I woke up with a start, disoriented. Someone was shaking my shoulder. I panicked. I was naked under the covers. It was still dark out. I rolled onto my back, hugging the duvet to my chest and trying to figure out what was going on.
It wasn’t Ky who had woken me, he was next to me and just as groggy as I was trying to figure out what was happening. To my surprise the culprit was Lauren. She was standing over us, grinning almost manically.
“What the fuck Lauren? It’s like fucking 5 AM. Also why are you in our room?” I was acutely aware neither Ky nor I had a stitch of clothing on, although we were under the covers.
“Let’s go watch them get ready for this op. I bet this shit is hilarious. It’ll be fun. You guys can go back to sleep in my guest room after or we can hit my favorite diner.”
I looked over at Ky. He was bleary eyed, I was probably the same. We’d gotten to sleep around midnight. Still, I couldn’t deny the intrigue of watching more LIMPs in action. It was the natural pot stirrer in me. Ky was cut from the same cloth. He was going through the same thought process.
“Ok fine. Uh, give us a minute? We didn’t exactly bother with pajamas,” Ky requested.
“YES! I’ll go make coffee!” Lauren exclaimed and scurried out of the room.
“Uh, we don’t drink coffee...” I trailed off. Lauren was already gone.
“Maybe it’s a good day to try coffee,” Ky suggested.
“Yeah fuck that, I’m going back to bed. Does the bedroom door have a lock?” I asked grumpily.
“Lexiiiii, come onnn, this could be seriously fun,” Ky said. He had the troublemaking look in his eyes that was hard to resist. His hand was tickling my side lightly.
“Yeah, maybe. Alright, we really doing this?” I asked, giving in to his enthusiasm.
“I mean, if it’s anything like last night this is going to be some funny shit,” Ky said.
“Better be, what fucking time is it anyway?” I growled.
Ky grabbed his phone. “5:08.”
“Jeez. That Lauren has some fucking gall waking up two people she barely knows this early,” I said.
“Well, we did kind of throw her in the deep end with Mock Trial last night. Particularly someone bringing up a certain risque topic,” Ky pointed out, recalling me taking the game into clear NSFW territory with my eskimo brothers topic. I hadn’t been thinking about it that deeply at the time, I really just wanted to get Reed.
“Yeah, fair. Alright let’s do this,” I said with a slightly whiny voice and we both crawled out of bed. We rotated through the bathroom, downed the cups of water we’d left on the bedside table and got dressed in the warmest clothes we had.
“I didn’t exactly pack for cold weather stakeouts,” Ky noted ruefully. He was wearing black track pants and his Blackhawks hoodie. I’d brought a fleece jacket, which I put on over the black thermal shirt I’d worn to the hockey game on Thursday, but my warmest options for pants were leggings. I considered wearing jeans over the leggings but that sounded too uncomfortable and like too much effort for this early in the morning.
Neither of us had anything warmer to wear on our feet than standard cotton socks and running shoes.
“What’s the temperature look like this morning?” I asked as I finished dressing.
Ky checked on his phone. “Forty one.”
“Fuck, we’re going to freeze our asses off. Lauren better have some fucking blankets or shit,” I said, grouchily.
“I’d imagine LIMPs like Tanner all fancy themselves outdoorsmen and they’ll have all kinds of gear,” Ky noted.
I nodded, collected my hair in a high ponytail and tied it with a hair tie. Ky offered his hand and we held hands as we descended the stairs to the kitchen. That intimacy still gave me a small thrill I felt like I didn’t totally understand, but couldn’t deny I liked.
The kitchen did smell delicious. Although I’d never been a coffee drinker, I’d always loved the rich smell of it. One of my roommates back in my Chicago days had been a bit of a coffee snob and did the whole thing with French press and grinding every morning. I’d always enjoyed waking up to an apartment filled with that rich smell.
“How do you take your coffee?” Lauren asked us once she noticed us.
“Uh, we don’t drink coffee,” Ky said.
“What, what the fuck do you drink in the morning?” Lauren asked, baffled.
“Waterrrr?” Ky replied, like that was obvious.
