Omar was gone, but the aftertaste of his filthy, corrupting presence remained. Annette couldn’t stop thinking about him. Or rather, about how she had treated him -- how she had abandoned him.

“Was he an orphan?”
“No. But he said his parents didn’t care about him at all, didn’t give him any attention. They only worked all the time. You can understand them -- they earned pennies however they could ... and in the end they raised a son who can do nothing but earn pennies the way they did.”
