Mikaela pulled out her next Poké Ball. “Come on out, Mera, darling!”

“Aaa-haa-chaaa!”

A stunning Primarina appeared, flipping her shimmering fins elegantly. Primarina arched her back and sang, her voice rippling across the arena like a haunting aria.

The sound alone seemed to hush the crowd for a heartbeat before they erupted again, flashes from cameras strobing against the battlefield.

Dan sat back down and leaned forward. “Ohhhh, this could get interesting! Mikaela is bringing out one of her toughest Pokémon, Primarina!”

“Bisharp has momentum right now, but this matchup? It’s volatile,” Wallace chimed. “Primarina can dismantle Dark and Steel types with the right coverage.”

Ace looked at his Bisharp. “Sharpsburg, you good?”

Sharpsburg turned around and gave Ace a nod while adding a low Krrt!.

Ace exhaled once. “Okay, eyes forward,” he said to his Pokémon. “No distractions.”

The Bisharp grunted again, lowering into a stance with his blades glinting under the stadium lights. The crimson aura of his Defiant boost still faintly pulsed around his body, making the air between him and Primarina shimmer with tension.

“Darling, let’s make him drown in regret. Mera, Sparkling Aria!” Mikaela ordered.

The crowd surged with anticipation as Primarina lifted her head and began to sing, water spiraling from her mouth into a shimmering orb that swelled with devastating power. The crowd roared as the Primarina’s voice filled the arena, her Sparkling Aria swelling into a brilliant sphere of water.

Ace cut in immediately. “Sharpsburg, Night Slash! Cut her down!”

Sharpsburg lunged forward, blades glowing pitch black, slicing across the incoming attack. For a moment it looked like the Bisharp might cleave through, but the aria burst midair with a blinding detonation. The blast drenched Sharpsburg in a torrent of water, staggering him back several steps.

Dan’s face lit up. “Oh, Mera’s opening attack connects, but Sharpsburg took it and is somehow still standing!”

Wallace leaned in. “That resolve is keeping Sharpsburg upright, but make no mistake, Mera’s power is relentless.”

Ace gritted his teeth. “Swords Dance!”

Sharpsburg crossed his blades, a crimson aura flaring outward as his power rose even higher. The crowd gasped at the sight of his offense climbing to terrifying levels.

Mikaela just smiled. “I’m not giving you time to breathe. Mera, Focus Blast!”

The Primarina’s fins shimmered, drawing in energy until a pulsing orb of fighting-type force swelled between her fore fins. With a melodic cry, she launched it straight at Sharpsburg.

Sharpsburg darted aside with surprising agility, the Focus Blast whizzing past and detonating against the far wall with a thunderous boom.

“Iron Head!” Ace barked.

In that instant, the Bisharp closed the distance, his steel dome glowing bright before he rammed headlong into Primarina’s chest.

BAM! “Haa-chaaa!”

Mera cried out as she was driven backward, sliding across the wet floor. The crowd went wild.

“Incredible hit! Ace’s Bisharp just nearly split Mikaela’s Primarina in half!” Dan exclaimed.

“That’s the danger with Defiant and Swords Dance! Sharpsburg’s attack power is sky-high right now,” Wallace added. “Mikaela has to stabilize this quickly!”

Mikaela’s lips curled into a wicked grin. “Finally, something worth my time, but let me remind you, sweetheart.” Her voice dipped low, sounding sultry and sharp. “Queens don’t fall easily. Mera, Moonblast!”

The Primarina’s high and pure voice rose as a sphere of radiant fairy energy blossomed before her mouth. The glow intensified until it burst forward in a blinding beam, slamming directly into Sharpsburg before he could pull back.

The crowd gasped as Bisharp was engulfed in the explosion of light.

When the smoke cleared, Sharpsburg was still standing, but barely. His armor was cracked, sparks flickering along his body. He staggered forward, gritting through sheer will.

Ace’s eyes hardened. “Finish this. Night Slash, now!”

Bisharp let out a guttural roar and charged, his blade glowing pitch black again, slicing across Mera’s side in one last desperate strike. The blow connected, and the crowd exploded in shock, but Mera held on. She recoiled, battered, but her fins glowed as she prepared her counter.

Mikaela’s smile sharpened into a predator’s grin. “End it, darling. Dazzling Gleam!”

“Ma-Reee!”

Primarina unleashed a blinding burst of rainbow light that swallowed the battlefield. When it faded, Sharpsburg lay crumpled on the ground, unmoving.

The referee raised his right arm. “Bisharp is unable to battle! Primarina wins!”

