SIX YEARS LATER...
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen this many cars at Sacred Oaks,” Zander observed as he pulled into their reserved parking space, which appeared to be the only available one left.
“Sure you have,” Heather said from the seat beside him. “When Marcus and Raven got married, remember?”
Zander parked the car and looked up to meet his wife’s sly grin. “Okay, fine, but it’s still a rare occurrence,” he conceded.
“Well it’s the first wedding we’ve had here since Marcus and Raven’s,” Paula commented from the seat behind Zander. “Go figure.”
Lance reached out to stroke her thigh. “You ever wish we’d had our wedding here?” he asked.
“No,” Paula said immediately, placing her hand atop her husband’s. “Ours was perfect.” It had indeed been a beautiful double ceremony for the four of them, the two couples saying their vows side by side. There had been some talk about possibly getting married in the nude the way Marcus and Raven had done, but ultimately there were too many of Lance’s family looking to attend who weren’t part of that life, and besides, Heather had dreamed of her white dress ceremony since she was five.
It surprised no one that Bobbi and Andie were going the less traditional route and opting to say their I-do’s in the buff. They were already bucking convention by having a lesbian wedding in the first place, let alone one with the kind of reception they had planned, and anyway no one could accuse Andie especially of caring what others thought of her.
Not that the four of them had an exactly conventional arrangement themselves, they reflected as they got out of the car and started to strip. They effectively had a four-way marriage, all living together, sleeping some nights in the same big bed and other nights trading off partners. On paper, Zander was married to Heather and Paula was married to Lance. In practice, Paula and Heather each had two husbands, and Zander and Lance each had two wives. The fact that one husband/wife pair in that dynamic were brother and sister was just incidental.
“Someone want to get the kids?” Zander asked as he set his folded clothes on the driver’s seat.
“We’re on it,” Paula assured him, setting her own clothes down and then leaning in towards the bucket seats in the back where the two little car seats were mounted. Paula and Lance’s 11-month-old daughter Emma was awake and alert, staring wide-eyed at her mommy as she sucked on a pudgy fist, while Zander and Heather’s 8-month-old son Darren sagged against his restraints in blissful slumber. They collected the two in their baby carriers and began making their way up to the grounds, Emma looking around in wonder while Darren barely made a sleepy little gurgling noise.
Madeline was working the reception area, and came out to greet them as they approached. “There you are! We’ve been waiting for you!” she beamed, and then her face split into a wide smile as she looked down at the two bundles that Paula and Lance were carrying. “And there are my little sweet potatoes!” she cooed as she gave Emma a little tickle under the chin, making the baby girl giggle.
Everyone had been so excited when Paula and Heather had gotten pregnant at almost the same time, and given birth only a few months apart. Their babies were technically cousins, but with their less than conventional arrangement, they were being raised like brother and sister. And someday, when they were a bit older, no one in the family doubted they would grow up to become the happiest of lovers. In this family, how could they not?
“She’s been excited all day,” Paula grinned down at her giggling daughter. “I think she knows what’s happening.”
“Not like this one,” Lance said, hoisting the sleepy Darren. “Dead to the world, this little guy.”
“Yep, a lazy lump just like his daddy,” Heather teased, giving Zander’s arm a little pinch.
“All right,” Zander moaned, brushing off his wife’s playful ribbing. “Is everybody else here?”
“Yep, waiting for you up at their cabin,” Madeline nodded. “You should remember where—”
“Unca Zanderrrrrrr!” a tiny voice pealed through the air. They looked up to see an excited two-year-old come rushing at them, throwing his tiny arms around Zander’s legs.
“Hey, Arthur, you little champ,” Zander grinned and hoisted his fidgeting nephew up into his arms. As he stood, his eyes fell on Marcus coming up the path, followed by a very pregnant Raven.
“Hi Marcus!” Paula beamed, stepping up to give her big brother a one-armed hug while holding Emma’s carrier to the side. Marcus couldn’t resist giving a little squeeze of her butt when he returned the hug.
Heather stepped up to hug and kiss Raven hello, and laid a hand on her swollen belly. “Hello, Violet!” she cooed at the round shape. Then she looked up at Raven’s face and asked, “You getting close?”
“Two more months,” Raven grinned, stroking her bump.
“They’re all waiting up this way,” Marcus said, gesturing up the path behind him. “Come on.”
