“We have to go. How long are we just going to keep talking about it?” Emma said to Matt, her voice tinged with frustration.

“We’ll go, but I just need a bit more time,” Matt mumbled, his voice wavering slightly.

For Emma, this night felt like another heavy burden.

Emma and Matt lived in a city where neighbours were strangers, and people often seemed to go through the motions, like ghosts haunting their own lives. It wasn’t that Emma and Matt had fully grasped this feeling of disconnect, but what they did know was that money was getting tight. After Covid, they’d scrimped and saved, working their fingers to the bone to keep their household afloat. But how long could that last?

Matt had taken Emma to his hometown plenty of times, so she knew first hand that the struggles they faced in the city simply wouldn’t be an issue back home. Emma was bringing in a bit of cash by designing clothes. Tailoring and fashion design were her true passions. Matt always emphasized to Emma that his hometown was full of salt of the earth people. In a strange twist of fate, Covid had at least normalized remote work, a change that definitely worked in Matt’s favour.

For a while now, Emma had been really pushing Matt to pack up and move back home to set up his work there. But Matt was secretly worried about his pride. He kept thinking, what would people back home say? The guy who left to make it big was now coming back with his tail between his legs.

Emma understood this, which was why she tried to reason with him by highlighting their current plight. But the conversation always got put off. This time, however, Emma had made up her mind. She was going to convince Matt, come hell or high water. She wasn’t enjoying the loneliness of the city either.

“If I’m way off base, then tell me,” Emma challenged.

“I’m not saying you’re wrong. Quite the opposite, you’re absolutely right. But I just thought we could hold out a little longer, see if things turn around.”

“If things were going to improve, they would have years ago. It’s been long enough. I don’t like it here either. Your parents are there, all your family, they’d love to have us around.”

“Emma, try to see my point. It’s just for a little while longer.”

“Alright, in a marriage, both partners need to be on the same page. You don’t spare a single thought for what I’m going through.”

“Emma...”

“And listen here, if there’s a real reason, tell me that, instead of worrying about what people will think ... otherwise, from today onwards, I won’t ever weigh in on any of your decisions.”

With that, Emma huffily turned her back to him.

“Alright, alright ... Emma, your happiness means the world to me. You start packing, I’ll arrange for the movers tomorrow,” Matt conceded.

Emma spun around, her eyes shining with pure joy. Smiling, she cupped Matt’s face in her hands and kissed him deeply. Matt, in turn, pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her waist and holding her tight.

This was a night of pure happiness for Emma, and Matt felt a deep sense of contentment knowing he’d chosen his wife’s joy over his own hangups about what others might think.

The next morning, Emma woke up with a spring in her step, her mind immediately racing with thoughts of packing. Matt got ready and settled into his work from home routine. Emma, not wasting a moment, quickly finished her other chores and dove straight into packing.

“Now take a break, Emma! You’ve been at it since dawn!” Matt called out from the living room.

“Let me just finish this box, then I’ll get dinner ready.”

“Oh, you can sort that out later, just take five first.”

From the hall, Matt watched Emma busily packing in the next room. A thought crossed his mind: finding a wife like Emma these days was a rare gem. Not only was she wise beyond her years, but Emma was also stunningly beautiful. Her physique was so naturally sculpted, she put models to shame, without ever stepping foot in a gym.

Emma loved creating unique fashion pieces, and she’d often model them for Matt. Matt was always eagerly anticipating seeing her in a new outfit. Thanks to her figure, everything Emma wore looked tailor made.

Matt’s friend, Will, had caught wind that Matt was coming back home. Will used to live in the city too, but he’d also made the move back to their hometown. He couldn’t quite believe his buddy was joining him, so he rang Matt up first thing in the morning. After a good long chat, Matt finally spilled the beans to Will about what was really on his mind.

“Emma is my better half, and nothing means more to me than her. I sometimes mess up and overlook her feelings, but she still opens up to me about everything, instead of bottling it all up.”

Will nodded in agreement, adding his own thoughts on Emma’s praise: “Yeah, Matt, you’re one lucky guy to have someone in your life who can give you a different perspective.”

The next morning, as Emma and Matt stepped onto the familiar ground of their hometown, their hearts swelled with anticipation for the new hopes they carried. They had barely arrived when Matt’s parents were right there to greet them, waiting with open arms. Everyone was overjoyed to see each other after such a long time apart.
