The silence in the house was a living thing, thick and heavy with the aftermath of chaos. Adam followed his father through the front door, his body still humming with the residual energy from the precinct, a confusing mix of trauma and a strange, new power. Edward moved with a stiff, furious grace, not even breaking stride as he passed the living room sofa.
Karen was there, a pale, curvy shadow in the dim light. She stood up, her hands wringing together. “Edward ... Adam ... My God, are you both okay? I heard there was—”
“Get out.” Edward’s voice was a low, cold whip crack, devoid of all emotion save for a bottomless, simmering rage. He didn’t even look at her. “Pack a bag. Find a hotel. You have no place in this house anymore.”
“Edward, please, let me explain—” she pleaded, her voice trembling.
He finally stopped, turning his head just enough to spear her with a glare over his shoulder. “You betrayed me. You betrayed our family. You let that filth into our lives. The only regret I have is that it took me this long to see you for what you are. Useless.” He turned his gaze to Adam. “Get rid of her.” With that, he continued down the hall, his footsteps echoing with finality before a door slammed shut.
The weight of his dismissal seemed to crush Karen. She sank back onto the sofa, a soft sob escaping her lips. Adam stood frozen, caught between his father’s icy command and the raw misery on his mother’s face. He saw the woman who had always been too busy, too focused on her social life, and too absent. But he also saw the tenderness that still lived in his memory, the mother who had read him stories, and the softness of her skin when she’d kissed his forehead goodnight.
He couldn’t just throw her out. He moved to the sofa and sat beside her, the leather sighing under his weight. “Mom,” he said softly.
She looked up, her eyes red-rimmed and shimmering with tears. “He hates me.”
“He’s ... processing,” Adam said, the words feeling hollow. “A lot happened.”
“I just wanted ... I just wanted to feel seen again,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I’m sorry, Adam. I’m so sorry.” She reached out and placed a hand on his knee. Her touch was warm and familiar and sent an unexpected jolt through him. He could smell her perfume, something floral and expensive, mixed with the faint, intoxicating scent of her skin.
“I know,” he murmured.
She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a hushed, desperate plea. “Just one more time. Let me have one more memory of this house that isn’t his hatred. One more time with you. Then I’ll go. I’ll leave you both alone. I promise.”
Her eyes were begging, her full lips parted. The neckline of her blouse dipped low, revealing the smooth, creamy swell of her enhanced breasts. The thought was wrong, a fracture in the world’s order, but the door his father had opened downstairs had blown all the old rules to pieces. Everything was wrong. And in that wrongness, this felt ... inevitable.
He didn’t answer with words. He leaned in and gently pressed his lips to hers. It wasn’t a kiss of passion, not at first. It was a seal on a deal, a farewell. But then her mouth opened under his, and her tongue met his with a desperate, hungry flicker. Her hand slid from his knee up his thigh, her fingers pressing into the denim with urgent need.
A low groan rumbled in his chest. He kissed her back, deeper, his own hunger awakening. This was purging, his father had said. This was cutting out a sickness. He would purge her from them, from himself.
