“Agreed. No telling the kid if you get me the money.” He stepped ominously closer, the space between them evaporating. “But I want another payment from you.”
He walked towards her, pinning her against the wall, tracing his finger along the line of her neck, descending toward the swell of her breasts.
“Do you remember how we were?” he murmured, his voice a low vibration. “How I’d pin you against the wall and fuck you until you shook and screamed? How I’d throw you onto the couch and take you from behind?”
Claire shook her head, a frantic “no,” but her physiology was a traitor. An unmistakable crimson flush climbed from her chest, blooming across her neck and staining her cheeks. The memory of that uncontrolled hunger was an echo that still resonated within her body.
“I can tell I still excite you,” Luke whispered, his eyes darkening. “My cock is just as big as it ever was. Your cuck of a husband could never get you going, could he? You needed me to actually get off.” He lunged forward, one hand seizing her breast with a bruising grip while the other slammed her shoulder against the wall, and then silencing her with a demanding kiss.
Her mind screamed in protest, but her body arched into him with a traitorous hunger. It was a dormant lust, a long ago memory of skin on skin now rising in her like a tidal wave. One of her legs instinctively hooked around his, pulling him flush against her in a desperate bid for proximity. A shuddering tremor raced through her thighs.
Luke broke the kiss, as an arrogant smile played on his lips, the look of a man who knew exactly which buttons to press to make a woman unravel. “I’ve still got it,” he murmured, his voice dripping with a cruelty, “and God, you still want it.”
Luke clamped his hand around her wrist in a grip that left no room for negotiation, and hauled her toward the living room, the momentum of his stride forcing her to stumble along. “No ... we can’t ... not here,” she kept protesting, her voice a thin thread of resistance. Her protests were hollow and her feet continued to follow his lead, drawn by a toxic attraction that she had long forgotten.