The stadium erupted in cheers, banners waving, voices chanting Mikaela’s name.

Dan shouted over the roar. “Primarina holds on and takes down Bisharp after an absolute slugfest!”

Wallace nodded gravely. “Ace pushed hard. Bisharp hit like a monster, but Mikaela weathered the storm, stayed composed, and turned the battle her way. That’s why she hasn’t lost in three years.”

Across the field, Mikaela gave a little bow, her pink nails flashing under the lights. “Not bad, Ace, but you’re still a long way from breaking me.”

Ace silently recalled Sharpsburg, his expression calm but tight. He rolled the ball in his hand once, then slid it back to his belt. “Good fight,” he murmured.

Ace took a minute to calm his nerves. Another one of his Pokémon down, which meant he was that much closer to death. But he couldn’t think about that. If he focused more on the penalty for losing instead of the battle itself, he wouldn’t stand a chance of winning.

Ace took a deep breath and steeled himself.

I will win. I have to.

Ace pulled a ball from his belt, his expression sharpening. “It’s go time, Saur!”

With a flash of light, his Venusaur materialized on the battlefield, his massive flower flaring as the air itself seemed to thicken with the earthy scent of pollen.

“GWARRR-OHHH!” Saur roared, announcing himself to the crowd.

“Oh, and here comes the ace in his corner! No pun intended! If I’m not mistaken, that’s the partner that started it all for him! “Dan exclaimed.

“Venusaur has tremendous staying power, but Mikaela’s Primarina is still fresh,” Wallace chimed in. “Ace is going to have to dig deep here.”

Mikaela tilted her head. “So, this is your most trusted partner? Cute. Let’s see how he handles a diva.” She snapped her fingers. “Mera, Moonblast!”

“Aaa-ha-cha!” Mera’s voice soared, building a glowing orb of fairy energy before blasting it across the field.

The explosion rocked Saur back, petals shaking violently.

Ace’s voice cut through the noise. “Saur, Giga Drain! Now!”

“GWARRR!” Saur’s flower flared, tendrils of green energy lashing out and wrapping around Mera. Mera’s energy was siphoned away, and Saur’s body glowed faintly as he absorbed the energy back into himself. The marks from the earlier Moonblast healed instantly.

Dan gripped the table hard. “What a response! Ace is keeping himself in this fight!”

Wallace leaned forward, hands still folded. “Smart play. If Saur can keep draining like that, he can outlast Mera.”

Mikaela’s nails tapped against her armrest, her lips curling into a grin. “Mera, Ice Beam!”

“Oh shit...” Ace muttered.

Mera opened her mouth and fired a freezing beam across the arena. It struck Saur’s left flank, frost crawling up his vines and petals.

“Brrr-ahhh!” Saur bellowed in pain. He staggered but stayed upright, steam rising as he forced his weight forward.

Ace narrowed his eyes. “Not today! Saur, Sludge Bomb!”

The flower erupted on Saur’s back, spewing a glob of toxic sludge that sailed across the field and struck Mera head-on. The blast burst in a noxious spray, coating her in poison.

“Ma—REEEEE!”

Mikaela’s smirk faltered as Primarina cried out, her body quivering under the venom. The poison sank in quickly as her movements lost their fluid grace. The crowd erupted.

“He poisoned her!”

“Venusaur’s turning it around!”

Wallace nodded firmly. “That was huge. Poison is practically a death sentence against a graceful battler like Primarina. She can’t dance around forever with venom eating at her.”

“Fuck you, Ace.” Mikaela muttered under her breath. She snapped her fingers sharply. “Mera, Sparkling Aria! Now!”

Primarina unleashed a final, desperate song, a dome of water bursting outward and slamming into Saur with explosive force. The arena shook, water spraying into the invisible crowd energy shields near the front rows.

When the mist cleared, both Pokémon were still standing, but barely. Saur’s chest heaved with his petals drooping, while Primarina swayed unsteadily, poison coursing through her veins.

Ace clenched a fist. “Finish her, Saur! Giga Drain!”

Saur gathered the last of his strength. With a roar, his flower flared once again and tendrils of green energy lashing out and wrapping around Primarina zapping the last of her strength and fueling Saur.

“Aaa-chaaa!” Mera let out a final cry before collapsing onto the soaked arena floor, eyes shut.

Saur perked up a bit with the added energy.

The referee raised his flag. “Primarina is unable to battle! Venusaur wins!”

The stadium erupted, fans on their feet, voices thundering.

“Saur pulls it off! Ace takes down Mera!” Dan exclaimed.

Wallace observed the field closely. “But look at Saur. He’s in rough shape. That victory came at a huge cost.”

