Dana was having a lot of trouble focusing on her work when she returned to it on Monday. The day started out with a series of misplaced files and memos that went unnoticed, and a big coffee stain on her skirt when she was too distracted to stop the brewer before her cup overflowed. And it was early in the afternoon when she realized she had been staring at the same blank space and blinking cursor for the past half hour, after she’d still only completed the first half page of the legal document she was supposed to be typing up.

She just couldn’t get the stress of what was going on with Kenneth off her mind. She couldn’t understand why he would just leave like that, no matter what he said on a piece of paper. What had she missed? How could she not have known that her husband was struggling with something, and right in front of her? Was she a bad wife for not having seen it? Or had he simply not trusted her enough to tell her? And in which case, why not?

She had tried calling him a couple times on Sunday. The first time he had accepted her call, repeated that he was sorry, that he would let her know when he could say more, and that he loved her, before hanging up. The next time she’d tried calling she had been sent straight to voicemail. And Dana was still left with no more answers than before.

What was even more frustrating was how calmly the girls were taking it all. Heather and Andie had seemed reasonably upset and surprised on Saturday when he’d first left, but by Sunday evening they had already seemed in much better spirits, as if all was fine with the world. And Dana suspected the time they spent with the Greenfield kids had something to do with that. A weekend spent out with their best friends and Heather’s boyfriend, doing whatever teenagers did these days, seemed to have put the girls in much better spirits, while Dana was still left to wallow in worry and uncertainty. She didn’t know if she was angry at them for not being more worried, or jealous of their ability to cope.

Well, he was only their stepfather, after all. Just the guy their mother had brought home and married, so they had a fair excuse to be less attached to him. Although it wasn’t as if they were particularly close to their birth father either, whom as far as Dana knew the girls hadn’t spoken to in over five years, and who even now was probably in the arms of some barmaid and avoiding paying off his gambling debt.

Dana pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed heavily, having all but completely forgotten about her work when Mr. Pelucci walked by her cubicle, and stopped after getting a good look at her. “Dana?”

She lifted her head, and then snapped into a more professional posture on her keyboard. “Um, sorry Mr. Pelucci. I’m focused.” She mechanically typed out a few more words, and then stopped again, her attention slipping away.

“Dana, are you alright?” Mr. Pelucci stepped inside her cubicle, which she had never known him to do before. That in itself was an indicator of the aura she must be giving off.

Dana slumped, letting out a bleak sigh. “It’s my husband. He just bolted from the house, and said he had some kind of problem, but he wouldn’t say what. I don’t know where he is, and I don’t know when he’s coming home ... I don’t know what the hell I’m doing!” At this last part she threw herself forward, leaning her elbows on the desk and her forehead on her palms.

Mr. Pelucci just stared at her, at a loss for how to respond. Personal support and life advice wasn’t exactly his forte. “Have you talked to anyone?”

“Like who?” Dana said in a dark tone. “The cops? He left of his own free will. I can’t force him home, even if I knew where he was.”

Mr. Pelucci fell silent again, and after a moment of distressed silence, he offered the only support he could: “Why don’t you take the rest of the day off. You can come back when you’re a little more put together.”

“No, I couldn’t—”

“It doesn’t look like you’re getting much work done here, anyway.”

She turned back to her monitor, and found she couldn’t argue with that.

As Dana got into her car and started the drive home, she contemplated if she might try taking a page out of the girls’ book and refocus on doing things she enjoyed. Maybe that was what she needed: to get her mind off Kenneth for a while. After all, he wasn’t in jail, or the hospital, or the morgue. He was just somewhere else, doing something else, and for whatever reason he was keeping her out of it. As much as that pained her, it was his own choice. So she could at least try to live her life until he decided to come home, couldn’t she?

If she told herself that enough, maybe she’d start to believe it.

She still had the girls, anyway. And this was the last summer before Heather left for college. On the way home, she contemplated ideas for what she might do with them to take her mind off the things she couldn’t control. Maybe they could spend a day in the park, or go to a movie, or go miniature golfing, or...

... or hope that the girls would even want to do anything with their boring old mom.

She was still contemplating her approach and tossing around ideas when she pulled up to the house, and thought to wonder if the girls were even home right now. It briefly occurred to her that she maybe should have texted to let them know she was coming home early, but decided that it wouldn’t make much difference. She could just surprise them, and—

All thought of day plans and quality time evaporated the moment she stepped inside the door and heard the sounds the house was ringing with.

