Thursday passed fairly normally. Marcus spent much of the day connecting with old friends. Paula didn’t meet up with Heather beyond a few playful texts, though those had become a little flirtier than they used to be. Raven had to go to her job at the salon early that day, but by the afternoon she was back and prancing around the Greenfield house again, determined to brighten everyone’s day. And Zander was still incapable of having his day brightened.

At the news studio, Barry was the picture of civility and normalcy, and Keiko conducted her broadcast just as professionally and without distractions as she would on any normal day. Unless of course the way she couldn’t stop glancing in Barry’s direction and wondering if at any moment he was going to surprise her with that vibrator and talk her into putting it in again counted as a distraction.

On Friday morning, Keiko was once again seated at the breakfast table, looking at her daughters seated on opposite sides, eyes focused on their individual plates, not acknowledging each other at all. Keiko looked between them as she sipped her coffee, contemplating starting a conversation in hopes of getting them talking, but not wanting to start another round of fruit flinging.

Before she could make up her mind, they heard the sound of footsteps and Zander appeared in the kitchen, getting a plate and loading it up with his breakfast without looking at anyone in the dining room. Keiko leaned toward him and called, “There’s a spot for you here at the table, Zander.”

“Thanks, Mom, I’m good,” he said flatly.

Keiko deflated. “Zander, I’d like for you to join us.”

“Yeah, well, there’s a lot of things I’d like,” was his flippant reply.

“Zander,” Keiko moaned, “you can’t just keep taking all your meals to your room and hiding from us.”

“Mom, just let him go,” Paula said. “I’d rather he keep the rain cloud he’s carrying in there than out here.”

Keiko’s heart broke a little when she heard that. But she was saved the trouble of commenting on it when Raven appeared to do it for her, dragging Marcus along by the hand. “Now that was a pretty shitty thing to say,” Raven said as she strode into the room. “If you ask me, he could use a little family love to chase that rain cloud away.”

“Yeah, well let me know if you find any,” Zander snarked back, and started carrying his full plate away.

Keiko was again about to say something in protest, when again someone else appeared to interrupt. Rick entered the kitchen, all dressed up for work, and began pouring himself a cup of coffee as he said, “Don’t leave yet, son. I have something to say to you all.”

Zander sighed. “Can’t it wait, Dad?”

“What, you got somewhere to go?” Marcus said.

“Cause if you had a date, that’d be progress,” Raven offered with a grin.

Zander huffed, defeated. He reluctantly turned and carried his plate back to the table, where he took a seat at the far end.

Rick stepped into the dining room, standing like he was about to address an executive board instead of his family. “I want to let you all know, I’m leaving on Monday for a company summit. I’ll be gone for a week.”

If he was hoping for a big reaction, he was disappointed. “I see,” was all Keiko said, taking a sip of her coffee.

“We’ll miss you, Dad,” Paula deadpanned, in a tone that she could not have made sound more insincere and said purely out of obligation if she’d tried. Zander didn’t even say anything, or even look up from his plate.

Bobbi at least showed a modicum of interest when she asked, “Where is it going to be?”

“It’s ... in Houston,” Rick said, covering a barely noticeable hesitation.

“Houston, huh?” Raven said, leaning a cheek on her fist and eyeing Rick as if she saw right through him. “I hear that’s lovely this time of year.”

Rick turned to look at her, seeing her sly grin, the look of someone who knew something she wasn’t telling. It was enough to make Rick a little nervous, but not enough to risk asking her what that look might have meant. “ ... Yes, well,” he said, moving things past that suspicious response. “If any of you need to contact me while I’m gone, I’ll have my phone with me.”

“Good to know, Dad,” said Marcus, whom they all knew was going to be back at school by the time Rick left anyway.

“Is that all?” Keiko said simply.

Rick sighed at her cold response. “Yes, that’s all.” He hurriedly downed the rest of his coffee, and grabbed a piece of toast before picking up his briefcase. “I’ve got to get to work now. I’ll see you all tonight.”

A few of them gave him half-hearted byes as he headed out the door. Then Zander stood up from the table, picking up his half-eaten plate. “Well now that that’s done, if nobody minds.” And he started carrying his plate to the stairs.

“Zander...” Keiko started to protest, but Zander was already disappearing up to his room. Marcus and Bobbi were both watching as he left, while Paula only remained focused on her plate.

Raven, however, was focused on the door that Rick had left through, wearing a devious little smirk that no one else at the table saw at that moment.

A little while later, as Raven and Marcus were finishing up their own breakfast and Paula had already finished hers and left, Raven received a text message. “Oh, my brother’s here,” she said upon reading it, starting to rise from the table.

“Your brother?” Keiko asked.

“Oh, yeah,” Marcus said. “Raven’s family is going to visit Uncle Sota’s family today, since Mina’s home.”

