Lucy raised her arm smoothly. “Armarouge, return,” she said, her tone commanding but elegant.
The crimson beam pulled her fallen knight back. Without hesitation she plucked another ball from her belt, her grin sharp as glass.
“Vesper! Let’s slay this dragon!”
The elegant Pokémon materialized in a swirl of light, her gown-like form flowing as she took her stance. There were faint scorch marks from her earlier fight, but her poise and piercing eyes betrayed no weakness.
Wallace’s voice was calm, analytical over the commentary. “This could be dangerous for Ace. Gardevoir’s Fairy typing means Moonblast would be devastating. Quadruple effective against Hydreigon.”
Dan leaned forward, voice booming. “One clean shot and Ace’s dark dragon won’t stand a chance!”
“Begin!” the ref called, dropping his arms.
Across the field, Ace’s jaw tightened. “Ghidorah, Dark Pulse!”
Lucy’s finger flicked upward. “Moonblast!”
Vesper raised her hands, energy drawing into a swirling orb of radiant pink light. The stadium held her breath as the Fairy-type power began to swell.
Hydreigon, however, was already in motion. All three heads reared back, dark rings of purple-and-black energy forming in their jaws.
“Fire!” Ace snapped.
GYYYOORRR-RWGH!” The triple beam of writhing darkness lanced across the field in a storm of energy, faster than Vesper could release her Moonblast. The attack crashed into her chest with a thunderous impact.
BOOOOM!
The shockwave rattled the stadium. The Gardevoir let out a piercing cry as her body was hurled backward, her Moonblast fizzling into nothing. She struck the ground hard, her elegant form sprawled across the stone floor.
A hush fell over the crowd before erupting in a tidal wave of cheers.
The referee’s left hand shot into the air. “Gardevoir is unable to battle! Hydreigon wins!”
“GYYYRRR-OOOOO-RAAAAARWGH!” Ghidorah roared in triumph.
Lucy’s lips pursed for just a moment, the first crack in her polished veneer. Then, almost instantly, she forced her grin back into place as she returned Vesper to her ball.
“Speed saved you there, Ace,” she said evenly, though her eyes glittered with calculation. “But this has turned into cleanup duty now.”
Ace exhaled through his nose, lowering his arm.
Lucy’s fingers brushed across her belt until they landed on a Quick Ball. She plucked it free, her voice taking on a sharper edge than before.
“I’m sorry, Ace, but this ends here.”
The ball enlarged in her hand, gleaming under the stadium lights. Ace said nothing. He only stared across the battlefield, bracing himself for whatever she was about to unleash.
With a flick of her wrist, Lucy hurled the Quick Ball forward. “Aragorn!” Lucy called.
A flash of light burst open, and a Gallade, the elegant, blade-armed warrior emerged in a poised stance. “Schwiii-ZINNG!” His crimson horns gleamed, and his arm-blades extended with a metallic hiss as he slid one foot back into a duelist’s crouch.
The crowd erupted in a wave of excitement, chants rippling through the gym like thunder.
“Aragorn! A Pokémon that embodied Lucy’s style!” Wallace chimed enthusiastically. “Graceful, intelligent, deadly precise! This is her sweeper.”
Dan leaned forward talking animatedly. “Gallade is well-known to be one of the most technically dangerous Pokémon in Calypso! With his combination of Psychic and Fighting-type moves, his coverage is insane. This could be a checkmate-level strategy!”
Across the field, Ace’s eyes narrowed. “Dark Pulse, Ghidorah!”
“GYYYRRR!” Ghidorah’s three heads snarled in unison, charging orbs of black-and-purple energy before unleashing them in a spiraling blast.
“Aragorn! Swords Dance!” Lucy countered.
“SCHWIII-ZINNG!” Aragorn spun on his heel, arms flashing like blades as his body glowed with a sharp aura. The Dark Pulse struck, slamming into his chest with a deafening BOOM!. Smoke and sparks exploded outward as the crowd gasped.
When the dust cleared, Aragorn was still on his feet. His body pulsed with a deep red glow and his eyes flashed menacingly at Ghidorah.
Wallace leaned forward in his chair. “That’s the Justified ability!”