Lauren regarded us as if we might be extraterrestrials for a moment, then set about mixing a flurry of what I assumed was cream, milk and sugar into two travel mugs I presumed already contained coffee.
“You’ll get over yourselves and like these,” she said confidently and thrust a mug into each of our hands. “Now let’s go, I think they get up at six, so we need to hustle to be in position in time.”
We followed Lauren to her BMW SUV. I got in the back and settled into the soft, comfortable leather seat. My coffee went into the cupholder for now.
Ky had never been good at sleeping sitting up on planes or in cars. I had no such issues. Lauren had turned up the heat and by the time we hit the interstate I was blissfully asleep.
I awoke and was slightly disoriented, again. It took me a moment to remember I’d been shoehorned into riding out to suburbia by Lauren at an obscene hour. I felt cranky until I heard Lauren and Ky giggling like miscreant teenagers in the front seat. Clearly they’d been plotting while I was snoozing.
We were parked in what I presumed was Lauren’s garage. We got out and Lauren motioned us over to a large storage area jam-packed with outdoor gear.
“We need a ground tarp for sure, ideally a thick outdoor blanket over top of that,” Ky said. Apparently his latent boy scout skills were coming out.
“Good call,” Lauren said and began opening plastic totes with the relevant items.
“What are our sleeping bag options?” Ky asked.
“Well we have quite a few but I generally avoid anything Tanner’s taken camping or hunting on the assumption he jacks off in it and doesn’t bother to clean up,” Lauren said. I couldn’t help but laugh. If Allie’s disdain for her husband was subversive and sneaky, Lauren’s was bold and assertive. I had to admit I found it appealing.
“So that leaves us with a couple of these summer bags he’s never used and this normal bag,” Lauren said, pointing out the options.
“The summer bags aren’t ideal, but if we zip them together Lex and I can share. With our body heat we’ll probably be fine. Got any like balaclavas, gloves or stocking caps to keep our extremities warm?” Ky asked.
“Pfft, does an Alpha have a balaclava? I think they order that shit by the dozen.” Lauren rummaged through another tote and tossed olive drab microfiber ones to both me and Ky. “Fresh out of the package, never used.”
“Sounds like we’ve got what we need to not freeze our asses off,” Ky said.
“I should get you some warm socks,” Lauren said. I wasn’t sure if she noted Ky and I were just wearing basic athletic socks or if it was something they’d discussed while I was napping in the car. The blonde dashed inside the house. I was still sort of amazed by her energy this early in the morning, but then I remembered when she worked she’d already be nearly an hour into her telecast by this time of day.
Ky had appropriated a backpack from Lauren’s stash and was shoving various items inside for transport.
“Really in your element here, buddy,” I noted ruefully.
“Maybe a little boy scouts re-enactment going on, but mostly excited to see this shit,” Ky told me. “You really should try the coffee, that shit’ll get you fired up.”
Reluctantly I trudged back to Lauren’s vehicle, opened the rear door and grabbed my travel mug from where I’d forgotten about it in the cup holder. It was still warm. I took a sip. It was delicious. And warming. I took another sip.
“I have to admit that is better than expected,” I said.
“Right!? I don’t think I want to become a coffee drinker, but right now? Honestly fuck yeah,” Ky said enthusiastically. I noted he had his own mug propped on a shelf while he packed our equipment.
Lauren emerged a minute later bearing woolen socks. She’d also changed from the casual clothes she’d been wearing. She was now clad in an olive green fleece parka and what appeared to be knit bubblegum pink leggings.
“Nice camo,” Ky commented, noting the bright color of Lauren’s leggings.
“I figure my legs will be inside the sleeping bag so it doesn’t matter,” Lauren said. She tossed a pair of socks to both Ky and I. We dutifully kicked off our running shoes and pulled the thick garments on over our basic cotton socks. I had to admit I could feel the difference almost immediately. My feet were toasty.
“We ready to roll, boss lady?” Ky asked. He was being a bit sarcastic. Lauren cinched down a final strap on her own pack, then nodded.
