More operatives poured in through the smoke wearing black armor and armed to the teeth, as they surrounded Ace, Phillip, Phoebe, and their Pokémon in a tightening circle. The hum of charged weapons filled the air. Saur, Blaze, and Crush stepped forward, teeth bared, ready to fight to the last breath.

Ghetsis was still smiling, clearly enjoying the stunned and grim looks on their faces.

“Despite the damage you caused, I’d like to thank the three of you for coming aboard our ship,” he sneered. “It’s made your apprehension so much simpler.”

He turned slightly, gesturing toward the assembled villains, both in person and on the screens behind him.

“Now, gentlemen ... what shall we do with our guests?”

Archie laughed, rolling a toothpick between his teeth. “I say we have a little fun with ‘em. Douse ‘em in chum and drop ‘em into a Sharpedo pit. Let’s see how long the tough ones last.”

“As amusing as that would be...” Lysandre began on his screen, “I say we take their Pokémon companions and let these three watch as their partners are disposed of one by one. Afterwards, throw them in a cell where they can think about it and rot.”

“Just shoot them and be done with it,” Cyrus said flatly, his voice still lacking any emotion.

“They could have useful information,” Maxie chimed in on his screen. “Perhaps we hold them and utilize intense interrogation methods until they’ve outlived their usefulness...”

Giovanni didn’t speak right away. He stared intensely at Ace as if he wanted to say something to him and him alone. Something that never came.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion tore through the western wall. Metal screamed and operatives were launched across the room with their limbs flailing and guns spinning away. Smoke and fire flooded the deck.

“Move!” Ace instinctively yelled to Phillip and Phoebe.

They dove for cover as their Pokémon instinctively shielded them from flying debris.

Through the haze, a bright white flash cut through the smoke, and then came the sound of wings. A Togekiss burst through the hole in the hull, wings gleaming in the red light, firing Dazzling Gleam after Dazzling Gleam into the chaos below, and riding on top of it was...

“Mikaela!” Ace shouted.

“Sky, again!” she shouted from atop her Fairy Pokémon.

“Pwee-pwee-chooo!” Sky banked sharply, easily dodging oncoming gunfire as it fired another round of Dazzling Gleam and took out another squad of operatives.

“Vrrr-shREEEEEECH!” With a sudden shimmer in the air, a Dragapult materialized midair, letting out a piercing shriek before firing twin Dragon Darts. The explosive projectiles detonated across the bridge, hurling soldiers in every direction.

The ceiling gave way as two more massive shapes dove in through the smoke. There was a Gyarados, a Talonflame, and a Xatu, all with their trainers riding atop them.

On Gyarados’ back, drenched from the sea but alive and furious, was a woman Ace recognized as Chelsea Gomez. Then Amber Pennebaker gracefully rode her Talonflame, and Lucy Simon clung to her Xatu. The Calypso Island Gym Leaders had come to their rescue. Ace deduced that the Dragapult likely belonged to Angelina Rohan.

“Maria Bella sends her regards!” Chelsea bellowed.

“Shryee-aaah!” After dropping off Amber behind cover, Talonflame strafed the bridge, sending jets of fire streaking across the metal floor, while Xatu used its Psychic power to block bullets and bring grunts to their knees, screaming in pain and clutching their heads.

From behind the smoke, a Gengar materialized, hurling Shadow Balls into a group of armed guards. Then Mary Mortima walked through the smoke behind Gengar, smirking and unbothered by the chaos in one of the most badass entrances Ace had ever seen.

The Dragapult swooped alongside Mikaela’s Togekiss, the two Pokémon carving through Plasma’s soldiers like thunder and lightning. A Honchkrow and a Metagross swooped through the shattered hull next, carrying the rest of the Calypso Gym Leaders in a blazing formation.

They were all here. The best of Calypso.

“Styx, Draco Meteor!” Angelina Rohan shouted to her Dragapult, her voice cutting through the din. The spectral dragon soared high, gathering cosmic energy before unleashing a rain of burning meteors that tore through Plasma’s forces like artillery.

“Shady, use Dark Pulse!” Malinda Olivares yelled.

“Haa-krowww!” Her Honchkrow banked hard and released a pulse of dark energy that seared through a squad of operatives.

For the first time since boarding the ship, Ace allowed himself a small, fierce smile.

Phillip looked at him, grinning despite the chaos. “Guess the cavalry’s here.”

Phoebe cracked her knuckles. “About damn time.”