“Oh,” Keiko said, blinking. Of course she’d known already that Raven’s family was friends with her brother’s family, but somehow it always surprised her anew whenever she was reminded of it. Another unfortunate side effect of limiting her contact with Sota.

Raven bent and gave Marcus a quick kiss. “I’ll see you tonight,” she whispered.

“Can’t wait.”

Raven scampered out the door, finding the familiar white Nissan parked along the curb. She hurried down the driveway and hopped into the passenger seat, greeting the sight of her brother Terrance’s angular bronze features and slick black hair that formed a curtain on the right side of his face. “Hiya, spaz,” he said with a teasing grin.

“Hi, dope,” she teased back, before leaning in to give him a very unsisterly kiss.

He started driving away, and Raven kicked off her flipflops and put her feet up on the dash, crossing her ankles. “I got the message you sent me,” Terrance said. “The one about your boyfriend’s dad.”

“And?” she prompted, lifting her eyebrows. “Think you can do it? Figure out where he’s staying?”

“Please, don’t insult me,” he laughed. “Of course I can.”

“And Mom and Dad, they’re on board with the plan?”

“We’ll see ‘em in an hour and a half, you can ask them yourself if you want,” he shrugged. “But last I checked, they sounded like they were game.”

“Perfect,” Raven smiled, leaning back in her seat and putting her hands behind her head.

“Oh, by the way,” Terrance said, “did I hear something about you wanting to record things today?”

“I’d say you did hear something like that,” she nodded. Then she glanced at him, the thought occurring to her to ask, “that’s okay with you, right?”

Terrance shrugged again. “I guess it’s okay with me, I’m just curious why this time. You looking for a something to add to your collection?”

This time Raven hesitated with her answer. “Actually ... I want a visual aid to explain a few things to Marcus.”

Terrance took his eyes off the road briefly to widen them at her.

“When he’s ready to see it,” Raven amended, holding up a finger.

With Raven gone, Marcus was left to ponder his options for the day. He went through his typical workout a little early, mostly just to kill time, and then started to wander the house aimlessly. He considered calling up some of his guys again and seeing if they were up for another game of hoops, but he knew a lot of them had other things going on today, and honestly, he wasn’t feeling much in the mood himself.

He spent some time watching a basketball game or two on TV and downing a few beers, and watched while Bobbi and Paula snuck off to join Heather and Andie to do their usual girl stuff. Once Mom left for work, Marcus realized it was just him and Zander in the house.

Which suddenly got him starting to think about Raven’s very unconventional idea.

He didn’t think he knew any other guys with a girlfriend who would ask permission to sleep with his brother. But then, he didn’t know of any other guys who were dating a girl quite like Raven. Unconventional just kind of came with the territory. So how did he feel about the idea?

He wasn’t leaping at it, that was for sure. But as much as he wanted to, he couldn’t completely fault her logic either. Zander really did need to get over his ex, and getting laid probably was a good way for him to do that. He and Raven did both have indefinite hall passes, after all. But, his brother...

Marcus and Zander had never exactly been the chummiest brothers in the world. Marcus was into the L.A. Lakers; Zander was into World of Warcraft. Marcus worked out like a fiend; Zander was skinny as a rail. Marcus had been known as a ladykiller in his high school days, and honestly couldn’t remember the exact number of girls he’d dated; Zander had been all but celibate until he got lucky with one chick, who turned out to be a cheating skank.

But Zander was still the only brother Marcus had, and that counted for something, surely. Especially with three sisters. While they’d never hung out all that much, Marcus had to admit to some pride in his memories of roughing up the jerks who had tripped Zander into the mud or ruined his dioramas or scribbled a picture of a dick on his backpack. So yes, Marcus did have a history of backing up his little brother from time to time, and doing the same now wouldn’t be too out of character for him.

He just hadn’t ever imagined he’d do it by loaning out his girlfriend.

After thinking about it for a while longer, Marcus finally headed upstairs and knocked on Zander’s door. When there wasn’t an answer the first time, he knocked again. The door opened a second or two later, and Zander looked out at him suspiciously. “Yeah?” Zander asked in a wary tone.

Marcus paused, not quite sure how to start. “How’s it going, little bro?” he said simply.

To his surprise, Zander looked worried. “If this is about that thing with Raven in the bathroom the other day, I swear I didn’t—”

“Whoa, gear down, man!” Marcus said, raising his hands in a placating gesture. “I’m not here to get you in trouble or anything. I just thought ... you wanna play a few rounds of Call of Duty?”

Zander raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Really?”

“Yeah, why not?” Marcus shrugged, sticking his hands in his pockets to appear as non-threatening as he could. “All the girls are gone, it’s just us here right now, and I’ve only got a couple more days before I head back to SFSU, so ... thought we’d take this chance to spend some bro time.”

“For real?” Zander asked, taking a cautious step closer.

“Look, I’m bored, okay?” Marcus said, shifting tactics. “I wouldn’t mind spending some time blasting terrorists, unless you’ve got something more pressing to do.”
