When I woke up Thursday morning Lexi was still wrapped in my arms. That was pretty rare. We typically fell asleep cuddled together but moved around in our sleep and ended up only partially entangled when we woke up. Rose had rolled over on her back at some point in the night, but was still snoring softly next to us.
Lexi must have already been awake and noticed the change in my breathing. She squeezed my arm lightly to let me know she was up.
“Ready to get up?” I whispered into Lexi’s ear.
“Hold me for a few more minutes?” Lexi requested. I gave her a small squeeze to tell her that was fine and she sighed happily.
She started squirming after about five minutes, which I assumed was her signal she was ready to get moving. I carefully got out of bed, trying to avoid waking Rose. Lexi did likewise. It was a little after 9 AM. Late, but not terribly so, and we’d had a big day yesterday.
“How you feeling this morning?” I asked Lexi as we tiptoed to the bathroom to brush our teeth. There were quite a few ways she could answer that question.
“Eh ok, little hungover, glad we drank lots of water yesterday, could be a lot worse. Nothing a big breakfast won’t cure,” Lexi said.
“Let’s go out and get something ridiculous for breakfast,” I suggested, thinking we could catch up in depth later.
“I’m in, we can get something for Rose too,” Lexi said.
“Really the whole house, I imagine the other four are going to be in rough shape this morning with how hard they went last night. Although they might still be up,” I noted. Reed had been known to go all night on occasion when coke was involved.
“Ha, we can be the heroes, sounds good.”
We got dressed quietly in casual clothes, taking care not to wake Rose, who was still asleep. We had gotten her number the previous evening and Lexi texted her where we were going so she wouldn’t wake up and think we’d abandoned her.
The downstairs was quiet, but looked about like what you would expect after a night of wild partying. The coke was gone aside from a little residue on the counter. I could see at least two empty bottles of Champagne and a half full one of wine had been left on the kitchen island.
“Looks like their evening was fun too,” Lexi observed.
“Yeah, hair of the dog?” I offered Lexi, gesturing towards the half full bottle. I was mostly joking, but to my surprise Lexi grabbed the bottle.
“Fuck it, we’re on vacation, right?” she said and drank directly from the bottle. We took a few minutes to figure out where to get breakfast while Lexi sipped at the wine.
We settled on a taco joint that supposedly had awesome breakfast burritos and tacos according to reviews.
“Mmm before we get breakfast we should hit Target. All the other girls don’t have a change of clothes, we can grab them some clothes so they don’t have to make the walk of shame in what they wore last night,” Lexi suggested.
“Great call, we never want to risk a repeat of the sequins incident,” I noted.
Lexi laughed. Early in our friendship she had ended up at my place after a themed party and her only options to wear home the next morning were a flashy sequined cocktail dress or one of my oversized t-shirts. After that we started keeping at least one change of casual clothes at each other’s places.
I grabbed the keys for the rental car from where we had left them on the hook by the front door. Lexi surprised me by rummaging through the cabinets until she found a travel mug, and poured the rest of the wine into it.
“That’s a very Reed-style move,” I commented as we walked to the car.
“Eh, I’m celebrating,” Lexi said. “Oh speaking of Reed, we should text him where we are before he wakes up and gets $100 worth of fast food delivered.”
“Oh yeah, great point,” I said, and got in the driver’s seat. Lexi shot a text to Reed, then gave me the directions to the nearest store.
“So, last night ... happened,” I said carefully after a few minutes, bringing up the topic that had been on my mind all morning.
“Yeah, why do you think I’m celebrating?” Lexi asked.
“I mean it was pretty amazing,” I said.
“It was, but that’s not reason for celebration by itself. The reason is that now you know my big secret,” Lexi said.
“That you’re bi?” I asked.
“Yup.”
“I mean cool, I guess. I obviously don’t mind, I think my actions speak for themselves on that front, I just don’t get why you would think you needed to hide that from me,” I said. All the pieces about Lexi being interested in women had snapped into place last night, but her motive for hiding that from me was a mystery.
“You know, it’s a fair point, and something I knew you would ask about. I’ve been thinking about how to explain myself since I woke up. I guess I’ll just try to be honest - it kind of happened by accident. When we first started hooking up it didn’t seem super serious. And then we started spending more and more time together and suddenly we were sort of serious and it felt awkward I had not told you about this huge side of me,” Lexi explained.