“MMMM, FUUUUUCK!”

“OH, YES, DON’T STOP!”

“AAAAHHH!!!! I’M GONNA CUM!!!!”

Dana froze, rooted in place as her blood turned to ice. Time seemed to slow to a crawl as she began zombie walking toward the living room, her mind conjuring up a thousand nightmare images of what she would find in there.

But the scene that greeted her as she stepped into the room was worse than any of them.

She stared wide-eyed and open-mouthed in absolute disbelief at the six naked teenagers in the room before her. Lance lay across the couch with Andie mounted on his lap, bouncing up and down on him, very visibly impaled on his cock. Heather was straddling his face, her head thrown back as she savored the feel of his tongue lapping her clit and Andie sucking on her breasts. On the floor beside them were the Greenfield kids, Zander on his knees thrusting doggystyle into Paula, who had her head ducked between the spread legs of Bobbi, who lay back and writhed under the tongue lashing she was getting from her sister.

The floor seemed to have dropped out from beneath Dana’s feet as she watched Heather cup Andie’s face and start making out with her sister. She recalled that she had heard suspicious sounds coming from behind Heather and Andie’s doors, but she’d always had the luxury of reasonable doubt so long as there had been a closed door separating them and she couldn’t see what was happening. She had no such luxury now; there was no denying what she was seeing with her own eyes. And it was way beyond anything she could have imagined. Her girls did not do things like this; she had always known that. And yet, here they were.

Heather happened to turn her head then, seemingly to admire the incestuous threesome happening on the floor beside her, and her eyes finally fell on Dana standing there. Heather’s eyes widened in alarm as she jumped back off of Lance’s face. “MOM???” she shrieked.

The orgy came to an immediate halt as the kids all looked up, disengaging from whoever they were entangled with. “Oh, shit!” Paula gasped, putting a hand over her breasts as she crawled backwards toward the couch.

“Mrs. Ulrich?” Bobbi gaped, standing up and not attempting to cover her nudity.

“Mom, we thought you were...” Andie stammered, and looked around as if for help.

It took Dana a second or two to find her voice. But the moment she did, she used it to full effect. “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE????”

“Mom, this isn’t what it looks like!” Heather said in a panicked voice.

“It’s not?” Lance said. Andie smacked him on the arm.

“This is what you’ve been doing?!?” Dana bellowed. “What are you two doing with each other? And with your friend’s boyfriend? And you, Zander, what the hell are you doing right in front of your girlfriend, and with your own sisters???”

“Look, this is our choice!” Bobbi declared, stepping forward. “It’s what we—”

“FOR GOD’S SAKE, PUT YOUR CLOTHES ON!” Dana shouted, finally compelled to clap a hand over her eyes.

The kids started scrambling to obey, snatching up their scattered clothes from around the room and hurrying to pull them on.

“Really, Mom, we all agreed to this,” Heather said as she was fastening her bra. “It’s all consensual, and we’re all being safe, we’re not hurting—”

“It’s incest!” Dana thundered, making a face of revulsion. “It’s sick and it’s wrong!”

“No it’s not!” Bobbi insisted.

“We don’t see anything wrong with it, Mom!” Andie said. “We’re just having fu—”

“STOP!!!” Dana shouted, covering her ears. “You girls, go to your rooms! And the rest of you, I want you out of this house right now! I’m going to be calling your parents to tell them about this!”

This, more than anything, triggered looks of panic among the kids, as blood drained from several faces and mouths dropped open in horror. “Mrs. Ulrich, no!” Paula pleaded.

“Mom, please!” Andie whined.

“OUT!!!” Dana bellowed, thrusting a finger toward the door.

The kids traded despondent looks, and the Greenfield kids started making their exit. As Lance followed after them, it belatedly occurred to her that she didn’t know the number of Lance’s father; in fact she’d never even met the man. Hopefully Rick and Keiko would know how to reach him; as it was, Dana already wasn’t looking forward to the call she was going to have to make to them. How did you even tell someone their kids were doing... that?!?

As Dana was contemplating this situation, Heather and Andie obediently retreated to their rooms. What was not so obedient was when Heather retrieved her phone and started typing a text to the person she most trusted to have a plan in a crisis like this.

We have a 911, she sent to Raven.

Keiko was in unusually good spirits when she strolled into the studio that afternoon. She was actually humming to herself when she opened the door to her office to begin going over the script for her broadcast this evening. She got a few curious looks from the coworkers she’d passed on the way there, but she couldn’t have cared less.