“Let’s make it count,” Ace said in a low, steady voice filled with pride.

He turned toward the command dais, his fists clenching—but the heavy hitters of the syndicate were already moving.

Through the parting smoke, Ace saw Giovanni, Cyrus, and Ghetsis standing before the heavy blast doors of the emergency transport corridor. A vanguard of heavily armored Plasma operatives and a pair of snarling Bisharp had formed an impenetrable wall of steel and shields to cover their retreat.

Ghetsis didn’t look panicked. He didn’t even look angry. As the screens connecting Maxie and Lysandre flickered and died, Ghetsis merely brushed a stray piece of ash from his heavy robes. He looked out over the burning bridge, taking in the devastation and the roaring Gym Leaders.

His gaze flicked to Ace, his smile returning, cold and entirely satisfied.

“We have what we came for,” Ghetsis’s voice echoed through the command deck’s surviving PA system, calm and terrifyingly composed. “The world has seen our power. Gentlemen, we leave.”

Cyrus turned without a word, disappearing into the red-lit corridor. Giovanni gave Ace one final, indecipherable look before stepping into the shadows behind him. Ghetsis stepped backward, and the heavy hydraulic doors began to slide shut.

“No!” Ace snarled, taking a hard step forward. His blood was screaming at him to charge. They were right there. The men responsible for tearing the region apart. If he could just get Blaze or Saur past that vanguard, if he could just slip through those doors before they locked—

“Xavier, Protect! Cover Ace and the others!” Gianna Mercury’s voice rang out from above.

“Bzzzz-shreeeech!” Her Metagross slammed its arms into the deck right in front of Ace, a shimmering blue barrier spreading outward like a rippling dome. Bullets and blasts from the retreating vanguard deflected harmlessly off it, but it also cut Ace off.

Ace slammed his fist against the inside of the energy dome. Through the translucent blue light, he watched the transport doors hiss and lock shut. The villains were gone.

For a split second, Ace weighed the cost of ordering Xavier to drop the shield. He could blast through the doors. He could chase them down the lower hangar.

But then the floor violently buckled beneath them, throwing Phillip against the bulkhead. Secondary explosions rippled through the walls, and the screech of tearing metal drowned out the gunfire.

Phoebe grabbed his shoulder, ripping his attention away from the locked doors. “Ace, let them go! Look around—this place is going to self-destruct any minute!”

Ace looked at the burning room. At the Gym Leaders risking their lives, at the wounded operatives groaning on the floor, and at his friends whose breathing was already ragged. The choice tasted like ash in his mouth, but the burning need for pursuit died against the cold reality of the room.

He forced his shoulders to drop, turning his back on the escape route.

“That control device...” Phillip shouted over the noise, stumbling upright. “That thing has gotta have some kind of reactor or something heavy powering it.”

Phoebe nodded frantically, squeezing Ace’s arm. “He’s right. Something strong enough to control Lugia would need a ton of energy. If this place blows, it could go nuclear. We have to shut that device down before it takes half the coastline with it.”

Ace unclenched his jaw, the rage hardening into absolute clarity. He had made the choice to stay; now he had to make it count.

“Okay. Then that’s what we do,” Ace ordered, his voice cutting through the panic. “We’ll signal Mikaela to back us up. The other Gym Leaders need to grab as many wounded as they can and get the hell off this ship. We’re going for the reactor.”

Phillip and Phoebe nodded in agreement.

They carefully but quickly made their way over to where most of the gym leaders were huddled, with Xavier’s protection keeping him safe from gunfire.

“Who’s running the evacuation in Maria Bella?” Ace asked as soon as he reached them.

“Chief Inspector Jenny and the international police force arrived a little while ago, and they took over,” Mikaela said. “I gathered everyone, and we were trying to figure out where you were when we saw the ship.”

“Well, we owe you all one,” Ace said.

“You’re even more reckless than I thought, Ace,” Angelina said with a sly smile. “I’d guess it’s safe to say this isn’t your first rodeo.”

Ace flashed a quick smile to her before his eyebrows narrowed. “Gianna, Angelina, Amber, we’re fairly certain that Ghetsis rigged this place to blow. You all need to evacuate the injured and any civilians on board.” He turned to Mikaela. “Mikaela, we need you with us. We’re going to find that control device and make sure it’s taken offline.”

“Why does that matter if this place is gonna blow anyway?” Amber asked.

