Edward’s head snapped up from where it rested against mine. The languid, sated possessiveness in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp alertness. Carlos. The unspoken name hung between us, a toxic cloud. He’d called it.
“Stay here,” Edward commanded, his voice low and gravelly. He grabbed a black silk robe from the back of the door, tying it firmly around his waist. It did little to hide the powerful lines of his body or the contained, aggressive energy thrumming through him. He was a doctor, and Edward’s head snapped up from where it rested against mine.
He was a doctor and a businessman, but in that moment, he was a pure, primal protector.
I followed him to the top of the stairs, my heart a frantic drum against my ribs, ignoring his order. I couldn’t stay hidden. This was my mess.
Edward yanked the front door open. Framed in the afternoon light was Carlos. He wasn’t in his cop uniform. He wore tight black jeans and a grey t-shirt that stretched across his chest, but his posture was all cop—wide-legged and assertive, his hand resting conspicuously on the butt of the gun holstered at his hip. His handsome face, usually marked by a confident smirk, was set in hard, furious lines.
“Adam,” Carlos barked, his dark eyes locking onto me standing on the staircase. “Get your things. You’re coming with me.”
Edward didn’t move an inch, blocking the doorway entirely. “He’s not going anywhere with you,” he said, his voice dangerously calm, a flat monotone that was more threatening than any shout.
“This doesn’t concern you, Doctor,” Carlos spat the title like an insult. “This is between me and the boy. He’s in danger here.” His eyes swept over Edward’s disheveled state, my nakedness barely concealed by the shadows of the stairwell. His jaw tightened. “I heard enough on the phone. I know what you’re doing to him. It’s sick. I’m taking him somewhere safe.”
“The only danger here is you,” Edward countered, his voice dropping even lower. “Standing on my porch, making threats. You will turn around, get in your car, and drive away. If you do that, we can forget this ... indiscretion.”
Carlos let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. “Or what? You’ll sue me? Call my captain? Go ahead. I’ll have a few things to say about what goes on in this house. Now move.” His hand flexed on the grip of his gun, a subtle, terrifying movement.
A cold dread coiled in my stomach. This was escalating too fast. “Carlos, just go,” I pleaded, my voice shaky.
“You see?” Carlos said, his gaze flicking to Edward with a venomous triumph. “He’s scared of you. He wants to leave. Now step the fuck aside.”
Edward didn’t budge. Instead, he took a single, deliberate step forward, crossing the threshold onto the porch. He was taller than Carlos, his presence somehow larger, more imposing despite the other man’s weapon. “You seem to be confused about who holds the power here,” Edward said, his words measured and icy. “That badge doesn’t make you a god. It makes you a public servant. And you are currently trespassing and making threats on private property. The consequences for that will be severe. This is your last warning. Leave.”
For a tense moment, they just stared each other down, two alpha predators circling. The air crackled with hostility. Then, Carlos’s face twisted into a snarl. “I’m done talking.”
His movement was blur-fast. He drew his service weapon, the metal glinting coldly in the sun, and leveled it at Edward’s chest. My breath hitched in pure terror.
“Adam, now!” Carlos yelled, his aim unwavering.
Time seemed to slow. Edward didn’t flinch. He looked from the barrel of the gun to Carlos’s enraged face, and a slow, chilling smile spread across his lips. It was the most frightening thing I’d ever seen.
“You poor, foolish man,” Edward murmured. “You think that little thing frightens me?” He took another step forward, pressing his chest directly against the muzzle of the gun. “You think you can walk into my home and steal what is mine?”
Carlos’s eyes widened slightly, thrown by the absurd, fearless act. His confidence flickered. “I will shoot you.”
“No,” Edward said, his voice a soft, intimate whisper that carried across the porch. “You won’t. Because you’re a corrupt little man who preys on boys he thinks are weak. You’re not a killer. You’re a coward.”
In that split second of hesitation, Edward moved. It wasn’t a flashy martial arts move. It was simple, brutal efficiency. His hand snapped up, not to grab the gun, but to slam the heel of his palm into Carlos’s wrist. There was a sharp, sickening crack. Carlos cried out in pain and surprise, his fingers spasming open. The gun clattered onto the porch tiles.
Edward didn’t stop. He drove his other fist into Carlos’s solar plexus, a short, explosive punch that stole the air from the cop’s lungs. Carlos doubled over, gasping, and Edward grabbed a handful of his dark hair, yanking his head back to look him in the eye.
“You are going to crawl back to your car,” Edward growled, his face inches from Carlos’s pained one. “You are going to forget this address. You are going to forget his name. If I ever see you again, if I so much as sense you near what’s mine, the report that crosses your captain’s desk will detail every sordid, illegal message you sent to a minor. You will lose your badge. You will lose your freedom. Do you understand?”
He shoved Carlos away from him. The cop stumbled back, clutching his injured wrist, his face a mask of humiliated rage and pain. He looked from Edward to me, his eyes burning with a promise of unfinished business, but the fight was gone. He was beaten. Without another word, he turned and staggered to his car, leaving his weapon on the ground.
Edward watched him until the car screeched away down the street. Then he slowly turned to me. The cold fury bled from his expression, replaced by something hot, dark, and wildly possessive. He kicked the gun aside, a dismissive, contemptuous gesture, and walked back into the house, closing the door with a soft, final click.
He didn’t speak. He just came to me on the stairs, his eyes devouring me. The adrenaline, the fear, the raw display of dominance—it had ignited a fire in me that burned away everything else. I was painfully, achingly hard.
He reached me, his hands cupping my face, his thumbs stroking my cheeks. His breathing was still slightly elevated from the fight. “You see?” he whispered, his voice thick with desire and triumph. “No one takes what’s mine.”
He crushed his mouth to mine. This kiss wasn’t like the ones in the shower. It was savage, claiming, and fueled by violence and victory. His tongue plunged into my mouth, and I met it with my own, a moan trapped in my throat. His hands left my face, sliding down my body, gripping my bare ass and lifting me effortlessly. I wrapped my legs around his waist, my hard cock pressed against the silk of his robe.
He carried me like that, kissing me with a desperate hunger, back to the bedroom. He laid me down on the rumpled sheets, his body covering mine, a delicious, crushing weight. He broke the kiss, staring down at me with blazing eyes.