It had been a long time since she’d felt this uplifted after sex. Most often recently her sexual experiences had left her feeling either ashamed of herself or empty. But her funtime with Krista over the weekend had actually been fulfilling and given her an extra spring in her step, which she still had now, even two days later. And the irony of it being with the woman her husband had been cheating on her with was not lost on her.

She was just sitting down at her desk, sorting through script pages and humming a merry tune when her door opened. “Well, good to see you high spirits for a change,” Barry mused.

Of course, the one person who could ruin her good mood would arrive, but she was not about to let him have that victory over her. “Yes, I quite agree with you, Barry,” she said calmly. Then she leaned forward, resting her chin on a fist propped on her elbow and said, “And if you’re here to tell me about your daring plan for tonight’s show, I think you’re in the wrong office.”

“No, nothing of the sort,” he said with a smile that was all too oily. “My daring plans are for this Friday night, with you and Arlene in the privacy of my home. I just wanted to come and tell you to set aside some time for that.”

“Oh did you?” Keiko said, not trying to hide her disdain as she sat back. “In that case ... you are definitely in the wrong office.” And then she turned her chair away from him, picking up her script pages again.

“This is charming, what you’re trying to do,” Barry schmoozed, folding his arms and leering at her. “This whole empowerment thing, it’s adorable. But I know you, Keiko. It’s not gonna last. And I’m pretty confident you’ll be at my house on Friday night.”

Keiko snorted a derisive laugh. “Sure of yourself, aren’t you?”

“I’m a newsman,” he shrugged. “I report it like it is.”

“Well I think you need to check your sources again. You know where my door is.” She turned back to her script pages again, hoping this time he’d get the hint and leave.

He didn’t.

In fact, what he said next was enough to bring Keiko’s uplifted mood crashing down and bursting into flames.

“You know ... I’d really hate to think what Jon would say if he found out what his anchor lady has been doing on live TV these past few months.”

Keiko froze, her heart dropping into her stomach. She slowly turned her head to look up at Barry, who was making a face of mock concern. “Wow, that could really get ugly,” he said, pretending to cringe. “I think she’d at the very least be fired, and quite possibly blacklisted. Ooh, and that’s assuming he doesn’t take legal action for public indecency! Yikes!” At this last word he lifted his eyebrows and looked at her, letting a hint of his malicious grin show through his facade of concern.

Keiko’s mouth hung open as she stared at him in horror. “Are you ... are you blackmailing me?”

“Oh, now we don’t need to put such ugly labels on it,” Barry said, sticking his hands in his pockets. “Why don’t we just call it a mutually beneficial arrangement. Sound good?” When Keiko didn’t answer except to gape at him, Barry finally turned and sauntered out the door, grinning proudly. “Good luck on tonight’s broadcast. Looking forward to Friday!”

Rick’s brain was working a mile a minute as he drove home from work. He’d been in a state of combined shock and turmoil from the moment he’d gotten that call from Dana, telling him what she’d found his kids doing. He’d been at his desk going over quarterly statements when she’d called him, and once he’d heard what she’d said, the prospect of continuing to work had seemed practically ludicrous. When Krista had come into his office, seen his face and asked what was wrong, he’d spoken like a man in a trance when he’d answered her. And even now, just a short while later, he still didn’t have a clear memory of how she’d reacted.

His kids were committing incest with each other. And he should feel ... how exactly? Shocked? Angry? Did he have a right to feel that way, after what he’d done with the Monteverdes? After what he’d done with Lily?

All he knew for sure was that there was no chance of getting any more work done today. He informed the rest of his staff that he was taking the rest of the day off, and was now speeding home to deal with his kids ... somehow...

One of the things that was especially bothering him now was the idea of having to tell Keiko. He still wasn’t sure why he’d said he’d do that, as Dana had offered to call Keiko and tell her what she’d just told him, but Rick had heard the discomfort in her tone and automatically said “No, I’ll tell her.” He was seriously regretting that now. The idea of telling her about it ... especially with all of his own secrets that he’d kept from her...

Zander’s car was in the driveway when he arrived at the house. He hurried inside, looking around at the empty rooms, and shouted up the stairs, “Zander! Paula! Bobbi!”

Moments later, three meek-looking teenagers appeared out of their rooms, cautiously approaching the bannisters. “Yeah, Dad?” Zander said in a small voice.

“Come down here right now,” he ordered.