“I guess that makes sense, I hope you know I would never have judged you,” I said.
“Oh it was never really about you, I knew you wouldn’t care. I just couldn’t figure out how to say ‘hey by the way I actually pretty much only hook up with other girls, not guys.’ Then last weekend happened and you trusted ME with something huge and I knew I had to put on my big girl panties and let you know, especially if we were talking about moving together. Then last night happened, and I figured show is better than tell in some ways.”
“Hell of a lot more fun too,” I said, grinning as I remembered some of the hot moments from the previous evening.
“Yeah, didn’t mind that part at all.” Lexi was grinning when I glanced at her.
“So really, no other guys?” I asked.
“Nope, I guess full confession time since we’re already here. I have limited experience with guys. You’re the first I’ve really enjoyed in the bedroom. I actually hadn’t been with a guy for like three years when I met you, but we just had such an easy friendship when we met and so much in common. When you asked me home that first night I figured maybe I’d changed and would like a guy more this time around. And, I mean you were there, it was fantastic. Turns out in addition to having a lot in common we had outrageous sexual chemistry.”
“And the rest is history,” I said, somewhat amazed at all this.
“Yep, exactly. I did try hooking up with another guy about a year ago. Hated it. I think for whatever reason you just have the right mix for me, but mostly I bat for the other team.”
“Huh, I’m honored I guess. I suppose I should not have assumed it was other guys,” I said.
“Eh, it was a logical assumption I was straight considering I was having sex with a guy - you - all the time.” Lexi scoffed a little.
“Ha, fair point. So is this why you kind of always shied away dating officially or acting too much like a couple?”
“Yes, exactly. I liked what we had but I was a little too scared to be cut off from women if we were exclusive.”
“I mean we could have discussed that, but what we had, or have I guess, works. It’s functionally an open relationship even if that’s not what we call it,” I pointed out.
“Yeah, you’re right. Maybe it wasn’t the most emotionally mature decision, but I was happy with the status quo, and you seemed happy too. I knew we would have to have this talk at some point. Did I plan to do it driving to a Target in Nashville while sipping wine on a Thursday morning? No, but hey life can be weird,” Lexi said, chuckling.
“Pfft, you can say that again.”
Lexi grabbed my hand as we walked into the store. That was a surprise. Lexi was not a hand holder. We never did it unless we were trying to stay connected in a crowd. I looked at her, eyebrow cocked with surprise.
“Well now you know why I was weird about commitment. Since you’re cool with it, maybe test driving some couple-type stuff could be fun. See how we like it. Not like anyone knows us,” Lexi said.
“Early feedback: I think I like it,” I said.
“Sweet. I think I do too. Honestly there were a lot of times, especially in the past year, where I felt like I was fighting against my instincts when it came to stuff like this,” Lexi admitted.
“I did wonder sometimes, especially as we started sleeping over more and more, what the deal was. But like you said, what we had worked, so I was fine with it.”
“Sorry, we really should have had that conversation at least a year ago,” Lexi said.
“Should we have? Probably. Does it change anything? Not really. I’m not mad about it. Maybe a little disappointed, but I get your logic. Let’s not belabor it and move forward, see how we like our new dynamic,” I said.
Lexi squeezed my hand to let me know she agreed with that plan. There was a small part of me that wanted to be upset she had withheld her orientation from me for so long, but I asked myself what I really had to complain about, and the answer was, basically nothing. Most importantly, I understood why she had made her choices. So not punishing her for something that ultimately was harmless seemed like the correct decision.
I grabbed a cart and we made our way to the clothing department. The first order of business was to find a hoodie for me, since I had forgotten to pack one. That done we proceeded to the women’s side of the department.
Lexi led us to a display of cotton lounge pants and picked out pairs for the other girls.
“I like this style because they’re super comfy, but the way they fall will also make their butts look great,” Lexi explained, then giggled. “This is the side of Lexi brain you haven’t seen so far, welcome.”
“I like it. I, too, enjoy attractive women,” I said with a small chuckle.
Next up were tops. Lexi was hemming and hawing between t-shirts and sweatshirts.
“Just get both for each of them,” I told her. “Remember, rich.”
“Right, I keep forgetting that,” Lexi shook her head slightly and began tossing garments into the cart.
“Ok, next up underwear,” Lexi said.
“Seriously?”