“I think we remember where the cabin is,” Paula said as they started following him.
“Lily’s already here?” Zander asked.
“Yep, her flight got in last night,” Marcus nodded. “Took a bit of persuading to postpone her photo gig in Ibiza, but she managed.”
“You ask me,” Lance smirked, “she could have had a big career in front of the camera instead of behind it.”
“Nah, we got Mom for that,” Paula grinned, as they all fondly recalled some of the especially racy content Keiko had recently posted online. Lily had in fact developed her interest in camera work after the number of times she’d served as cinematographer for the videos that their mother was now making good money off of. “But I think Lily would take that as a compliment anyway.”
“She should,” Lance schmoozed. “I really mean it.”
“Any word on her and Terrance?” Zander asked Raven specifically, setting little Arthur down to let the toddler waddle at their side before Marcus took his hand.
“I think they’re back to just being friends with benefits,” Raven sighed wistfully, thinking of Terrance and Lily’s multiple failed attempts at a steady relationship. “My brother just doesn’t seem to like settling down, and Lily’s career keeps sending her around the world.”
“Well we’re glad she made it back here for this at least,” Heather said as they turned up the branching path to the Greenfields’ cabin.
“As if I’d miss it,” a voice said as Lily appeared emerging from the door. “Hey guys!” She went around to greet everyone with a hug and a quick kiss, and then bent over to give fawning greetings to her baby niece and nephew, the latter of whom was finally starting to wake up and rub his little fists over his eyes.
Rick, Keiko and Krista were waiting for them all with similar effusive greetings when they came inside, with Keiko insisting on lifting Emma out of her carrier and smothering her baby granddaughter with kisses. Krista wanted to do the same with Darren, but he still seemed a little too fussy for that.
“Where are the brides to be?” Paula asked, looking around.
“Upstairs, having some jitter-calming pre-wedding sex,” Rick said, pointing to the ceiling. And now that they listened, they could in fact hear some faint moaning sounds coming from above.
“I’m sure we can find time for them to come down and say hello before we have to start getting them ready walk the aisle,” Keiko shrugged, cradling Emma against her hip.
Zander and Paula looked at each other pointedly. “We actually have something more than ‘hello’ to say,” Paula said.
Everyone raised an eyebrow. “That sounds a bit ominous,” Rick said.
“We just have something we want to talk to you about,” Zander said. “Preferably without the kids around.”
“Are you sure this is the day for this?” Lance said, his face scrunched in uncertainty.
“Yeah, it’s kind of a big deal,” Heather concurred. “And today’s supposed to be about Bobbi and Andie.”
“I know,” Paula offered, slightly ashamed. “I just don’t think I can sit on this any longer.”
They waited a little longer before Krista went up to the room that Bobbi and Andie were making use of, giving them a little knock on their door to let them know that more family was here, while Raven called up her parents and the Ishizawas to come get the kids. Maybe ten minutes later, the two brides to be came scampering down the stairs to smother everyone with kisses, Bobbi especially showering affection on Zander. “Can you believe I’m gonna be married the next time we fuck?” she whispered, lifting her face from Zander’s neck.
“Yeah, that’s the thing to focus on,” Zander drawled, though his hands were in fact drifting down to his baby sister’s ass as he said it.
Carlos and Srishti arrived at the cabin a short while later, and then Sota showed up with Mina and Ami in tow. Once the cooing over babies was done and they collected the kids to take them outside, people took seats on couches and chairs. “So what’s this you want to talk about?” Krista asked.
Paula and Zander looked at each other and took a calming breath. “Well,” Paula said nervously, “the four of us have been talking a lot, and ... well...”
Heather came in to finish her sentence: “We’ve been discussing the possibility of our next babies.”
“Really?” Bobbi beamed, her face brightening.
“You sure it’s not a little early for that?” Rick asked warily. “The ones you’ve got aren’t even a year old yet.”
“We know, Dad,” Zander nodded, “but there’s a reason we want to talk to you about this now.”
“You see...” Paula began again, still nervous, “we’ve been thinking we want to make this whole four-way marriage thing feel more official. And we think the best way to do that is ... by...”
“Trading breeding partners, in a nutshell,” Lance supplied.
The room fell momentarily silent. “Wait, back up,” Keiko said, holding her hands up. “What exactly are you saying?”