Dan jumped in, his voice rising with the crowd. “Lucy baited Ace right into it! Dark moves trigger Gallade’s ability, and combined with Swords Dance, his Attack has skyrocketed to terrifying levels!”
Lucy’s smile was razor-sharp.
Shit. Nice going, Ace. No more Dark-type moves then, Ace thought, frustrated. “Ghidorah, Dragon Pulse!”
The three-headed dragon roared, charging bluish-white energy in each maw before hurling a focused beam across the battlefield.
Lucy’s hand cut the air like a conductor’s baton. “Agility!”
“ZIIING!” The Gallade blurred in motion, his form flickering side to side before vanishing in a psychic flash. The Dragon Pulse lanced through empty air, smashing harmlessly into the stadium wall. The crowd erupted in wild disbelief as Aragorn reappeared, sprinting toward Hydreigon with blistering speed.
“Sacred Sword!” Lucy’s command rang like a blade’s edge.
Aragorn’s arm lit with holy energy, forming a blade of radiant light that extended past his elbow. With a single bounding step, he closed the distance, his blade raised high.
The crowd was on its feet, voices roaring like a storm as Gallade leapt toward Ghidorah, ready to carve through the dark dragon’s defenses.
Ace’s eyes narrowed. “Ghidorah, DRACO METEOR!”
“KRRR-VREEE-ONGH!” The three-headed dragon snarled, forcing his battered body to channel the last reserves of his power. Energy swirled above, gathering into a blazing sphere of orange-and-gold fire, then crashing downward in a cataclysmic explosion just as Aragorn’s Sacred Sword struck home.
BOOOOOOM!
The impact was apocalyptic. Sacred Sword sliced into Ghidorah’s chest with radiant force at the exact moment the meteor detonated point-blank, engulfing Gallade in a wave of draconic destruction. The shockwave blasted across the stadium, rattling the protective barriers and drawing screams from the crowd. Smoke and fire engulfed the battlefield.
For several long seconds, nothing could be seen.
When the haze cleared, both Pokémon lay crumpled in the rubble. Ghidorah’s wings twitched once before going limp. Gallade’s blade-arm flickered out, his body collapsing forward. Neither rose again.
The referee raised both arms high, his voice booming over the stunned silence. “Hydreigon and Gallade are both unable to battle! Double Knockout!”
The crowd erupted into chaos, cheers, gasps, cries of disbelief echoing through the arena.
“Unbelievable! Both fighters fall at the same moment!” Dan shouted into his mic. “That’s the sheer level of power and risk in the Divine Challenge!”
“That was no accident. Ace sacrificed Ghidorah to stop Gallade from snowballing with his boosted attack,” Wallace explained. “If that Sacred Sword had connected clean without resistance, Aragorn would have likely cut through Ace’s last Pokémon easily. Ace chose to trade everything for the reset. Bold ... and dangerous.”
Across the field, Lucy recalled Gallade slowly. Her lips pressed into a thin line, clearly displeased with the results of that exchange. “That was a fluke, Ace,” she murmured. “A desperate gamble that happened to pay off for you.”
Ace cracked a smile for the first time in a while. She might’ve still been in the lead with Ace down to his last Pokémon, but she was uncomfortable now.
That makes her vulnerable, Ace thought.
Back in Cianwood City, Phillip sat at the edge of his seat, his hands repeatedly clenching and unclenching. “Ace, I swear I’ll never forgive you if you lose this match and die on us,” he muttered.
Back at the match, Ace returned Ghidorah with a fire burning in his chest. He felt confident in his last partner.
The scoreboard flashed. Ace had one Pokémon left, while Lucy Simon had two: Armarouge and her final unknown ace. But Ace had a feeling about what Pokémon it would be.
The crowd was on the edge of their seats all wondering what Pokémon Ace saved for the finale.
“It’s gotta be Saur after coming in so clutch in the last match!”
“Saur! Saur! We want Saur!”
“Na, no way! Saur is part Poison type. He’d get eaten alive here.”
Meanwhile on the field, Lucy readied her ball and tossed. “Murphy!”
“FWUOO-PFFF-SHH!” Her Armarouge landed and flexed his arms ready once again for battle.
