“So that’s it for today. Remember to read chapter 34 by next week, and don’t forget that your reports are due on the 26th.” The sound of shuffling papers and people rising from their seats echoed throughout the lecture hall as the professor packed up his notes and made his exit.
Marcus sat back in his seat and stretched before getting up. Psychology was one of those subjects he’d held off on taking for as long as he could because it just never held his attention, but ultimately he needed the graduation credit. One of the things he’d enjoyed most about Spring Break, apart from getting to see Raven again, was not having to take this slog of a class and listen to Professor Ralston’s droning voice.
At least it was over for another week and he could get back to the more interesting subjects, if one could call them that. He packed up his books and notes, looking forward to having some time to kill before his next class. Maybe he’d find some of his buddies from econ class and while away some time on the basketball court. Or maybe he’d just grab a latte and kick back, enjoying some quiet time. Either option sounded good, as long as it didn’t involve a lot of heavy thinking.
“Hey Marcus,” a feminine voice said as he emerged from the door out of class. He looked up to see his cousin Mina standing there, waiting to greet him.
“Oh, Mina, hey,” he said. “What are you doing here?”
“Saying hi to you, what’s it look like?” she said in a teasing voice. “I got a free period right now, how about you?”
“If you know where my classes are, you know the answer to that, don’t you?” he teased back, slinging his bag over his shoulder and starting to walk in the other direction, his posture inviting her to follow.
“Of course I do,” she said. “I was just seeing if you wanted to spend that free period with your favorite cousin.”
He turned his head back to look at her, giving her a cockeyed smirk. “We talking about you now? Or did Ami show up for a visit?”
She snorted a laugh and playfully shoved him on the shoulder. “You’re a jerk, you know that?”
“I do know that. It’s a gift.”
They walked a few minutes in silence. He found a vending machine and dropped some coin for a bottled Frappuccino, and then kicked back on a bench, sitting in the most relaxed pose he could manage. Mina sat down sidelong on the bench next to him, resting a cheek on her fist as she regarded him.
“So,” she said, “second day back at school. You miss Raven yet?”
Marcus gave her a raised-eyebrow. “Just how whipped do you think I am?”
“Hey, I wouldn’t blame you,” she shrugged. “I already miss her too.”
“You only saw her one day last week!”
“I know, right! Just one day! You got the whole week with her, you bastard!” she said this last in the same teasing voice.
Marcus scoffed, and downed a gulp of his Frappuccino. “So what did you do when she came to visit you, anyway?”
Now Mina actually hesitated. “Oh ... not much. We hung around, we talked, we played ... some games...”
Marcus looked at her, getting the sense she was being coy about something. “Mina?”
“What?”
“Is there something you’re not telling me?”
“What makes you say that?”
“Cause you sound like you’re trying really hard not to say something.” Then he thought back, and remembered something else. “Come to think, Raven was kind of tight-lipped too when I asked her about visiting your place. She just said it was a ‘story for another day’ or something.”
Mina bit her lip and scanned her eyes about in thought. “Well ... that day isn’t here yet.”
Marcus sat up more fully, turning his upper body to look at her more fully. “Okay, now you’re really piquing my curiosity. What’s going on here?”
Mina was starting to look really uncomfortable now. “Uh ... well...” She looked at him, not saying anything for a few moments. Then she sighed, and said, “Look, all I can tell you right now is that our families, mine and Raven’s, we have some secrets. Some things we don’t want just anybody knowing about. I promise, we’ll tell you about them someday, just not right now.”
It wasn’t an answer he liked, but clearly she wasn’t going to budge. And it wasn’t like it was any of his business, really. It was just frustrating to know there was something that his girlfriend and cousin were both in on that they didn’t trust him with. He just had to take it on faith that they meant it when they said they’d tell him later. Whenever the hell that might be.
Marcus slumped back into the bench. “Fine, fine, keep your little secrets. I’m no snoop.”
“Thanks, handsome. Appreciate it.”
He took another languid sip as a moment of silence fell. The mood had gone from playful to awkward in the last few minutes.
“So, back to what I was saying before,” Mina said, her tone brightening.
“What, about if I already miss Raven after two days?”
