The morning sun spilled across Maria Bella’s Mystical Gym, its marble façade glinting in the light. The building was designed like something out of a dream. Arched windows were framed in soft pink stone, fairy statues danced across the entrance, and a wide set of stairs led up to the main hall.
Ace paused at the sign above the glass doors and muttered under his breath, “Mystical Gym...” A crooked smirk tugged at his lips. “Of course it is.”
Inside, the air smelled faintly of flowers and polished wood. A receptionist in a lilac blazer glanced up as Ace approached.
“Hi,” he said evenly. “I’m here to formally challenge Mikaela Faye.”
“Name?” she asked politely, pen poised.
“Ace Tomlinson,” he said simply.
The pen froze mid-stroke. The receptionist blinked, then looked up, really seeing him now. “You’re ... you’re the Divine Challenger.”
“That’s me,” Ace said with a casual shrug.
For a moment, she just stared. Then she scrambled to her terminal, typing quickly, her fingers shaking slightly. When she looked up again, her eyes were wide. “Your Divine Challenge appointment has been scheduled. Mikaela Faye will face you this Thursday. Two days from now.”
“Good,” Ace replied. “Tell her I’ll be ready.”
He turned on his heel, slipping his hands into his jacket pockets as he pushed through the gym’s double doors back out into the warm street ... and nearly walked straight into her.
Mikaela Faye herself.
She stood framed by the sunlight, a sleek black coat draped over her shoulders, her long dark brown hair spilling in waves down her back. The rich caramel and golden highlights caught the light like embers, and her bright blue eyes locked instantly on his. For a second, the noise of the street dimmed.
Ace stopped short, raising a brow. “Mikaela Faye.”
Her lips curved into a slow smile, full and confident, like she was already in control of the moment. “Ace Tomlinson,” she said, her voice smooth, sultry but edged with iron. “So, it’s true. You’re actually here.”
Ace smirked faintly. “Guess my request went through faster than I thought.”
She let her eyes wander over him. They were calm, assessing, like she was already studying him as an opponent. “I don’t know whether to admire you ... or call you insane. Nobody’s touched the Divine Challenge in fifty years. And you picked me first?”
“Your gym was closest,” Ace deadpanned.
Mikaela laughed softly, the sound low and knowing. “Practical. I like that.” Her smile sharpened with her gaze never wavering. “But don’t mistake proximity for weakness. Fairy types have ended more overconfident careers than I can count.”
Ace tilted his head, unbothered. “Then we’ll see if mine’s next on the list.”
For a beat, neither moved. Just two trainers, locked in the quiet electric charge of knowing what was coming.
Mikaela broke it first, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “Thursday, then. Don’t be late, Ace Tomlinson. I’m not known for my patience.”
“Neither am I,” he replied.
She stepped past him, the faint scent of her perfume trailing in the air. Ace watched her go, the corner of his mouth curving into a faint grin.
First blood, he thought. Let’s see what you’ve got, Mikaela Faye.
The streets of Maria Bella woke restless the next morning. At first, it was whispers, a couple of trainers at a café or a shopkeeper leaning across a counter to gossip with a customer.
By midday, however, the whispers had turned into a roar that rolled through the city like surf against the shore. A Divine Challenger after fifty years.
On PokéNet, Calypso’s busiest online battle forum, a thread lit up like wildfire.
GreninjaGawd27 (11:03 AM):
“Lmaooooo this guy really thinks he can win the Divine Challenge. Mikaela hasn’t lost in 3 YEARS. He’s gonna get styled on 💀”
FairyQueen89 (11:05 AM):
“Ace Tomlinson is a beast, but this is MIKAELA FAYE we’re talking about. Her Fairy teams are BUILT DIFFERENT. Dude is DEAD.”
Youngster_Joey (11:07 AM):
“Y’all are sleeping on Ace. Dude has won multiple region championships. I’m not saying he’s gonna win but ... I wouldn’t be so quick to count him out.”
CooltrainerNick (11:10 AM):
“Mikaela’s whole strategy is about playing with her opponents to lull them into a false sense of security. If Ace gets too confident, it’s over before it begins.”
By noon, the thread had swelled to thousands of comments, the name Ace Tomlinson trending across the island.