“Because to power a weapon like that control device, you need a very powerful energy source,” Phoebe explained. “And if we don’t shut that energy source down before this ship explodes, it could potentially go nuclear, taking all of Maria Bella with it.”

Their faces darkened, and they all straightened up understanding the urgency of the situation.

“Angie, what do you think?” Gianna asked, turning to her.

They all turned to look at her as if waiting for her approval, the de facto leader of the Calypso Island gym leaders. Angelina then turned to Mikaela.

“Mikaela, you stay and help with the evacuation of this ship,” she said sternly. “You and the others get everyone out. I’m going with these three to shut down that reactor.”

“But Angie–”

“You stay,” Angelina said more sharply. “This is not up for discussion. As soon as you all get everyone out, get clear. You understand me?”

Mikaela looked at Ace.

Ace gave her a reassuring soft smile and a nod. He understood why Angelina was making this decision. What he, Phoebe, and Phillip were about to do was incredibly dangerous. They didn’t even know how long they had before this place blew. There was a very real chance they wouldn’t make it out alive. Angelina knew that, which was why she was going and making Mikaela stay.

Mikaela finally nodded. “Okay, we’ll get everyone clear.”

“Let’s move then. Now.” Angelina said.

Red emergency lights pulsed like a heartbeat through the corridor as sirens wailed overhead. The deck pitched violently with metal groaning as explosions rippled from somewhere deep within the ship’s hull.

Ace, Angelina, Phillip, and Phoebe sprinted through the narrow passage, their Pokémon clearing a path ahead. Saur’s vines ripped through collapsed beams, Blaze melted sealed doors, and Crush doused fires with bursts of pressurized water.

Another blast rocked the corridor, flinging Ace against the bulkhead. Sparks showered down as he steadied himself, coughing through the smoke.

Angelina helped him up. “You alright?”

“I’m fine,” Ace said automatically, although his side was a bit sore. “Come on! Control room’s ahead!”

Styx weaved above the group, projecting shimmering barriers of Reflect and Protect to deflect falling debris.

“You realize we’re inside a flying bomb right now, right?!” Phillip yelled.

“Then let’s make sure it doesn’t reach the city!” Angelina responded.

They burst through the final door into the main control core. It was a circular chamber filled with consoles, glowing red displays, and a massive central pillar of humming machinery. Electricity arced wildly across the ceiling, and one of the side panels was blown open with wires sparking violently.

Phoebe ran to the console, her eyes scanning the data. “The reactor’s destabilizing! The control signal Ghetsis was using ... it’s feeding back into the core!”

Ace was already working on the other terminal. “Can we shut it down?”

Phoebe’s brow furrowed. “Not from the controls. This station is fried. We’ll have to find another way to shut it down.”

Phillip’s gaze flicked toward the massive control tower in the center of the room, its glow pulsing in rhythm with the flickering light of Lugia outside through the window. “Then we do it manually.”

He stepped toward it.

“Whoa, hold up!” Ace grabbed his arm. “That thing’s throwing off enough voltage to cook you alive!”

Phillip pulled free. “We don’t have time. If this ship detonates with this thing still running, millions will die.”

Phoebe’s voice cracked, panic slipping through. “Phillip—”

Phillip tossed her a half-smile over his shoulder. “Trust me.”

He sprinted toward the control core, the floor trembling beneath him. Energy pulsed around the column in violent waves, like a heartbeat gone mad. Phillip reached the base, jammed open the emergency access panel, and began ripping out cords and bypass wires with his bare hands.

Sparks exploded across his forearms, burning through his jacket. Alarms shrieked louder. Phillip yelled in pain but he didn’t stop.

Angelina shouted from the console. “Core integrity collapsing! Thirty seconds before critical!”

Ace turned toward Phoebe. “We have to pull him out!”

Phoebe’s jaw tightened. “No. We hold this line until he’s done. Blaze! protect him!”

Blaze planted itself between Phillip and the collapsing ceiling, wings flaring wide as it unleashed a wall of fire, vaporizing falling debris before it could crush him.

Phillip roared with pain and determination as he wrenched free the final conduit, shoving his hand against the manual override switch. The column’s blinding light flared one last time ... then flickered and died.

The sudden silence was deafening. For a heartbeat, no one moved. Then Angelina looked at her readout, voice trembling. “ ... He did it. The control feed’s offline.”

Phillip stood frozen for a fraction of a second, his breath hitching in his throat. Then, his knees buckled.
