The final chapter of The Side Project 1. I think we will probably do a sequel. Hard to tell sometimes if anyone is reading but it is fun to write. So the first part of this chapter deals extensively with another smut site I suspect most are familiar with. I originally planned to write an SOL-specific version, but as the idea marinated I realized - why bother? I don’t have the same gripes about SOL’s scoring system. I think it’s fair (even if I, of course, wish our score was higher). It allows images to be posted in the story. The admins are friendly and easy to work with. Honestly there’s nothing to complain about. So I left the story as is.
“One more glass?” Reed asked, holding up the most recent bottle of Viognier we’d just opened.
Taylor didn’t answer verbally. She just pushed her wine glass across the marble countertop of the kitchen island towards Reed.
The dinner party had gone well. I had gotten better acquainted with several more of Lauren’s friends from the neighborhood, most of whom I barely knew. The food had been excellent and the wine had flowed. Reed was a perfect gentleman, always ensuring the wine glasses were topped up and sharing funny anecdotes. Lauren’s “friend from her Little Rock days” - in town on business - had been quite a hit.
It was interesting watching him operate. He was polite and charming. Engaging without being overbearing. A part of me felt a tinge of jealousy. I realized I wasn’t some special case who brought him out of his shell - that was who he was. The extrovert who could play gentleman. Of course, I knew the truth beneath the facade: Reed was no gentleman.
We were down to just five of us now that most of the guests had said their goodbyes. Lauren had dropped out of queen-bee host mode a little bit and was wearily sipping a glass of wine now that all the leftovers had been put away and plates were in the dishwasher.
Cara had listened attentively to our concerns and funny anecdotes about our Alpha husbands all night, downing glass after glass of wine as if she could wash away her troubles that way. She’d mostly been quiet, though, a contrast to Lauren’s harsh belittling of our idiot husbands. I understood. Cara had very little money of her own and no real job experience. Her options, outside of continuing to live under her husband Cullen’s thumb, were limited.
Taylor was a woman I’d known in passing from the neighborhood but had never exchanged more than a few words with. I’d learned during the dinner party she was an absolute firecracker. No filter that I could discern and never afraid to share her opinion. It was a unique personality in a group where so much of the communication was really about what was left unsaid. I liked her a lot. Unlike almost every other woman in the neighborhood, with Taylor there were no games and no pretense.
“Ok, I got one more for you guys before I need to walk over to collect Kacie from Riley’s house and get home,” Taylor said. As I’d learned that evening, Kacie was Taylor’s four-year-old daughter. Riley was the neighbor watching her for the evening.
“So, a couple weeks ago, it’s a Friday night. I do Kacie’s bedtime routine, and for once she actually goes to sleep without it taking forever. So it’s like 8:30, and I’m thinking I actually sort of have a Friday night, heck yeah!”
I didn’t have much desire to be a mom, a common side effect of being married to a pathetic asshole.
‘Now Reed putting a baby in me, you know that might not be so bad,’ I thought. Then instantly recoiled. Where had that thought come from? Yikes.
“So I go downstairs, thinking it’s time for at least some wine and some trash TV. I get a glass and go to see what Merritt’s up to,” Taylor explained. Merritt was her husband and very much an Alpha. “He’s on his computer and I see a familiar light blue color down the sides of his screen. So I’m thinking ‘Fuck yeah, maybe he’s getting himself in the mood reading a little smut. I can actually get some hard dick tonight.’”
“Wait, hold up, what do you mean?” I asked.
“Erm, do you not read smut?” Taylor asked, seemingly surprised.
“Uh, no. I like romance novels and stuff, I guess,” I said. I was sort of confused about what Taylor was talking about.
Taylor looked around the room, seemingly realizing she might have overstepped. Lauren decided to come to her rescue. “I read [redacted] too, girl. Porn’s fucking one-note. Erotica is the way to get in the mood,” she declared.
“Hell yeah!” Taylor said, holding up her hand for a high five. Lauren slapped it.
I glanced over at Cara. She looked like she wanted to melt into the floor with embarrassment. “I, urm, uh ... I think I should probably head home. I think I maybeee hadd a little too much wine,” she said. The dark-haired woman rose to her feet unsteadily.
“I think it’d be smart if someone walked you home, sweetie. Reed, would you be a gentleman?” Lauren requested.
“My pleasure. Come on Miss Cara, let’s get you home and comfy,” Reed said and put his arm out with his elbow crooked for Cara to hang on to. She took it gratefully and they headed for the front door.
“She ok?” Taylor asked.
“Yeah, probably. I think hearing us pretty openly mock the Alphas tonight and discuss how nasty they are just has her down in the feels since she’s so stuck with Cullen,” Lauren said.
“Maybe we could, like, figure out a way to help her,” I suggested. The revelation about Reed’s wealth from that afternoon was dancing around in my mind.
“Maybe ... I’ll have to think about it,” Lauren said. She was by far the best off of the three of us financially if you took our husbands out of the equation. I’d learned that Taylor only worked part time as a personal trainer.