In bars across the capital, televisions flickered with the same headline:
DIVINE CHALLENGE RETURNS: ACE TOMLINSON APPROVED
At the Grand Hotel’s lobby bar, a crowd of tourists and trainers clustered around a screen as a news anchor introduced the segment.
“ ... For the first time in half a century, a trainer has been approved to attempt the Divine Challenge. His name: Ace Tomlinson, a decorated champion from Kanto with championships in Kanto & Johto, Unova, and Paldea...”
Professor Raul Morales, a stern-faced battle analyst, adjusted his glasses in the studio feed.
“Professor, what are the odds he pulls this off?” the anchor asked.
Morales sighed, his expression grim. “Statistically? Less than one percent. Mikaela Faye is undefeated in three years, and that’s only one gym leader. Ace would have to beat all eight without a single loss. That said...” He paused, leaning forward. “If anyone could defy those odds, it would be a man like him, but if he fails, tradition will not show mercy. He will be executed.”
The bar went still at those words.
Ace stepped out of his hotel lobby, planning to get some fresh air before his final day of preparation. The moment he exited the front doors, however, he was swarmed.
Reporters, cameramen, battle analysts, and even some excited trainers flooded the hotel’s entrance, blocking his path and peppering him with questions.
“Ace! Ace! Do you truly believe you can defeat Mikaela Faye?!”
“She hasn’t lost in three years! What makes you think you’ll be the one to end that streak?!”
“Do you feel the pressure of the Divine Challenge? You do realize what’s at stake if you lose, right?”
“Ace, if you lose tomorrow, you’ll be executed by island law. Do you accept dying on foreign soil for this challenge?”
Microphones were shoved in his face. Cameras were flashing. Everyone was talking over each other, trying to get a reaction. Ace remained still for a moment.
Then, with his signature calm demeanor, he took a step forward, forcing the cameras and microphones to adjust. The crowd went dead silent, waiting for his response.
Ace finally spoke, looking directly at one of the cameras. “I guarantee that I will win tomorrow.”
Gasps. There were a few stunned murmurs before chaos ensued.
“You’re making a guarantee?!”
“Are you prepared to back that up?”
“Mikaela Faye is going to hear about this! You know that right?!”
Ace didn’t say another word. Instead, he pushed through the crowd, his focus unshaken, and disappeared into the city streets.
The internet exploded as Ace’s guarantee went viral. Within minutes, the clip spread across PokéNet, social media hubs, and every major Pokémon battle discussion hub. The Trending Hashtags quickly materialized all over social media.
#AceVsMikaela (Trending #1 in Maria Bella)
#AceGuaranteesVictory (Trending #2 worldwide)
#DivineChallenge
On PokéNet, reactions flooded in.
MariaBellaQueen91 (1:02 PM)
“LMAOOO HE REALLY GUARANTEED A WIN AGAINST MIKAELA FAYE?! RIP BOZO.”
TheRealestOne (1:04 PM)
“I RESPECT THE CONFIDENCE. BUT DAMN, THAT’S A BIG STATEMENT.”
SuckMyUltraBa11s (1:05 PM)
“This man has BALLS. But Mikaela Faye is about to make him eat those words.”
SuperNerdEric (1:08 PM)
“Does he NOT realize Mikaela specializes in ruining overconfident men? This is gonna be brutal.”
Talk shows and podcasts were all over this story. The Calypso Battle Analysis Show (Live on TV) weighed in.
The anchor kicked off the topic. “Ace Tomlinson has made a bold guarantee that he will defeat Mikaela Faye tomorrow. Professor Morales, does this change your prediction?”
Prof. Morales sighed, rubbing his temples. “Oh, dear Arceus ... If anything, this makes Mikaela even MORE dangerous. She thrives off proving challengers wrong. If Ace was already fighting an uphill battle before, he just made it steeper.”
The anchor smiles amusingly. “So, in simple terms, you’re saying this was a mistake?”
Prof. Morales looked at her intensely. “A MASSIVE one.”
At Mikaela’s Luxury Villa that afternoon, Mikaela was lounging by the pool, sipping a cocktail, when her assistant ran up to her, showing her the trending clip on a tablet.
Mikaela watched the clip, listening to Ace’s guarantee. She lowered her sunglasses, her expression amused.
She then let out a soft chuckle. “He’s got guts.”