Mina took on a sly look now. “Well I bet you at least miss having a regular source of pussy on hand, right?”
It wasn’t the first time Mina had made a crude sexual comment like that in front of him; in fact she was pretty bold about it a lot of the time. But it had yet to get any less weird hearing his cousin talk to him so openly about his sex life. “All right, fine, I’ll cop to that one at least. But it’s not like there aren’t plenty of other girls around here that I can get.”
“Oh yeah?” she challenged him. “And when was the last one you hooked up with?”
In truth, it had been a couple of months since the last casual encounter he’d had, and it sounded like Mina knew that. He didn’t know how she knew that...
Wait, of course he did. She knew because he’d told Raven, and Mina and Raven talked. He’d have to start being more careful about that. Or else sit Raven down for a serious talking-to.
“Okay, fine, it’s been a little while,” he admitted. “And you know what? I think I’m cool with that.”
“Really?” Mina said skeptically. “You’re cool with not getting laid?”
“I’m cool with not hooking up with random coeds that I’m not gonna see again. Been there, done that, doesn’t really excite me anymore.”
“Oh, I get it,” Mina said. “You need something more stable. Someone you can have a real connection with.”
“I have that, remember? She’s named Raven, maybe you’ve heard of her?”
“And she’s not here.”
Marcus looked at Mina more fully now. She was sitting a little closer to him now than she had been a moment ago. And now that he thought about it, her scoop-necked top was showing a pretty enticing amount of cleavage. Especially with the way she was leaning forward to look at him through half-lidded eyes.
If she weren’t his cousin, he’d almost think...
“What are you suggesting? That I find some regular girl on the side? Drag her along, and then cut her loose?”
“It wouldn’t be unheard of,” Mina said, in a voice that was starting to sound almost ... sultry? “Knowing Raven, she wouldn’t mind.”
He caught a motion of her hand out of the corner of his eye. He glanced down, and Mina paused with her hand in midair, before setting it back down on the back of the bench. From the way her hand had been moving, it had looked as if she’d been about to start stroking his arm before she thought better of it.
He was almost afraid to ask, but he still found the next words coming out of his mouth: “You got someone in mind?”
She didn’t answer right away. At least not verbally. Her eyes dipped down ... and then it looked like they were scanning along his body. Marcus had seen girls look him up and down this way before, usually after he’d been working out or playing sports, or if they were flirting at a party. It was the look of a girl who was checking him out. And his cousin was looking at him that way now.
“I might,” she said in a low purr.
A moment of silence passed.
“Mina?”
Her eyes came up to meet his directly. “Marcus?”
“Do you need a cold shower or something?”
She took on a look of perfect feigned innocence. “Why do you ask?”
Just a moment ago, Mina had been giving off the air of a horny girl who was undeniably looking to seduce someone. Now anyone who looked at her would have seen nothing more than a happy college girl quietly enjoying a pleasant midday break with her cousin. Marcus was starting to feel like he was in the Twilight Zone.
Marcus took a deep gulp of his Frappuccino and stood up from the bench. “You know what? I think I’m gonna spend my free period on the b-ball court. See if some of the guys are available.”
“Okay. Mind if I come cheer you on?”
“Guess I can’t stop you.”
“Wow,” Mina snarked, “way to make a girl feel wanted.” There wasn’t much venom in her tone, though, and she got up and started following him.
Marcus just needed to burn off some energy. The world would start making sense again after that, he was sure of it.
Zander was trying really hard not to look at Paula on the drive to school today. Any time he came to a stop or got into even a little bit of traffic, where his eyes could safely turn away from the road, they ended up drifting towards his sister in the seat beside him, and he kept fighting to stop looking at her. Because every time he did, all he could think about was the sight of her and Heather lezzing it out in her room. He kept picturing her body when she’d sat up and started grinding on Heather’s face ... he could still make out the exact shape of her naked breasts and the color of her nipples in his mind...
He was actually having to fight not to get an erection thinking about his sister. How fucked up was that?
And what was more, it seemed like she noticed, as she kept sneaking glances at him, too. “Uh, Zander? Are you like, okay and everything?”
“Wh-what? Yes, of course, I’m fine,” he said, shifting awkwardly in his seat again.