“Ok, back to my story. So I catch Merritt on [redacted] and I’m thinking ‘Heck yeah, Kacie’s asleep, husband is in the mood, maybe it’s time for Momma to have a little fun.’ I was just in a workout top and leggings, so I strip down to my panties and tiptoe up behind him,” Taylor explained.
That was a fun image to picture. Taylor had the body to prove she was serious about fitness. She reminded me a bit of Lexi, but taller and more muscular.
“And I do the classic ‘Hey baby, you in the mood?’ whisper into his ear. Dumbass whips around and looks at me like I’ve lost my mind,” Taylor continued.
“You catch him reading something really dirty?” Lauren asked.
“Even worse, he goes ‘What? No, that’s not what I use this site for. I’m patrolling it for morally degenerate content like drug use, cheating, nontraditional relationships, and the most blasphemous of all - lesbian sex!’” Taylor said.
“Wait, what the fuck? He thinks he’s the fucking morality police of the internet?” I asked.
“Apparently. He’s very concerned about marriage being between one man and one woman,” Taylor explained.
“These fuckers with their weird ideologies,” Lauren said with disgust.
“Also, how fucking hypocritical is that? I don’t know about your husbands, but Garrison uses coke all the time,” I said.
“Oh god, the fucking coke dick is so frustrating,” Taylor said.
“For real. So what does this patrolling do? Does he report the stories?” Lauren asked.
“No, he searches by tags for anything he finds objectionable and then gives the story a one-star vote. And he follows a bunch of authors he doesn’t like, so I guess whenever he sees a new story from them he bombs it with a low vote,” Taylor explained.
“So he’s not even reading the stories? Just clicking to the end and voting?” Lauren asked.
“Yeah, he showed me his whole system. He was very proud of it,” Taylor said. “Claims it’s efficient.”
“Wait, so let me get this straight: you’re standing there in your underwear, trying to get laid and this idiot is ranting about curbing moral degeneracy on a smut site?” I asked, appalled.
“Yup. What a loser,” Taylor said.
“That’s so fucked up,” Lauren said. Taylor nodded in agreement. I didn’t fully understand how the site worked, but it sounded like what Merritt did was pretty rude.
We heard the front door open and Reed reentered the kitchen a moment later.
“Get Cara home ok?” Lauren asked.
“Yep. The cold fresh air helped her sober up a little bit,” Reed said. “You all look disgusted. Don’t tell me, did your husbands send you dick pics?”
“Taylor was telling us the rest of the story about catching Merritt surfing Lit. Do you know what that is?” Lauren asked.
“I do. I’m guessing his usage of [redacted] did not lead to the passionate lovemaking a woman like you so richly deserves?” he asked Taylor.
Taylor fanned herself theatrically. “Is he always like this?” she asked Lauren, since our cover story was that Reed was her friend from Little Rock.
“So it seems,” Lauren said, eyeing Reed with amusement.
“What? Can’t I just be a gentleman who compliments attractive ladies?” Reed asked.
Taylor laughed cutely. “I suppose that’s fine. Well, there’s one other thing I have to tell you, Lauren. It sounds like Tanner is in on it too. There are a couple of them that I guess coordinate things.”
“What’s this now?” Reed asked. Taylor summarized what Merritt and Tanner were doing. I saw his eyes darken with disgust.
“I can only imagine all the time and effort those authors put into writing and editing those stories, just for jerks like Merritt and Tanner to try to kill their scores because they object to something without even reading the whole story. Really fucked up,” Lauren said.
“Completely fucking vile. The lowest form of humanity,” Reed spat out. I’d never seen him react so negatively to anything.
“Well, that story seemed like the perfect end to our night of husband bashing! Thanks, Lauren, this was super fun. Allie, it was really cool getting to know you more. Let’s grab lunch or something this week. And nice to meet you, Reed. If you’re ever visiting Lauren again, let me know,” Taylor said. She stood and hugged each of us.
“Give little Kacie a kiss for me,” Lauren requested.
“Will do, night all!” Taylor said, then walked out.
“So Reed, little fired up about some internet points there,” I prodded. I was curious why another seemingly innocuous tale of our husbands being idiots had gotten such a strong reaction from him.
The man got a weird expression on his face, unsure about revealing something. I thought that was pretty ironic considering he’d told me all about his newfound millions that afternoon. He seemed to reach the same conclusion.
“So I actually have a few stories up on Lit, so yeah, I’ve been on the receiving end of the vote bombing a few times,” Reed said.
“Is it really all that big a deal?” I asked. I didn’t totally follow all this.
“I mean, yes and no. Like it is a lot of work to publish a good story, but I never did it trying to make money or anything. It was just a fun way to get my fantasies out there. But still, getting good scores feels good. It’s cool people appreciate your craft, ya know?” Reed said. This was really interesting. I’d had no idea this side of him existed.
“It makes sense, I definitely use the scores to find good stories to, you know, take care of things,” Lauren said. “You write anything I might know?”
“I wrote this serial called Tennis Girl. It’s about a guy who lusts after and eventually fucks his boss’s trophy wife,” Reed said.
“Sounds naughty, and fun,” Lauren said, grinning.
“It was just a fantasy - well one based on some hunches I had, but it wasn’t something I could pursue because of the potential professional consequences. At the time, anyway,” Reed said. His grin told me there was more to the story.