Ace took out the Pokéball of his last available partner. He looked at it and whispered to it. “It’s time.”
He then tossed the Poké Ball without even calling a name. The ball opened and everyone in the arena leaned forward to get a better look.
Out forth came a large orange dragon with two S-shaped antennae on his head. The crowd roared in excitement.
“GROOO-WAAAOORGH!”
Dan lurched forward, eyes wide. “Dragonite! Ace’s final Pokémon is a Dragonite! What a powerhouse for the finale!”
The crowd’s roar swelled to a deafening pitch as the orange dragon’s wings unfurled, sending gusts of wind rippling through the stadium. Draco’s gentle eyes scanned the field for a moment, then narrowed with resolve as he let out a thunderous roar that rattled the rafters.
Wallace leaned toward his mic. “This is no ordinary pick. Dragonite represents sheer resilience, versatility, and raw power. Ace chose his final partner well.”
“But let’s not forget, Lucy still has another Pokémon after Armarouge! Dan reminded those tuning into the broadcast. “Dragonite may be mighty, but Ace has no margin for error.”
Lucy’s smile returned. “Cute choice, Ace,” she said in a sly but sharp voice. “Let’s see if your dragon can keep his wings intact in my domain.”
Ace adjusted his jacket. “We’re here to win, Lucy.”
Draco beat his wings, sending sparks of static through the air, the force of his presence cutting through the noise.
“Begin!” the ref called.
“Draco, use Dragon Dance.” Ace said calmly.
“BARK-OOOOOOO-OOOH!” Draco’s body became surrounded by orange energy as he spun around several times increasing his speed and attack power.
“Murphy, Armor Cannon!” Lucy ordered. “Make him pay!”
“ZHOOOO-SHT!” The cannons came together again glowing white-hot before charging a blast of fire energy. Murphy then fired it at Draco who was still spinning. The attack made a direct hit on the Dragonite, exploding on impact.
When the smoke cleared everyone gasped to see Draco standing there seemingly having shrugged off the attack.
“Multiscale,” Wallace said calmly.
“Pardon?” Dan asked, looking over at Wallace.
“It’s Dragonite’s Multiscale ability, Dan. When he’s at full health, any attack that hits Dragonite has his damage cut in half. Plus, if you add the fact that Dragon-types resist Fire attacks naturally then it’s no wonder Dragonite could tank a hit like that.” Wallace straightened up, his gaze toward the battlefield intense. “Ace knew this, which is why he had Draco use Dragon Dance. He knew it would tank a hit, and now his attack power and speed have increased.”
“Let’s see if Murphy is ready for this souped-up Dragon,” Dan said, turning back to the field.
“I doubt it,” Wallace muttered.
Lucy looked uneasy. “Murphy, Expanding Force!”
Ace smiled. “Dragon Claw.”
“BAR-OOOH!” Draco’s claws ignited with draconic light, as he rocketed towards Armarouge with incredible speed. Draco slashed across the fire warrior’s yellow plated chest before he could even launch his attack.
“FWUOO-ZHOOOO-SHT!” Armarouge screamed in agony as he was sent flying backwards crumpling in a heap on the ground.
“Murphy!” Lucy cried, sounding concerned as opposed to her usually calm and controlled demeanor.
Murphy struggled to his feet, one arm clutching his chest, and his breath very ragged.
“No! He’s not getting off that easily! Murphy, Destiny Bond!” Lucy yelled.
“PHH-SHT!” Murphy’s eyes glowed purple and a small shadow appeared underneath him.
The crowd gasped.
“She used Destiny Bond!” Wallace exclaimed. “If Draco’s next attack makes Murphy faint, then Draco will automatically faint along with him, which would give Lucy the win!”
“And judging by the state of things, Murphy won’t survive another attack!” Dan added leaning closer. “What will Ace do?”
“Dragon Dance again!” Ace yelled.
“GROOO!” Draco spun around, and his body glowed again indicating another attack and speed increase.
“Ace didn’t attack this time, but he’ll have to figure out something...” Wallace said.
“Destiny Bond again!” Lucy ordered.
“She’s stalling!” someone from the crowd yelled.
“It looks like Lucy will keep this up as long as possible until Ace attacks!” Dan yelled.