“You’re acting really weird over there. What’s going on?”
“Yeah, Zander,” Bobbi chimed in, leaning forward and peering around the seat at him. “What’s going on? Something on your mind?” She had a mischievous tone to her voice, and when he turned to glance at her, she raised her eyebrows at him conspiratorially.
She wasn’t being exactly subtle about it, either. “Okay, I feel like I’m missing something here,” Paula said.
“Nope, nothing,” Bobbi said, sitting back again.
“Nothing at all,” Zander agreed, pointedly turning his attention to the road ahead of him.
Paula regarded them both, and let out a frustrated sigh.
It was only after they’d gotten to school and parted ways that Paula started putting the beginnings of two-and-two together. She was sitting in her first class with Zander for the day, glancing at him across the room and noticing how deliberately he was not looking at her. She thought back to how he and Bobbi had been talking like they had some kind of secret that she’d been daring him to confess...
Like maybe they’d seen something. Bobbi, the damn little snoop who was always peeking in on people’s business, who just didn’t understand the concept of privacy...
... Who had been in the house when she and Heather had been together yesterday...
Oh, jeez, and if Zander had walked by and seen what Bobbi was looking at, just like Paula had walked by and seen Bobbi spying on Marcus and Raven last week...
Paula dropped her face onto her hands on the desk. This was just what she didn’t need. Yes, Zander had earned some serious brownie points by stepping in during that situation with Justin yesterday, but if he’d then gone and spied on her after that...
Well, if he did see her, he probably didn’t mean to, she figured. Unlike Bobbi. Knowing him, he would have just happened to walk by while Bobbi was being her usual snooping self and had gotten an eyeful, and had just been freaked out by it. He definitely looked more this morning like someone who was embarrassed about something than someone who’d been perving on her.
She really hoped that was what happened anyway. She wasn’t about to ask him.
Paula was still dwelling on the subject when she and Heather met up in the halls during first break. Heather had certainly noticed that Paula had something on her mind during class, but she wanted fewer prying ears around before she would dare actually speak aloud what was on her mind.
“So are you gonna tell me what’s up with you today?” Heather asked once they were safely away from the classroom.
Paula looked around them, checking for anyone who might be eavesdropping. “I think,” she said in a low voice, “ ... we need to start locking the door if we’re gonna...” She tilted her head forward and raised her eyebrows suggestively.
Heather seemed to take a few seconds to gather the implications, but when it came, she closed her eyes and let out a breath. “Bobbi was spying again?”
“I don’t know for sure, but I think so. And ... I think ... again, this is just my suspicion, but I think Zander might have seen us too.”
Now Heather’s eyes widened. She turned her gaze down the hall to where Zander was going through his locker. He swapped out a few books and closed it, and then started to turn, coming face to face with Paula and Heather both looking at him. Immediately he started turning red and whipped his gaze away, suddenly looking like he couldn’t get away from there fast enough. As soon as he was gone, Heather looked back to Paula, who gave her a “See what I mean?” kind of look.
“So ... is this gonna make things weird or something?” Heather said vaguely.
“That’s a pretty relative term now,” Paula groaned.
“I mean, do you wanna do something about it? Like, confront him or something?”
“Oh, hell no! Just ... it’s just ... ick!”
Heather apparently didn’t know what to say to this, as she only looked back again in the direction Zander had gone. When she finally did speak, what she said was, “I guess I’m just asking if this changes anything.”
“Well ... I don’t think so...” Paula said, sounding a whole world of uncertain. “I mean I don’t want it to, but ... well, if he did see us, then there’s no sense in pretending he didn’t ... unless I’m totally wrong about why he’s so weirded out, which ... I don’t think I am, but ... oh, fuck, I don’t even know what I’m saying!”
“What you’re saying about what?” a new voice cut in.
Paula and Heather both practically jumped at the sight of Lance Jeffries standing beside them. “Oh!” Paula gasped. “Lance, hi!”
“Hey, Paula,” he said. “Something up? You look like something’s bothering you.”
“Oh, it’s just ... uh...”
“Family trouble,” Heather supplied for her. “Issues with siblings, you know.”
“You talking about your brother? The one I hear rescued you from Justin yesterday?”