Lauren’s house was actually even closer to the path we’d walked the previous evening than Allie’s. Since our main goal was to observe the antics in the parking lot, rather than the field behind the club, we set up only a few hundred feet into the woods. Similar to the previous evening, we picked our way through the trees, although this morning the pre-dawn light was enough we didn’t need a flashlight.
The ground was dewy and damp - I was thankful for the thick wool socks to keep my feet warm and dry. We began setting up with ten minutes to 6:00 AM, when we thought the Alphas might start to stir.
We picked a spot a few feet back from the treeline that offered a good view of the parking lot. The ground looked soft and was relatively flat. We spread out the ground tarp and laid out a thick blanket over it, as Ky had suggested. Ky and I set about zipping together the sleeping bags we’d packed. Lauren settled in beside us in her bag. We kicked off our shoes once our unconventional double sleeping bag was ready and crawled inside. It was cozy. I liked it.
Ky reached around and dragged the backpack he’d brought so it was at his side. He began passing out more items. Binoculars, gloves and balaclavas for each of us, and a bottle of water for Lauren. He set down a bottle for us to share as well. I’d consumed most of my coffee by that point and had to admit it was having an effect. I felt wired despite the early hour.
As I passed Lauren her items I noticed she was shivering despite being in a sleeping bag.
“What’s the matter, weather girl? You get the forecast wrong?” I asked. I was teasing a little. I thought it was fair payback for our unscheduled early wake up.
“I dunno, it’s weird, this bag isn’t doing half as much to keep me warm as I feel like it should,” Lauren said.
“Well fuck that, come join us in here. Toss that over top of us like a blanket. It’s nice and cozy and warm in here,” I said reflexively.
Lauren hesitated. I could tell she thought it was weird.
“Oh please, you see no problem with barging into our room to wake us up at Five AM, but cuddling and not freezing your ass off is a concern? Get over here,” I said.
Lauren saw the wisdom of my words and crawled out of her bag. She did as I had instructed and threw it over us as a sort of auxiliary blanket, then got in next to me. It was a tight fit, but nobody was remotely cold once Lauren began to warm up.
I had to admit I liked this. Snuggled in between Ky, basically my favorite person in the world, and this cute new girl who was showing an assertive streak I found quite alluring.
“So Lauren, I’m curious, what made Lex and I your targets for this pre-dawn adventure?” Ky asked. Pre-dawn was an apt description. The first rays of sunlight had just started to appear but it would be at least another half hour until we actually saw the sun.
“Well last night it was you two who convinced the group to go watch yell practice, so that was the main thing. Reed and Allie slipped away pretty soon after you did, then Brandi crashed out. I think she just hit a wall or something. Nothing against the rest of your friends, but y’all seemed like the logical choice to roust at an obscene hour,” Lauren explained.
“I suppose that’s fair,” I said. “Up early because of work?”
“Yeah, my body clock considers waking up at 5 AM sleeping in. Unfortunate reality of my profession,” Lauren confirmed. She glanced at her smartwatch. “5:58, should be almost showtime.”
I took my final sip of coffee and passed the empty travel mug to Ky, who dutifully shoved it into the backpack. There was a quiet stillness to the morning. I almost hoped the LIMPs would be a no show to preserve the peaceful morning.
On cue, right at 6 AM, a man emerged onto the second floor porch of the clubhouse with a bugle. He put the instrument to his lips and began playing Reveille. I just stared through the binoculars at the absurdity. Ky was the first to start laughing and within seconds all three of us were guffawing and shaking at the hilarity of a grown man playing a bugle at 6 AM to an empty parking lot.
There was a minute of silence and I briefly wondered if there was not going to be much to see. I should not have doubted. Kid Rock began blaring from some tinny speakers that had been jury-rigged to the porch railing of the clubhouse. A pair of LIMPs carrying large bluetooth speakers emerged from the clubhouse and placed them at opposite ends of the parking lot, making the music even louder.
The next LIMPs to emerge were a half dozen younger ones - I recognized one who had been trying to hit on me last night. They were all dressed in maroon t-shirts and grey cargo pants with boots. They began sprinting around the parking lot, and moving the dozens of haphazardly parked golf carts out of the way.