“No longer just a fantasy?” I asked.
“Well once I was able to leave that job, I decided to see if the signals I’d always thought I was picking up from his wife were real. And, well, fantasy manifested into reality. You gals would like her. She doesn’t take any shit, just like you two.”
“You are such a fucking dog,” I said, but couldn’t help but laugh. Reed was what he was. “Go get us a refill, you scoundrel.”
“Alright, well probably time for us to head out, then,” I said as I downed the last of my wine. The last half hour had been a little weird while we finished our final glasses of wine. We’d relocated to the living room to relax, but Lauren was uncharacteristically quiet, which created a bit of an odd dynamic. It was mostly Reed and I chatting, which to be honest included a lot of flirting, with occasional input from Lauren. I found myself drinking the lovely Viognier faster than I should have because I felt awkward.
“Um, are you sure?” Lauren asked. “Maybe we can open one more bottle?”
I wasn’t quite sure what to do. It was good wine, though. And it was Saturday night with no chance of having to worry about annoying Alpha husbands. And even if Lauren was quiet, I was enjoying getting to know Reed more and more.
“Fuck, sure. Reed, you know where the wine fridge is by now, right? Keep being a gentleman. You’re doing great,” I said.
Reed chuckled but nodded. “Any preference?”
“Dealer’s choice,” Lauren said. Reed nodded and went to get the booze.
“You doing alright, girl?” I asked. “You seem quiet.”
“I think so. I just think tonight was my breaking point,” Lauren said.
“How so?”
“I’ve had enough of trying to make this shit work. The emotional neglect, the sexual frustration, the belittling, the prioritizing his buddies over me. Oh, and the fucking wingspan thing. I’ve known I haven’t deserved it for a while, but I just kept hoping I could get Tanner to be more like he used to be,” Lauren said.
“Ermmm, you’re sure?” I mumbled. I wasn’t quite sure how to handle this sort of emotional outburst. I knew Lauren decently well, and we’d certainly gotten closer in the last day, but we weren’t lifelong friends.
“Um yeah, I think I am actually. Spending time with sane people tonight and sharing the stories of all the dumb shit they get into. Like the totality of the bullshit just kind of hit me. Then the one-star bombing is the straw that broke the camel’s back. It’s a minor thing in the grand scheme of things, but it’s also illustrative of everything he does to piss me off. What a horrendously inconsiderate and rude thing to do. Fuck him,” Lauren said.
“What are you going to, you know, do?” I asked. My mind was spinning through the logistics. I couldn’t help but put myself in Lauren’s shoes. It was far more appealing than I initially realized.
“I think I’ll wait until after the holidays to say anything, but then I’m going to move out and tell him we’re done,” Lauren said.
“Where will you go? I mean you’re welcome to stay with me, but I’m not sure you’d want to with Tanner and Garrison being such good buddies.”
“I’m not sure, I’ll use this time between now and new year’s to start getting that sorted out. I actually talked about this with Kyle and Lexi this morning while I was considering if I was ready to give up. I’ll probably try to rent a place near the station, where I can walk to work,” Lauren said.
I had to admit, I was a little jealous of Lauren’s independence that she could plan to just leave like that. But I also felt happy for my friend.
“I feel like this is totally the wrong thing to say, but congratulations,” I said, and giggled self-consciously.
Lauren laughed. “Probably not the typical reaction, but knowing what we know, I think it’s the right thing to say. So thank you.”
“We should celebrate!” I exclaimed. I was happy to have said the right thing to Lauren. “Do you have any Champagne?”
“I do, in the wine fridge,” Lauren said.
“I’ll be right back. Reed no longer has dealer’s choice on what we drink next!” A plan was already forming in my mind. A very, very naughty one. My favorite kind.
“Hold up!” I called to Reed as I entered the kitchen. He was about to plunge the corkscrew into a bottle of red.
“What’s up?” he asked.
“Change of plans. Any good Champagne available?” I asked.
“There is. I took the liberty of inventorying the wine before selecting a bottle,” Reed said. That explained why he’d been gone so long and was very on brand for him.
“Well then, pop the cork on the best bottle,” I instructed.
Reed raised his eyebrow but didn’t protest. He pulled an expensive looking bottle from the fridge, undid the cage and popped the cork. I got three flutes from the cabinet and he poured expertly.
“Would you care to share the occasion?” Reed asked lightly. I sensed he was pleased by this pivot, perhaps a bit amused.
“Lauren’s decided she’s going to ask Tanner for a divorce. Don’t you think that’s occasion for celebration?” I replied.
“I suppose it is. Well then, shall we?”
“Mmmm, before we do, there’s something you need to know. You’re going to fuck Lauren tonight,” I told Reed.
“Whoa, hold up. What do you mean?” Reed protested.
“You heard me. She needs positive reinforcement that she’s making a good decision. You’re going to give it to her by showing her what she’s missing with that clown. You haven’t forgotten how to please a lady in the last twelve hours, have you?” I challenged.
“Of course not. But, I mean, what about what we talked about earlier? And what if Lauren’s a shitty lay?”
