Eden

The road to Eden on the A1 was a blur of Eucalypt forests and low mountains, beautiful, but it did get monotonous. Beside me, Elena had succumbed to the hypnotic hum of the highway, her head tilted back against the leather headrest, her breathing deep and rhythmic. I kept stealing glances at her, marveling at how she managed to remain breathtaking, her sex appeal coming through even in the most ordinary of clothes. She was dressed down for the drive, simple jeans and a plain T-shirt that hugged her curves, her face with minimal makeup. Even now, only two hours after a morning workout that had left us both breathless and tangled in the sheets of our motel room, I could feel a low-voltage current of excitement just by being in her orbit.

The silence of the cabin was fractured by the chime of Facetime. I glanced at the dashboard screen, and a familiar name flashed across the display. I tapped the accept button, Airplay routing the voice of my daughter through the car’s speakers.

“Hi Amy, how’s my favorite daughter?” I asked, a smile tugging at my lips and the teasing coming through my voice.

“Your favorite daughter wanted to find out how her favorite Dad was doing on his expedition to Las Vegas,” Amy replied, her voice dripping with a playful note that momentarily transported me back to the quiet suburbs of Connecticut. “And I just wanted to touch base and see how you were doing. You were really broken up when you left New Haven, Dad. I’ve been worried.”

“Well, as it turns out, I didn’t end up in Nevada; I’ve actually landed in Australia.”

“Australia!” Amy’s voice spiked, the teasing instantly replaced with surprise. “Australia? Like, the Australia? Wow, Dad ... you really didn’t just get away, you leapt off the map.”

“I did,” I admitted. “A colleague in Melbourne reached out and invited me to give a seminar. So I did. And once I was here, I decided to turn the trip into a long. overdue sabbatical. I’m taking a two-month holiday, driving up the coast to Sydney, and then heading further north to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef.”

“Two months,” she whispered, and I could almost see her leaning closer to the phone, her curiosity piqued. “That sounds amazing!”

“Dad,” Amy’s voice shifted, the playful sarcasm evaporating into a note of concern. “That’s a long time to be out there on your own. I mean, two months of hotel rooms? You were doing it tough when you left New Haven. Are you sure you feel well enough to travel alone?”

I felt a sudden lightness in my chest, the buoyancy that comes from holding a secret that is about to be shared. I let the word “well” stretch out, letting it linger in the air like a slow-release fuse. “Well,” I drawled, my voice carrying a confidence that I was only just beginning to recognize as my own, “the truth is, Amy, I’m not actually traveling alone.”

I glanced over to see that Elena’s eyes were open and she was listening with interest to see where this was going. She looked expectant.

“Wait, what?” Amy asked, her voice spiking. “Are you traveling with an old friend?” From her voice you could tell that she was trying to make sense of this.

“More like a new friend. Elena why don’t you introduce yourself,” I said with a grin which I am sure came through in my voice.

“Hi Amy, daughter of Jack, I’m Elena, friend of Jack.” Elena said with a playful voice.

“Um ... hi, Elena,” Amy replied, her voice trailing off into a cautious tone, the sound of a teenager trying to process an unknown variable in her world. “Have you ... have you known each other long?”

Elena’s giggle seemed to dance through the car’s speakers. She leaned toward the dashboard, her eyes catching mine with a mischievous glint. “No, not long at all,” she said, her voice honeyed and effortless. She gave me a wink. “We met a few days ago via some mutual colleagues. Your dad and I just hit it off right away. I had finished up my nursing degree and my own planned vacation had fallen through and Jack proposed that we travel together.”

“Wait, you just finished a nursing degree?” Amy’s voice shifted, the curiosity now laced with the protective concern of a college student realizing her father might be traveling with someone closer to her own age than his.