The kids exchanged commiserating looks, and began slowly marching down the stairs with the air of convicts on their way to the gallows. Rick pointed to the family room couch and commanded, “Sit.” They didn’t argue. As they sat looking pitiful, Rick stood before them with arms folded, trying his best to look like the stern father figure he was sure they had once seen him as. “I assume you know what Mrs. Ulrich called to tell me today?” he said in his best “you’re in trouble” voice.

They looked at each other again, resigning themselves to their fate. “Yeah, Dad, we know,” Zander muttered.

“You want to tell me how long this has been going on?” Rick demanded.

There was a brief pause, before Paula answered, “Since after I was raped.”

That made a certain kind of sense, Rick realized. That would seem to track with about when their attitudes toward each other had started to change, going from the constant bickering to the much more affectionate demeanor they’d displayed lately. And ... oh shit, was that the reason Paula was able to recover from her trauma as well as she did?

“We’re not hurting anyone, Dad!” Bobbi piped up.

“That doesn’t matter!” Rick declared. “It’s still incest! It’s still ... it’s still wrong...” Even as he said the words, he felt his conviction faltering, as he remembered the way he’d accepted the justifications the Monteverdes had given for their lifestyle. He was supposed to tell them it was wrong, though, he knew that. And he was supposed to believe that ... he should...

“What’s so wrong about it?” Zander insisted, taking Paula’s hand. “Who are we harming by doing this?”

“It’s not healthy!” Rick said, grasping for whatever arguments he could find. “You should be ... with other people...”

“We were, in case Mrs. Ulrich didn’t explain that part,” Paula put in. “Heather and Lance were there too. They accept what we’re doing, why can’t you?”

Rick fell momentarily silent, not sure how to answer this. This wasn’t how a talking-to with his kids was supposed to go. He was supposed to be able to put down the law, to be the face of authority, and he made an effort to start acting like it. “We have standards in this house! Your mother and I expect a certain propriety in—”

Bobbi snorted a laugh.

“Is something funny, young lady?” Rick barked, glaring at her.

“Yeah, Dad, you’re being funny,” she nodded. “‘Propriety?’ That’s what you expect? With what you’ve been doing with that lady from your office?”

Rick felt the heat of blood rushing into his ears as his back went stiff. “What ... you ... how did...?”

“Raven,” Paula said by way of explanation. “She was there, remember? She tells us things.”

“And besides,” Zander added, “who are you to lecture us about incest? We know all about you and Lily!”

Now Rick actually staggered back a step as he stared at his kids in shock and dismay. The meek, resigned expressions they’d had mere minutes ago had given way to defiant, accusatory looks at him. He hadn’t wanted to believe it, but clearly the secret was out. His credibility as a good father was all but gone. Was there anyone left who didn’t know what he...?

Keiko. He had to believe that Keiko still didn’t know. He had to cling to that last shred of stability, or...

The front door opened behind him, and Rick turned to see Marcus entering the house. He started for the stairs, but stopped upon seeing everyone gathered in the family room and the tense mood surrounding them. “Hey, what’s going on here?” he asked.

Rick had no idea how to respond to this, nor did he feel like he could have even if he did. But Paula sighed and said, “Dad knows about us.”

“Oh. Damn,” Marcus said heavily, directing a cringe at Rick.

Rick blinked, realizing the implications of this brief exchange. “You know what your siblings have been doing?”

Marcus’s silence was answer enough.

Further realization started dawning on Rick as he looked back and forth between his older and younger offspring. “Are you ... are you involved in this too?” he demanded of his oldest.

For a moment, Marcus still didn’t reply. Then finally he said, “If you’re asking if I’ve had sex with Paula and Bobbi ... yeah, Dad, we’ve fucked. Guess we’re just that kind of family, huh?”

Rick stared unblinking at him, and then dropped his head into his hands and let out the loudest, most exasperated groan he had in him.

“Come on, Dad, what’s the matter?” Bobbi said in a tone that was halfway to teasing as she got up from the couch. She took on a mischievous grin and started approaching him with a sashaying walk that he was sure a father should not see his 16-year-old daughter make. “You feeling left out? You’ve only tried incest once, and it was way too long ago, wasn’t it?”

“Bobbi, what are you doing?” Zander asked, while Rick could only stare at her, frozen in place as he saw the look she was giving him.

“If you want,” Bobbi said in a smoky voice, drawing dangerously close to him, “you can be involved too.”

“B-Bobbi ... stop...” he stammered, taking another step back.
