A Whole New Game: The Side Project

Reed and I celebrated our tennis victories over dinner on Friday night at one of the best steakhouses in Houston. Normally I would have insisted it was too fancy since Reed was footing the bill to pay off our friendly wager from the previous Sunday. However, I was riding high between our tennis conquests and knocking out the work project that had kept me at the office late for much of the week. He had all that corporate attorney money anyway.

Dinner was as good as advertised - fantastic filet mignon with fingerling potatoes and a Caesar salad. We polished off a couple bottles of high caliber red wine with our food. Afterwards, we were in no mood to call it a night, so we decamped to a nearby sports bar for a round of drinks. Or three.

“So what do you think of this shit with Natalie and Katrina?” Reed asked. We had just settled in at the bar and ordered cocktails.

“What do you mean? You had fun with Natalie last night. Katrina’s off limits because of work,” I said.

“Yeah, I mean not them specifically, it’s more ... clearly even though they’re around our age they still like to get around and have some fun. Even though Katrina is off limits for me, it got me thinking, I bet there’s more of them out there,” Reed said. I could tell he had been considering this for a few days.

“An addressable market, so to speak. A target demographic even?” I said, a little amused.

“Picking up girls at bars and off dating sites is fine and all, but it’s so time consuming and there’s so many games. If there was a way to tap into this market of women who never settled down but know what they want and don’t play games, like Natalie, or those who aren’t really getting what they need at home - like supposedly is going on with Katrina ... it’s interesting man,” Reed said.

“Maybe we need to go out into suburbia, we can go see if you can hit on women at like Applebee’s in Katy!” I joked.

“Fuck you, man, I have limits,” Reed said, laughing.

“It’s an interesting idea though, maybe it could be a little side project,” I said.

Reed laughed. “Did you mean to do that?”

“What?” I asked dumbly.

“A side project to find ... side pieces? It’s perfect,” he said.

“I did not mean to do that, but I like the name even more now,” I said.

“A worthy cause, no doubt. Order me another if the bartender comes by, gotta hit the baño.”

I was messing around on my phone while Reed was in the bathroom when I got the email that changed our lives forever. I had to click through a few things to verify it was true. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“You alright man?” Reed asked once he rejoined me at the bar. I’m sure I looked insane.

“Uh, yeah dude. More than alright. You remember when, as a joke, we gifted each other Bitcoin for Wendy and Tilly’s birthdays when we lived in Dallas?” I asked.