On the field, Saur stood tall, but his petals sagged a little and frost still clung to his side. He exhaled raggedly. His eyes were fierce, but his body was battered.

Ace gave a sharp nod. “Good work, man. She’s not breaking us.”

The camera zoomed in on Mikaela. She looked more serious than before now. It was clear that she hadn’t been challenged like this in a long time.

She flipped her hair back, exhaling before pulling out her next Poké Ball. “Sylvester, it’s your turn!”

The crowd was already a frenzy of noise, but when Sylvester the Sylveon stepped gracefully onto the field, ribbons swaying with eerie calm, the volume swelled.

“Pii-vey!”

“Saur, return!” Ace yelled as a red beam emitted from the Poké Ball, enveloping the Venusaur before pulling him back into the ball. “Rest for a minute, I’ll likely need you again.”

Dan once again leaned forward. “Mikaela’s Sylveon! The fan favorite is here!”

Wallace sat calmly taking in the new arrival. “And Ace is wise to recall his Venusaur. Sylveon would’ve carved through him after that war with Primarina.”

Ace calmly swapped his Poké Ball, voice low but firm. “Tails, I need you!”

“Naaa-reee!” In a burst of bright light, Ace’s Ninetales padded onto the field, nine golden tails fanning out as her eyes gleamed with fire.

Immediately, the stadium lights seemed to dim against the sudden flare of sunlight. Tails’ Drought ability had activated, bathing the battlefield in searing heat.

“Ohhh, Mommy, look! A Ninetales, my favorite Pokémon!” A young girl yelled excitedly.

“That sunlight’s gonna boost every Fire-type move Ninetales has!” someone else from the crowd said.

50547-26-ch-26-04-ninetales.jpg

Mikaela’s smirk didn’t falter, though her fingers tightened on her arm. “Sylvester, Light Screen!”

The Fairy-type’s ribbons shimmered, erecting a protective barrier that glittered across the field.

Ace didn’t hesitate. “Tails, Flamethrower!”

The fox inhaled, then exhaled a roaring stream of flame. The sunlight amplified it making the blaze roar brighter and more intense than usual. The fire smashed into Sylvester’s barrier. The screen held, but the impact forced Sylveon back, paws skidding across the stage.

“What a hit! Even through Light Screen, that sun-boosted Flamethrower’s packing serious heat!” Dan shouted into his microphone.

Wallace mused before adding his two cents. “But Mikaela planned ahead. Light Screen’s cutting that damage. The question is can Sylvester hit back before Tails overwhelms him?”

Mikaela snapped her fingers. “Hyper Voice!”

“Pii-VEEEEY!” Sylvester shrieked, a piercing cry amplified by ribbons of fairy energy. The soundwave hammered Ninetales, forcing her to crouch low with a sharp yelp.

Ace gritted his teeth. “Stay up! Now Solar Beam!”

“Kyeiii!” Tails’ eyes flared as sunlight condensed instantly into a glowing orb at her mouth. With no charge time needed in Drought, she fired like a cannon, blasting Sylvester square in the chest. The stadium detonated with cheers as Sylveon staggered violently, the barrier barely dampening the blow.

Mikaela’s nails dug into her armrest. “Damn it...”

Ace’s voice cut like steel. “Finish him! Flamethrower again!”

The second wave of sun-empowered fire roared forth, engulfing Sylvester. When the smoke cleared, the Fairy Pokémon lay unconscious, his ribbons limp on the floor.

The referee raised his left arm. “Sylveon is unable to battle! Ninetales wins!”

The stadium erupted, the noise shaking the very walls.

Dan stood up, unable to contain his excitement. “No way! Ace just took down Sylveon! Mikaela Faye is down to her last Pokémon!”

“This ... this is unprecedented,” Wallace said with his eyes wide. “She hasn’t been pushed this far in three years, and now the Divine Challenger has her on the ropes.”

The Calypso gym leader group text thread was going off.

Chelsea: “Yoooo! Mikaela’s down to her last Pokémon?? Been a minute since that’s happened.

Lucy: “Maybe she’s just having an off day?

Malinda: “Or maybe Angie was right about this Ace dude...

Gianna: “Yall, c’mon. Mikaela saved her best for last. Ace is about to see a monster. We’ve seen Mikaela sweep whole teams with her. She’s about to end him.

The camera zoomed in on Mikaela again. She raised a hand to her temple, breathing slowly, visibly processing the weight of being backed into a corner. The crowd, smelling blood, was going wild.

“Oh, my Arceus, he’s gonna do it!”