Paula coyly smiled at him. “You heard about that, huh?”
“Word gets around,” Lance shrugged. “Sounds to me like you’re lucky to have a brother like that.”
Paula blinked up at him, and glanced at Heather, who silently gave her a “He’s got a point” kind of shrug.
“Anyway, are you going to the party on Friday?” Lance went on.
“Party?” Paula and Heather both said in unison.
“You didn’t hear? Sheila’s throwing a party for the whole class Friday night. I was hoping you two could make it.”
“You were?” Heather said with a brilliant smile on her face. Paula was equally intrigued.
“Of course I am! The parties where you two show up are my favorites!” He punctuated this with a hand on each of their shoulders. Both girls blushed and shivered excitedly, and turned to look at each other with nervous giggles.
“Should I take that as a yes?” Lance asked.
“Oh, we’ll be there!” Paula nodded, grinning wide.
“For sure!” Heather added.
“All right then! Sounds like it’s gonna be fun! I’ll see you both later!”
“Not if we see you first!” Heather squeaked as he walked away, giving them both a suave wave.
As soon as he was out of sight, both girls turned to each other and practically collapsed against each other’s shoulders, giggling like loons. “Oh, this is gonna be perfect!” Paula said.
“Yeah!” Heather agreed. “I think this is the time to do it! We can finally make our move—”
“Wait a minute,” Paula suddenly said, pulling back, her look turning more serious. “Which one of us?”
“Huh?”
“The bet! Aren’t we supposed to be competing for him?”
Heather’s look paled. She hesitated, before admitting, “I ... I don’t think I want to compete with you for him...”
Paula was about to ask what she meant, but then she realized she knew exactly what she meant. “You know ... I don’t think I do either.”
Just as Paula was wondering how to proceed with this realization, Heather started to get a wicked look in her eye. “So ... maybe we shouldn’t compete at all.”
“What do you mean?”
Heather turned Paula around so that they were face-to-face, almost embracing. “What if ... what if we forget about the bet, and we both lose our virginities to him ... together?”
Paula’s eyes went wide, and she gaped open-mouthed at her BFF. “You mean...” she almost couldn’t get the next word out, at least not before checking once again to make sure no one was eavesdropping, and when she did get it out she said it in an urgent, forceful but barely audible whisper: “THREESOME?!?”
“You ... me ... and him!” Heather husked. “We’ve always shared everything, Paula, so why shouldn’t we share this?”
Paula didn’t know how long she was silent for. But she finally pulled Heather into an embrace that could choke the life from her. “I love it!” she squeaked. “It’s perfect!”
They had to resist the urge to kiss each other right there in the halls; Heather settled for a kiss on Paula’s cheek. “I think I’m already getting wet just thinking about it!” Heather said.
“Me too! I am so gonna maul you after school!”
Raven usually did her best to maintain a positive attitude, but every once in a while someone came along to make it more difficult. Her last customer at the salon today had been one of those snooty fashion queens who found fault with everything Raven did. “Not that short!” “I said I wanted the highlights to be this long!” “What are you, colorblind?” Raven was sorely tempted to teach this bitch why it was dangerous to insult the person holding the scissors whom you were trusting with your hair. But she managed.
Fortunately, when she clocked out and left the salon, there was someone waiting there who was able to cheer her right up. Stepping outside, she was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar white Nissan parked outside, with her brother seated patiently in the driver’s seat. The moment her eyes met his, she broke out in a smile and came scampering to hop into the passenger seat. “Hey!” she beamed. “What are you doing here?”
“Just in the neighborhood,” he shrugged. “Thought I’d save you the Uber fare.”
Raven grinned wide, and leaned in to give Terrance a loud, wet kiss on the cheek. “I love my brother.”
Terrance started the car up and pulled out onto the street. “So, you hear from Mom and Dad?” he asked.
“Uh-huh. They said they’ve met them. They’re taking them to the beach tomorrow. Gonna make their move.”
Terrance glanced at her curiously. “You know, I still don’t quite get why you want them to seduce Rick and his mistress together. If you’re trying to help heal this family, shouldn’t we be getting him to leave the woman he’s cheating on his wife with?”
